Kaspersky log
New HJT log taken after the above scan has run
HI. After the last step the comp is still the same. Really slow, internet moves like a tired snail. All the other problems listed previously are still present except now system restore is enabled again. I ran ATF cleaner. Last time I tried to run Malwarebytes it failed to install properly. SInce you wanted me to scan with it now, I uninstalled the other program, and tried to reinstall a new copy. I got the same error when trying to install. "Error creating registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware RegCreateKey Ex failed; code 5 Access is denied. Click Retry to try again, Ignore to proceed anyway, or Abort to cancel installation." So if i click retry it doesn't work, tried abort and reinstall, same result, clicked ignore. So now program won't work, can't update and cannot run a scan, The tools or options tab never has anything selected and it cannot be updated. I didn't run the other scan yet b/c I wanted to see if you wanted me try something to fix it. IT seems pretty crazy, the virus or whatever it is prevents this program from installing properly. Thanks
Hey Indi, I thought I'd try the 'help' section for MBAM, and while it was loading I opened MBAM and tried to run a scan. It said it couldn't connect to the internet to find updates (internet was on) but I tried to run a scan and it worked. So that's cool. I'll post logs back when it is done and the other scan as well.
Hi Indi,

I am curious what the impact on MBAM the registry install error would have, if any. Does that mean MBAM will not work properly?

The two scans didn't pick up anything. Completely clear. So I was wondering if the bug has been killed a while ago but something in the virus delete process deleted something in the registry which is causing these issues. :pullhair:

My AVG virus scaner is not picking anything up anymore. However, the registry file cleaner, 'registry cure' picks up issues in the empty registry values every time, and they are the same issues each time. But the program does not create a log which is frustrating. Soem of the entries are related to a 'media audio controller' which I thought was related to the original virus.

Thanks for your time!

Flyingfish,

Sorry for the delay. Indi is tied up with some real life issues. Let's see if I can help get you going.

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
    • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
      R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F2AA9440-6328-4933-B7C9-A6CCDF9CBF6D} - (no file)
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk.disabled
  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

We need to repair some of windows' internal registration settings
  • Please download Dial-A-Fix from one of the following mirrors:
  • Extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Double click Dial-a-Fix.exe to start the program.
  • Press the green double checkmark box (Looks like this: [external image: Posted Image])
  • UNcheck "Empty Temp Folders", as well as "Adjust Time/Date" in the prep section.
  • Press the GO button in the bottom of the window.
  • Exit/Close Dial-A-Fix

Please download SmitfraudFix

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
Hi Tomk,

Thanks for your help, tell Indi I hope all is well with him.

Okay- I was curious it seems with most of these programs they have a few lines where they try to access settings and it says access denied. Is that normal? The Smitfraud app did that this time.

I ran HJT and deleted the above marked items you listed. Since this Trojan or whatever it is, has a habit of changing things back the way they were, i ran the scan again and these three amigos were back.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

I tried to 'fix' them again, and they came back yet again.

I thought this below value might be the same as the ones above so I tried to fix it too. Same result, it always comes back.
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\toolbar,linksFolderName=

Are these default registry values that always come back?

Dial-A-Fix had an issue with C\windows\system32\initpki.dll It listed a 'error 5, access is denied' and told me to email a log to dial-a-fix@DjLizard. Here's the log in case you want it;

Notes about this log:
1) "->" denotes an external command being executed, and "-> (number)" indicates
the return code from the previous command
2) Not all external command return codes are accurate, or useful
3) Sometimes commands return 0 (no error) even when they fail or crash
4) If an error occurs while registering an object, please send an email to:
[removed] and include a copy of this log

What's the next step friend?
Flyingfish,

Those entries are kind of like defaults, they don't really hurt anything, just take up space (pretty minor space) they should have went away on an XP machine. Would have been different if Vista.

Let's get a deeper rootkit scan.

Please download gmer.zip from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

  • Right click on gmer.zip and select Extract All….
  • Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard.
  • Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK.
  • Click Next. It will start extracting.
  • Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish.
  • Double click on gmer.exe to run it.
  • Select the Rootkit tab.
  • On the right hand side, check all the items to be scanned, but leave Show All box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard.
  • Open Notepad or a similar text editor.
  • Paste the clipboard contents into the text editor.
  • Save the Gmer scan log and post it in your next reply.

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.
Tomk,

Here's the gmer scan log.

That did not transfer well at all from notes. I guess you'll just copy/paste in notes to read it better.

How do you track down and eliminate the hidden processes the scan found?

Thanks.

