IE7 unwanted Redirects using all search engines

17 min read

This thread's last reply is from . Advice, software, and links below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

Problem: When using all search engines, ie. Ask, Yahoo, Google, I get redirected to unwanted sites that have nothing to do with the returned search link I select. The only way I can select the site returned is to copy and paste it in the address bar.

I performed the following prior to running HijackThis

Under My Computer, Tools menu, Folder Options, View tab.
I Cleared "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, selected "Show hidden files and folders."
Cleared "Hide protected operating system files."
and Clicked Apply, and then clicked OK.

Below is my most recent HijackThis log. Please advise!

Hi bskkj4821. Welcome to TomCoyote! I need to take some time to look over your Hijack This log to come up with a fix. Please remember that I am an undergraduate which means I need to have my posts to you checked by a teacher or moderator to make sure I'm giving you the proper instructions. This process won't take long and I thank you for your patience. I'll be back with you soon.

Will do!

OK I'm back. Sorry for the delay. You have a Wareout infection that is redirecting your searches but before we attack that infection I would like to scan for rootkits. Please follow the instructions below:

Download and Run Gmer
Download Gmer to your Desktop and unzip it to your Desktop.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?…b2a25536a70b307

Disconnect from internet and close running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
Double click gmer.exe.
Let the gmer.sys driver load if asked.
If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…say Ok.
If no warning….
Click the rootkit tab
To the right of the program you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked… leave everything checked. Then click the Scan button. Wait for the scan to finish.
Once done click the Copy button.
Open Notepad and hit ctrl+v to paste the log. Save the log to your desktop please.

Click the >>> tab. This will open up all available tabs for you.
Click the Autostart tab then the scan button. Once its done click the Copy button and paste it into a new notepad document. Save that document to your desktop please.

And next do a scan with AVG Anti-Rookit:

Download AVG Anti Rootkit© by Grisoft and save it to your desktop.
Double-click on AVG_AntiRootkit.exe to run it.
Click I Agree to agree to the EULA.
By default it will install to "C:\Program Files\GRISOFT\AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta"
Click Next to begin the installation then click Install
It will then ask you to reboot now to finish the installation.
Click Finish and your computer will reboot.
After it reboots, double-click on the AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta shortcut that is now on your desktop.
Click on the Perform in-depth search button to begin the scan.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it complete.
When the scan is finished, click the Save result to file button.
Save the scan results to your desktop
Copy and Paste the scan results here

Post back the results of both the scans here in your next reply.

Sorry bsskkj4821. Try this link for gmer:

 Sorry, somehow I accidentially reposted your post as a quote. I am still learning how to post in this forum. I do appreciate you help. It took me some time to complete all of your instructions. Plus having to work more than 12 hours a day does not help.

I performed steps 1 through 4 as instructed.

Below are the logs requested

As for a description of how my PC is running, It appears the original IE7 problem is fixed  .

I performed a previous search on Ask.com and selected a returned link and was not redirected.

So far, So good. Hopefully, awaiting your final review and instructions :) !

Barry
Great Job! We now need to make sure you can see all hidden files and folders, explained below:
  • Click "Start".
  • Click "My Computer".
  • Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
  • Select the "View" tab.
  • Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading, select "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
  • Click "Yes" to confirm.
  • Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types".
  • Click "OK".
Next, could you please do me a favor. Could you visit Jotti's and upload the following file/files for analysis. Please post back with the results from Jotti's:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DMCPL.EXE

Just copy and paste the above line into the Jotti's scanner and post back the small report it generates.
:)
As requested the results are posted below. Service load: 0% 100% File: DMCPL.EXE Status: OK(Note: this file has been scanned before. Hi bskkj4821. I need you to boot the PC into safe mode, explained below:
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
Once you're at your desktop please double click on My Computer.
Double click on Local Disk (C: )
Double click on the Windows folder.
Double click on the system32 folder.

Once in the system32 folder find the file, DMCPL.EXE. Note that the letters might not be in all caps as I have shown here. Once you find the file please right click on it then left click on rename. A cursor will appear in the filename. Please rename the file to dmcpl.old. Click OK when you are warned about renaming the file. Please note that I don't wish to delete this file because I cannot discern if it is malicious, therefore I would like to keep it. Renaming it will deactivate it should it be malicious, but if after renaming this file and you find a program that doesn't run correctly we might want to rename it back to dmcpl.exe.

Next I would like you to run ATF cleaner again, instructions below.

Locate ATF Cleaner.exe and open it.

Under Main select the following:

Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Once you have finished this process please reboot the PC into normal mode and post a fresh Hijack This log and let me know if the PC is still running well.
Renamed DMCPL.EXE to DMCPL.old as requested

However, I believe it has something to do with my HP Pavilion zv5000 notebook screen/monitor.

The information below is from the dmcpl.exe properties/version tab

NVIDIA nView Control Panel. file version 6.14.10.4716
© NVIDIA Corporation

I have not seen any problems as of yet.
