I see that a lot of people can identify the virus they are having problems with. Unfortunately, I am too noobish to even do that. I can however verify that I do have a virus. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am running Windows XP and here is my Hijack Log:

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

VERY IMPORTANT !!!
Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please advise.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now
Thanks for the help!

I have been trying to get this done but now I can't get to desktop. The few times I have been able to get to my desktop (using CTRL-ALT-DLT) the I was unable to get to this webpost before it rebooted. I put the combofix on a slash drive and tried that, but again I was unable to get to the desktop long enought to navigte to the file in the shared drive.

This is the endless loop I see when I try to log on:

logonui.exe - Application Error

The instruction at (0x002906b7" referenced memory at "0x002906b7", The memory could not be "written".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on Cancel to debug the program

Any advice would be appreciated. If all else fails I will probably have my friend wipe it clean and reinstall xp for me. If you think I am at the point where it would be a better idea to that, don't be afraid to suggest it. :)

Thanks

Gino
Hi,

Have you tried to boot into safe mode with networking?

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY repeatedly,
  • this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode with Networking
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
  • go into your usual account

or have you tried to boot into the 'Last Known Good Configuration' ?

1. Start your computer.

2. When you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press the F8 key.

3. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.

See if you can now access your computer

If you can run the ComboFix program

If you cannot boot into safe mode…do you have your XP CD you may be able to do a repair Install and not lose all your data,

let me know

CB
I was able to get onto the computer using safe mode with networking. (not sure if I was supposed to be able to or not, but I couldn't get an internet connection). Using my flash drive, I ran combofix and I got the following error:

Error

!!ALERT!! It is NOT SAFE to continue!

The contents of the ComboFix package has been compromised
Please download a fresh copy from:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/howto-use-combofix

Note: You may be infected with a file patching virus (Virut)
Unfortunately that indicates only one thing:

Bad news I am afraid you have the VIRUT FILE INFECTOR

VIRUTCANNOT BE CLEANED.

Virut
is a polymorphic file infector with some additional features. It spreads all around the drive and infects even files infected by another virus previously. Unfortunately, the cleaning of this virus is impossible.

The only thing you can do is a full reformat and install.

We have an excellent tutorial on how to reformat here

Things to bear in mind, only back up data files (word, excell etc.) DO NOT backup any .exe/.scr/.htm/.html/.xml/.zip/.pif/.com/.rar files… As they will ALL be infected and will simply re-infect your system again.

Read more about the VIRUT FILE INFECTOR HERE

If you don't have a Windows Installation Disk (if this came with Windows pre-installed), you may have a Manufacturer restore disk to restore the computer to its original state - this depends on the Manufacture though. Otherwise, give the Manufacturer a call and ask them to send you a restore disk or Windows installation CD.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
I am sorry there is nothing more that we can do.

More information:

http://free.avg.com/66558
There are bugs in the viral code. When the virus produces infected files, it also creates non-functional files that also contain the virus.

http://home.mcafee.com/VirusInfo/VirusProf…aspx?key=143034
W32/Virut.h is a polymorphic, entry point obscuring (EPO) file infector with IRC bot functionality. It can accept commands to download other malware on the compromised machine.
It appends to the end of the last section of executable (PE) files an encrypted copy of its code. The decryptor is polymorphic and can be located either:
Immediately before the encrypted code at the end of the last section
At the end of the code section of the infected host in 'slack-space' (assuming there is any)
At the original entry point of the host (overwriting the original host code)

Miekiemoes
, a highly regarded expert in malware removal, and an MS-MVP,
has an extremely informative blog post about Virut. - she only ever recommends a total reformat.
At least I know :). Thank you so much for your time and help. I really appreciate it. This is a great forum! Enjoy the rest of your weekend :). Thanks, Gino
