Hello. I am not noticing anything wrong with my computer, however rogers just sent me an email claiming I have an ircbot on my system. They are threatening to disconect my internet service if i do not find the bot and clean my drive. I have no idea what or where this "bot" is. My antivirus finds nothing. I am using updated versions of AVG, ZoneAlarm, Adaware, Spybot, Spyblaster, CCleaner, and now the two programs recommended on your homepage; malwarebytes & the other cleaning program. All of them find absolutely no problems. I had bitcomet but I just deleted it. Please see my hijack log and tell me if you find anything at all. I am on a wireless router but I have disabled wireless as both computers in the house are hooked up directly to it. Im runing windows xp edition 2 , on a pentium 4 with a linxsys router. Thankyou. Your system will not allow me to upload my hijack log so I have copy/pasted it here:

Hi bwitched,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.

  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click Advanced mode if not already selected.
  • Choose Yes at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the Tools menu.
  • Click Resident.
  • Uncheck the Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active. box.
  • In the File menu click Exit to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
    • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Hi Tom. Thankyou very much for looking at my case. I'm guessing that the BitComet was the bot that rogers is talking about, unless you see something in my hijack log that I dont, I cannot find any infections whatsoever with any of my programs. I got rid of Zone Alarm and am now using Comodo instead, simply because it was rated as a better firewall and provides keylogger protection.

Kapersky found absolutely NO adware, spyware, or Viruses on my computer. Hijack did have a few of the R0 entries that you told me to get rid of, which I did, but they came right back up again. here is the log…I am not having any issues with my computer and I haven't heard back from Rogers….strange.

I think it was more likely related to averice. However, I'm not finding anything now.

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point:

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

You may be asked to choose drive. Choose C: At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Hi Tom, followed your instructions to the letter and everything is understood. I read both recommended articles, however Avarice wasn't in the list. I have uninstalled it though just to be safe. My only running p2p at present is MIRC and it only runs when I am using it. Thankyou very much for your advice. ~Kat~
