Flyingfish,

So what is going on with the logs not being produced after a reboot scan? IS the virus doing that?

Probably.

Finding the rootkits was a good thing (if you can call a rootkit a good thing). I don't know why none of the Rootkit scanner could find it.

Let's get a scan on a couple versions of a file.

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

c:\windows\system32\drivers\tcpip.sys <===this file

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

Also please check this one: c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\tcpip.sys

Flyingfish,

You did good. I was really only interested in the second one if something was found in the first one. It was clean so we don't care about the other one.

Combofix has been updated to a newer version. I'd like you to drag your copy to your recycle bin. Then please re-download and run just like you did originally. Because that was so far back, here are directions again (You probably won't receive any questions about recovery console because you've already installed it):

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Hey TomK,

One other annoyance I found is that I cannot drag and drop desktop items in the recycling bin. I can delete them, just can't drag and drop. The program will drop into the spot the bin was, and the bin moves to the side. Fun fun fun.

Here's the log:

ComboFix 09-06-08.03 - Dan 06/08/2009 22:09.9 - NTFSx86

Flyingfish,

That looks better but there is obviously something still hiding that I'm not seeing.

Let's try this:

Please download RootRepeal to your desktop
  • Physically disconnect your machine from the internet as your system will be unprotected.
  • Unzip it to it's own folder, close all other programs especially your security programs (anti-spyware, anti-virus, and firewall) and run RootRepeal.exe
  • Click the Report tab at the bottom and then the Scan button.
  • A box will pop up, check the boxes beside Drivers, Files, Processes SSDT and click OK.
  • Another box will open, check the boxes beside all the drives, eg : C:\, then click OK.
  • The scan will take a little while to run, so let it go unhindered.
  • Once it is done, click the Save Report button, call it RepealScan and save the log to your desktop.
  • Reconnect to the internet.
  • Post the log here in your reply.
Heya TomK, So I ran the report with all the options by mistake. I am not sure, I think it found something. :woot: I think the IPVNMon.sys file came up before as something bad. I was also curious, I couldn't remember if this was addressed but just about every time combofix ran it always said that a file was trying to attach itself to combofix, C\programfiles\commonfiles\logishrd\LVMVFM\LVPrclnj.dll What is that file? If it is bad, was it removed? Also, why does CF always say it couldn't access personal settings b/c access is denied? Is that suppose to happen? Thanks for your help again! Flyingfish,

IPVNMon.sys is Visual IP InSight software. It usually comes from your ISP. Shouldn't be the cause of your problems.

LVPrclnj.dll is for your webcam.

Let's get a different look at the beast.

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
Note:These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.

Thanks TomK for the explanation of those processes. I was reaaaalllllllllllllllllly close. So far we've got nothing then? Why is this one so hard to find? Is it common they are this difficult? ~~Flyingfish
Flyingfish,

So far we've got nothing then? Why is this one so hard to find? Is it common they are this difficult?

Luckily they are not usually this hard. If they were, I'd have had to find a new hobby long ago. :pullhair:

A few things showing but I don't think they are going to resolve your issues.

Your Java is out of date and you have other old versions still on your computer, those old versions are now a security vulnerability:

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer - Version 6 update 14

Double click on OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
  • Do Not copy the word CODE
  • please note the fix starts with the :
:Processes
explorer.exe

[emptytemp]
[start explorer]
[Reboot]

Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered
  • Please save the resulting log to be posted in your next reply.
  • Reboot your computer
Please post the OTL2 log and a new HJT log.

Then let's try a tool we haven't thrown at it yet.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key repeatedly;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual user account.
  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
  • A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here. We also need you to post a new HijackThis log
Hi, I thought I'd post the first set of logs and then run the last scan. I think I ran this next on once with Indi. I encountered a problem when trying to load the new version of JAVA. I was able to uninstall it, although there was an error at the end and the program closed. I then tried to rerun the uninstaller and it said it was already uninstalled. So i went to Dl the new version and everything set up okay but then for the DL it would connect, start to DL, then stop/disconnect, and repeat. I tried it several times but it won't DL the program. IE cannot DL programs anymore since the virus, but I was using FF.

LOgs.

I don't know if this matters but when I was in safe mode I went into the Admin'd profile by mistake and the start menu and task bar were opperating correctly. While still in safe mode I switched to my profile to view the directions and my start menu and task bar was not working. Why would this be so?

SD Fix Log. SD Fix did not run again upon restart, the log didn't auto populate either, so I launched it and used F/enter and it finished running and produced this log;

THANKS!
Flyingfish,

I've come to the conclusion that I've reached the end of my usefulness.

I suggest that you post in the Windows Forum and see if the Tech Team can help. When you post there, please provide a link back to this thread so that they can see what all we've done here.

Meanwhile, Log looks good :D

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

  • Double click on OTL to run it.
  • Click on CleanUp!
  • When done, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Thanks for all your help TomK. I followed the clean up processes, and posted on the windows forum. Hopefully, they can help clear up the windows-esk issues. Thanks again.
