[Closed] Google Search Results Redirected

6 min read

This thread's last reply is from . Advice, software, and links below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

I am not at all computer savvy. I'm a 22 yr. old med student, but I'm assuming that I've run into some virus. When I attempt to search with google the results show up with the correct descriptions, but once I click on it I'm redirected to a site that has absolutely nothing to do with the results. Please if you can, help me. I saw that I should include an HJT log:

Last night I lost my sound as well as my start button. It restored itself this morning. I'm not sure if it's at all related, but if someone could please help it would be greatly appreciated.

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi V.Y. and welcome to What the Tech :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:
  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
Vista Advice:

All applications I ask to be used will require to be run in Administrator mode. IE: Right click on and select Run as Administrator.

The Operating System(Vista aka Windows 6) in use comes with a inbuilt utility called User Access Control(UAC) when prompted by this with anything I ask you to do carry out please select the option Allow.

Your machine is also missing a vital Service Pack, do not be alarmed OK, this is more for your information and we will address this when I give the all clear. Do not install it until I ask you to.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner to your desktop.
  • Right-click on ATF-Cleaner.exe and select Run as Administrator to run the application.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • Close the application.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Close the application.
Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Right-click on mbam-setup.exe and select Run as Administrator, follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Click on the Logs radio tab.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to Restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Next:

Now lets carry out a more in-depth scan of your computer shall we as follows:
  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application.
  • Right click on RSIT.exe and select Run as Administrator to start RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.
When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:
  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log.
  • Both RSIT logs. <– Post them individually please.
I could not open the link for the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware software. I received this error: Firefox can't find the server at www.malwarebytes.org. The browser could not find the host server for the provided address. I did not proceed to the next step. I will wait for further instructions.
Hi :) This is most likely due to the infection(s) present. OK try with Internet Explorer please, if still no success just post both the RSIT logs and we will go from there
Hi :) Could you post them both please, I never like having to download the logs so I can research them. Plus with this being a Anti-Malware teaching forum also it is advantageous for all to be able to view logs etc, thank you.

Hi :)

Free up Hard-Drive Space:

System drive C: has 4 GB (3%) free of 144 GB

This is not ideal at all. A Hard-Drive requires a bare minimum of 15% available free space to be able to function correctly, but at least 25% is better in my opinion.

I advise you read this article: What to do if your Computer's running slowly and choose to uninstall some documents, pictures and software etc you do not require. You need to do this before we proceed otherwise it is going to prove somewhat difficult to download/install anything I wish to use during the course of the malware removal process. This is just my advice as the lack of current Hard-Drive space will be impacting on overall system performance also.

Next:

Please make sure that RSIT.exe is still on the Desktop.(if not inform myself straight away please)
  • Right click on RSIT.exe and select Run as Administrator to start RSIT.
  • RSIT will start running, at the disclaimer click on Continue.
  • When done, 1 log will be produced.
  • Post that in your next reply.

Hi :) Do you still need help with your machine? If the instructions are unclear or something isn't working, please let me know before proceeding.
Yes, I would still like to have your help. I've been attempting to remove some of the pictures and programs and put them onto a portable hard drive. I'm not sure how much space I have now. Is there a way to check for that before proceeding to posting the next log?
Hi :)

A quick easy to check available space as follows:

Click on Start >> My Computer >> and you should see something similiar to this: [attachment removed: VistaHDDIcon.gif]

If still not sure, not a problem and proceed to the below OK
