Hi

Trying to clear a Packard Bell laptop of a dose of the nasties.

Spybot SD, AVG Free 8.5, AdAware AE free and MalwareBytes Anti Malware cleared out a load of stuff but I'm left with IE7 that redirects the click-through on lots of Google Search results to a range of sites.

Google searches OK on a search term and produces a reasonable list of results but if I click on a result, I see the status bar at the bottom of the IE7 window flash with a reference to www.clickcheck.ru, plus a long string and I am redirected to what is often an alternative search page.

I can't detect any more stuff, so rather than stuff about I'll see what you folk can come up with.

Many thanks in advance.

Heres the HJT log:

Are the redirects with all browsers or just IE?

Open hijackthis, do a system scan only and checkmark these lines, if present

Next
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please post back with
  • OTLISTI2 log
  • combofix log
  • new HJT log taken after all other steps

Thanks
Hi and thanks for the help.

To answer your question about browsers affected; there's only IE7 on this machine, so I can't comment about whether other browsers have their search redirected. I'll educate the owner about Firefox at a later date.

Performed all steps exactly as directed

Ran Hijack this scan after all other steps. Here's the output:

I've re-enabled AVG and AdAware but I won't do anything else till the all-clear sounds.

Thanks for your help thus far

John
Hi John K,

Good job. How is the search working now?

A bit more to do. We will use combofix again, but run it differently.

Please follow all previous instructions regarding security programs.

Open a new Notepad session
  • Click the Start button, click run
  • in the run box type notepad
  • click ok
  • In the notepad, Click "Format" and be certain that Word Wrap is not checked.
  • Copy and paste all the text in the code box below into the Notepad. Do Not copy the word CODE
Do Not copy the word CODE

File::
c:\windows\system32\rkskt.sys

Driver::
rkskt
b9c98070-2bf1-42d3-a335-2f93a78106ae

In the notepad
  • Click File, Save as…, and set the Save in to your Desktop
  • In the filename box, type (including quotation marks) as the filename: "CFScript.txt"
  • Click save
Using your mouse left button, drag the new file CFscript.txt and drop it on the ComboFix.exe icon as shown below.

This will start ComboFix again.Close all browser/windows first.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

You have some old vulnerable versions of java on your computer. You may want to copy and paste the instructions for this tool into a notepad and save to your desktop for reference as your browser should be closed.

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder. Close your browser.
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
The current version is Java™ 6 Update 13

Please post back with
  • combofix log
  • new HJT log
Hi again

Ran Combofix with the new script, followed by the Java update/clearout utility.

Clicking through on previously "sensitive" search results now apears to work OK - for instance "service Pack 3" and trying to click thru to the Microsoft dwnload info, plus "AVG free" and clicking thru to Grisoft's pages.

Here's the ComboFix log:

Hopefully that's nailed the blighter!

Thanks

Hi John K,

Yes hopefully. One more scan just to be sure.

You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions.
  • You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computerr under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt)
  • Set the Save In to Desktop
  • click the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
Let us know of any problems.

Thanks
Hi. This is getting a regular evening activity! Beats TV soap operas any day.

Ran Kapersky and took another Hijack This scan.

Kapersky gave quite a list of reports but I think they're all but one either already quarantined or in restore files.

Here's Kapersky output:

Thanks for the really quick replies - that helps a lot.

John
Hi John K,

Well it looks like you will be going back to watching the other screen. Just that one file to remove and clean up.

Run this fix, post back and if there are no other problems, we will clean up our tools

Next, Double click on OTList2.exe
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
  • Do Not copy the word CODE
  • please note the fix starts with the :
:OTLI
PRC - C:\Windows\Explorer.EXE (Microsoft Corporation)

:Services

:Reg

:Files
C:\Documents and Settings\chris\My Documents\My Received Files\PerfomanceOptimizerPre_Installer.exe

:Commands
[emptytemp]
[start explorer]
[Reboot]

Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered
  • Please save the resulting log to be posted in your next reply.

Thanks
OK, here's the OTList log after running the last ComboFIx script. Browsing seems clean, although the slightly uncharacteristic dropdown is still present as you fill in the Google search field box, at least the results seem to go where you'd expect. Hi John K,

re: dropdown box

You can change that by clicking Preferences (beside the search field), scroll down to Query Suggestions and check Do not provide query suggestions in the search box. Click Save Preferences

We'll clean up the tools. The quarantined files/logs as well as the old restore points will be removed during the steps below.

From your desktop, please delete
  • any notepads/logs that we created

Click the Start button, click Run. Copy and paste the following line into the run box and click OK
Combofix /u

Open OTListIt2 then click the Clean Up button. You may get prompted by your firewall that OTListIt wants to contact the internet - allow this. A cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will do some clean up tasks and delete some of the tools you have downloaded plus itself.

I suggest you keep MBAM. Keep MBAM updated and use it regularly.

Some Recommendations and prevention tips

Basic security consists of 1 antivirus program, 1 resident antispyware program, 1 on demand antispyware program and a firewall. You are missing a firewall.

* If you are behind a router Windows firewall should be fine. Otherwise a 3rd party firewall with outbound monitoring is recommended.

Click FIREWALL for tips, reviews and links to good, free and paid for firewalls. (Note: Zone Alarm is becoming bloatware)

You should also use Spyware Blaster to help immunize your computer.

settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

- Ensure that Automatic Update is turned on so you get all the latest patches.
Click start, control panel, click Security Center.

Take care :adios:
Hi once again.

Well cleaned up and tidied the carp** away.

Everything seems OK now, but I'll make sure my son's chum lets me know ASAP if anything unusual happens in the next day or so.

Windows has just downloaded and installed SP3 successfully, so auto updates is working OK.

I did get one alert from AVG whilst SP3 was installing, from something in a restore folder:

Trojan horse PSW.Agent.AADE C:System Volume Information\_restore{B1538C0-CBA3-4434-A006-53A338B37653}\RP3\A0000735.dll

It got cleared to the Vault and I've scanned a couple of times since with no result. Turned off system restore once again to clear the restore points and then re-enabled it.

I'll let Kapersky and malwarebytes loose once again and leave it there if nothing is found.

I'll point the lad at basic PC security and I've turned your last advice paragraphs into an htm file for him to keep on his machine and read at leisure and refer to again if he wants.

Thanks for all your help and the impressively quick replies.

Now, go and get some sun
Hi John K, Thanks for the reply and you are more than welome. It's difficult to say what the alert was, but you seemed to have a handle on it. I'll leave this thread open for a couple of days. Take care, it's been a pleasure working with you.