AVENGER

  • Download The Avenger by Swandog46 from here.
  • Unzip/extract it to a folder on your desktop.
  • Double click on avenger.exe to run The Avenger.
  • Click OK.
  • Make sure that both the box next to Scan for rootkits and the box next to Automatically disable any rootkits found both have ticks in them.
  • Click the Execute button.
  • You will be asked No script has been entered. Do you want to execute a rootkit scan only?.
  • Click Yes.
  • You will now be asked First step completed — The Avenger has been successfully set up to run on next boot. Reboot now?.
  • Click Yes.
  • Your PC will now be rebooted.
  • Note: If The Avenger finds a hidden rootkit driver, then The Avenger will require two reboots to complete its operation.
  • If that is the case, it will force a BSOD on the first reboot. This is normal & expected behaviour.
  • After your PC has completed the necessary reboots, a log should automatically open. If it does not automatically open, then the log can be found at %systemdrive%\avenger.txt (typically C:\avenger.txt).
  • Please post this log, along with a new HijackThis log in your next reply.
Hi TomK,

After all these steps I am starting to think the Trojan is winning / has won. Is my comp fixable? I am trying to hold on to hope that it can be.

I ran avenger but I do not know if it ran correctly (or user error). I did these steps;

[*]Download The Avenger by Swandog46 from here.

[*]Unzip/extract it to a folder on your desktop.

[*]Double click on avenger.exe to run The Avenger.

[*]Click OK.

[*]Make sure that both the box next to Scan for rootkits and the box next to Automatically disable any rootkits found both have ticks in them.

[*]Click the Execute button.

[*]You will be asked No script has been entered. Do you want to execute a rootkit scan only?.

[*]Click Yes.

[*]You will now be asked First step completed — The Avenger has been successfully set up to run on next boot. Reboot now?.

[*]Click Yes.

[*]Your PC will now be rebooted.

When the comp rebooted I clicked on my profile, windows started, and that 'new hardware found' windows pops up every time i reboot, even though there is no new hardware.

It didn't look like anything ran, i expected some type of window to launch, i waited a couple mins and then closed the 'new hardware' window and found the avenger's log on the C drive. It did not ask to reboot. Log said there was no problems.

When I was in the C drive folder I noted a few new program icons. I scanned one with MBAM and it came back as malware. I closed MBAM and scanned all three and it said there were two malware strings, so i deleted them. It asked to reboot, i did, looked at C drive, two of the three program icons were still there.

One shared the same name as the one that was deleted, cleanup.exe, so i deleted it, and the other just named .zip'.

For giggles I looked at the avenger log again and it had more data in it saying it was looking for cleanup.exe to delete but couldn't find it.

Why did it avenger not reboot a second time by itself or say there were problems and ask for a reboot before MBAM found them, cleaned them, and asked for a reboot?

Well, here are all the logs.

Here's the MBAM log, this is the first where i just did the scan, I must not have saved the log when I fixed the problems, but it's the same bug.

Flyingfish,

The thing is, I'm having a bit of trouble finding the trojan.

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    c:\cleanup.exe
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
HI TomK, At first cobmoFix would not run since it said I had the program for too long. I deleted it, and downloaded a new copy. I ran the program by dragging in the script file. It killed 3 files, one was c\win\sys32\tmp.reg. It rebooted and a log did not populate. So I went to where it said it would be C\ComboFix\log. I went to C, then there is a icon named ComboFix that looks the same as the 'my computer' icon. I click it and it opens back to the main 'my computer' folder. So that's a nice loop. I look in the other folder where logs have been stored called, 'Qoobox'. There's nothing new, I click on ALL files and folders and there's no new log for today's scan. This is frustrating, this happened the other time i ran CF with a script and then rebooted. The logs vanish. I did not find any 'cleanup.exe' files. When CF started to load it said a file was trying to attach itself to CF. It was C\ProgramFiles\Common Files\Logishrd\LVMVFM\LVPrclnj.dll I guess I could rerun it w/o the script and post that log but i don't think that will help much. Frustrated~ what shud we do next? Does it seem like I should reformat? I don't want to do that, but I can. (well wife doesn't want to b/c of her vast itunes library, but that can be transferred to another external drive and coppied back, right?) Thanks
Hi TomK

:pullhair:
I decided to run a regular comboFix scan and post the log to see if that helps. It does have the section at the start where it lists the previous run's deletions. I bolded one entry b/c I was curious if it was part of the problem since it has to do with the favorites menu. ANother thing I thought I should mention is IE is almost worthless, I can't download any programs and now it won't load the WTT website. I use FireFox for everything b/c it works fine.

Thanks~

Hey TomK,

I noticed my AVG scanner picked up a few new things I had not seen before. I feel like my computer is the local 2 dollar hooker on the corner, she picks up everything.

It said they were rootkits, deleted them, and needed a restart to kill them. The next day it picked them up again. The were;
c\windows\sys32\drivers\skynet\jsprhhid.sys
" chufykqk.dll
" tesssrwee.dll
" lfvwedm.dax

After the second time it tried to kill them the third scan still picked them up so I decided to run conbofix to see what it would do with them. Combo picked them up right away, and said it neeeded to reboot to kill them. I rebooted and started combo again. It looked like it was goning to do a full scan this time so I went and did other things. When I came back it was in the process of rebooting the comp again. For whatever reason it never produces a log when it reboots. So i tried running it again and it started to create a log from the last scan. It said;

Preparing log report
C\Combofic\create.cmd
The Batch file cannot be found

Then it closed. So ran it again tring to get it to produce the log file. INstead it did a full scan, did not reboot, and produced this log.
