Hello all

Need some advice moving from Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2007, I do not have OL 2007 installed at present, but When ever I try to install OL 2007, it work fine until I receive emails with word or excel attachments,
when I try to open the attachments OL stops responding or freezes, for about 2 to 3 minutes until word or excel open the doc, sometimes the whole system will lock up, sending attachments is ok,
I have tried OL 2007 with the full 2007 office suite (Clean Install) and also with 2003 word and excel, makes no diffence, also tried turning off Antivirus email scanning, and disabling all OL 2007 addins,
Running Outlook with and without updates, still no go.
I do not have the Google Desktop installed, which does cause some problems, I intend to try again this weekend, and done a lot of searching for similar problems and fix's, but no joy.
The funny thing is that if I run OL 2007 and get my emails with attachments, then close OL, without veiwing them, then reopen outlook I can veiw the attachments with no problem
Does anyone have any ideals what could be causing this, so I can try and get OL 2007 working, without having to save all attachements before I can veiw them.

For starters.... I don't have an answer... and it looks like a whole bunch of folks posting on the internet also don't have an answer.

Since you serve in Malware Team, you are a well practiced researcher... so I won't try to get by with offering suggestions from Google.
However, this Thread does have many of the fix suggestions I've come across all rolled into one sad Thread:

Next I'll try to explore a few anecdotal question/suggestions from recent experience.

What type of Account are your using? POP3, Exchange, Imap, HTTP email server ?

Do you have any of the following installed?
Skype and/or Skype Toolbar?
Google Desktop?
Google Toolbar ?
Do you have MVPS Hosts File installed?
Are you running IE 8.0?

What Spam Blocker do you have running, if any? For instance WindowWasher, or maybe your AntiVirus has a specialty email scan?

Have you installed Outlook SP2 (February 2009)

The Word and/or Excel attachements.... Do they contain special scripting? (normal.dot for Word) (Macros for Excel) ?
Does the same "hang" problem occur with .doc and/or .xls that do not have special.dot or macros?

In Control Panel - Add/Remove - Set Program Access and Defaults.... Do you have it set for Microsoft or for Custom ?

From direct experience (I use Outlook 2003 full version clean install)
I've been sending the exact same Excel spreadsheet to dozens and maybe hundreds of customers for a few years.
Only recently, some of those same customers are no longer able to download and/or open the Excel spreadsheet.
It does have self-calculating macros.

This behavior has occurred coincident with recent MS updates, SP3 and adoption of IE 8.0
I haven't unraveled it enough to determine if any specific update or use of IE 8.0 is actually involved in this new "blocking behavior".
And of course it could be the Antivirus/Antispyware scanner installed by some of those customers.

Since I don't have a solution or even a focused method to investigate this problem with you, I am hoping that maybe one of my above questions/suggestions may jog a thought that could lead to some trial-and-error trouble-shooting to try to rule-out and narrow down the possible solutions.

Some good information there, thankyou.


I use a POP3 email account

Do you have any of the following installed?
Skype and/or Skype Toolbar?
Google Desktop?
Google Toolbar ?
Do you have MVPS Hosts File installed?
Are you running IE 8.0?

No to all the above, but I do use a HOST file, Bluetacks



My system is fully patched with all latestest SP's and updates


As far as I am aware the word doc's do not contain special scripting, the excel docs do contain a lot of macros,
however to test OL 2007 I sent a word doc which was blank except for the word Tester, and also the same for excel,
with the word Tester in one cell, again same problem trying to open them once I received them

I have also tried disabling all Antivirus and Malware protection, no spam blocker except Outlooks own.



I am beginning to think, that OL 2007 is going to be more trouble than it's worth, but before I give up I have a good search
over those links you posted.

You may have good reason to use Custom (for instance, you've selected your own preferred utilities)

If you haven't already, consider returning the setting to >Microsoft<
Then give it another go with Outlook.

Hi Doug Sorry to say did not help, I even tried restoring my system back to XP SP3 and Drivers only with a ATI backup, installed Office 2007 and tried again, I could not believe my eyes when OL 2007 hung trying to open a word attachment , I sent from my wifes system, even tried adding Office 2007 SP1 and all updates, still no go, guess that shows 100% it's a MS problem, I think I wait for now and stick with Office 2003, and google every few months to see how things are going with this type of problem, before I try again. Hi Doug Just thought you may like to know, but Office 2007 SP2 has sorted this problem, do not know how, but it's gone, guess I move over to Office 2007 now..
