I am trying to help my 72 year old relative with her computer. She lives in another town but I was there today and spent 4 hours or so trying to figure out what was wrong, but was unsuccessful.

The problem simply defined is everything runs very slowly. Bootup (after the desktop appears) takes a very long time (I timed it once at 6 minutes). Programs take a long time to load and to perform any action.

Here are some facts:
She tries to be very careful about installing any programs. She never downloads programs from the net and never knowingly runs programs received in email. She uses the computer little and mostly for email and looking at websites – either links friends send her or Google searches. She does not open email unless she knows who sent it. All of these thing she does only once or twice a week.
Her computer is about five years old.
She has 512 meg of memory and a 40 gig drive, of which less than 5 gig are used.
It was running fine until about 4 months ago when it began exhibiting this behavior. She says she thinks it began after her DSL internet provider came by and "did some things."

Things I have done:
I installed the latest version of AVG virus and adware checker, and did a full system scan – it showed no problems. She was running an earlier version of AVG all along.
I ran scandisk.
I ran Spybot and Ad-Aware. They found a couple of innocuous seeming things that they removed.
I flushed the Internet Explorer caches.
I ran Hijack This and uploaded the results to http://www.hijackthis.de/en. It showed only one potential problem program which I removed.

None of these things helped.

I then used the System Configuration Utility to boot in the Diagnostic Startup mode and everything came alive. Bootup was quick, programs loaded quickly, all seemed well.
I then retuned it to normal and, using a Startup Manager program, I disabled all programs it showed that start at bootup. No effect. It was back into its sloooow performance.

About then I ran out of time, reenabled her startup programs, and left for home.

Here is the latest Hijack This log:

NOTE: I installed Ad-Aware while trying to diagnose the problem. It was not running when I started the analysis.
Hi i_am_jim,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I'm sorry, but as explained in the original post, I do not currently have access to the computer. It is in another town. I was hoping the information posted would be enough to permit suggestions for what the problem might be.
