Win XP SP3 Home edition

My sister was using the pc when the pc got infected.
I have disinfected the pc (and done checks with online scans and a lot of other programs), but my sister has told me:
1) When problems begun an instant "icon" appeared stating some new HW which could be harmful was doing something (installing?).
2) After that, the ding-dong began a]Repeatedely, before an automatic Chkdsk. b] when closing the lid, 1 inch or less before the PC went in sleeping mode. c] when opening the pc lid and nearing maximum limit.
The problem has been solved and event a] has disappeared, but events b] and c] are still present.
My doubt: is really all ok and is that a consequence of some resets or settings … or is there something to check?
If everything is ok, how could I get rid of the ding-dong event when dealing with the pc lid?
