Hello, Thanks for your help!!!
This one started small but grew into something nasty.
The problem started with my background changing to a funkie weird coloured background. Then it changed to a background saying my system was compromised and I needed to purchase anti-spyware. Then my browser would go to the site and I'd get about 100 little pop-ups.
In task manager I found 4 processes that shouldn't be there. One was "Qx" and kept replicating itself a few times when i killed one process, so there'd be Q1 - Q9. After a bit I was able to kill all of them.
I ran spybot, after a short time it found a few things and said i should deleted them and reboot (was not finished with full scan). I rebooted and task manager was blank with no data at all, AVG could not update or run. Did a full scan with spybot, found several things, removed all. Ran AVG, found three trojan,rn viruses and deleted them. Ran regCure, found several things, fixed them.
Rebooted. System seemed fine except I couldn't change my background to anything, taskbar was locked, start menu favs was wipped out, show hidden files option cannot be changed. When I would change these options and save, the wait icon would flash wildly for about 10 seconds, after I click okay, it was like i never made the changes.

Tried above steps in safe mode, same result.
Tried above steps after disabling system restore and in safe mode, same results. (Now system will not let me turn system restore mode back on. (That really stinks)
Every time I run a new system scan Spybot usually picks up something, and AVG finds same three trojan.rN entries and deletes them.
Also tried downloading fixes from "http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/", script would run, but no change.
Forums first steps.

Pre-log work for XP
1. Show hidden files
Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."

~Originally, I had system set to "show hidden files". After virus it flipped to hide files.
~Followed above steps, system always reverts to previous setting of hidding system files.
2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
~Already had it from another problem about 2-3 years ago.
~Ran program for main and Firefox, emptied files.
3. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
~downloaded. Gave registry install error.
'Error creating registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
RegCreateKeyEx failed; code 5.
Access is denied.
Tried the 'retry' option a few times, gives error each time. Had option to ignore and proceeded with install, proceeded.
Update would not run, said cannot find server. Internet is active.
Without update Current database info:
Date 4/6/09,
Database version 1945,
Fingerprints loaded 72068.
Clicked, 'perform quick scan', receive error, 'There were no items to scan. Please check the settings tab to make proper adjustments.
Went to settings tab, no options selected. Selected options, but there's no save button, just exit and purchase. Tried full scan, same result. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling, same result.
WOW, the Trojan prevented the correct install of the anti-malware program.
