[Resolved] Firefox google search bar takes me to ad sites

Hi folks,
I think my browser has been hijacked, when I use the google search bar, the bottom left of the browser reports about 5 URLS it's going to before it finishes loading the search results, however the search results are not from google but some other search site. I'm hoping this is a really easy fix. Oh, I also tried to install avg free, but the installation failed at the end with this message:

So at the moment I've got no anti-virus, I uninstalled MacAfee the other day, because my system collapsed and I kept getting the blue screen of death, so had to uninstall most things.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe)
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Right-click ATF-Cleaner.exe and select "Run as administrator" to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.


Then:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Right-click mbam-setup.exe, select "Run as administrator" and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Hi LD,
Thank you for taking the time to help me out.
I ran the ATF cleaner fine, then did a reboot, clicked on the malware bytes link once booted, however, both firefox and IE have a page load error or do not display the page, it looks like this URL, http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php doesn't exist according to the browsers. A couple of weeks ago I did download the exe file (cant remember why now), but never installed it, so I've tried that now, by right clicking and Running As Admin, got to the end of the install, and clicked finish with both checkboxes selected. Nothing happened, so I right clicked an ran from the Program Files menu, and now windows has a dialog box saying that the program has stopped working, looking at the details dropdown, it says there was an APPCRASH and it just keeps doing this. So I'll post this to see what steps are next.

P.S. Just to add, I've tried installing things like spybot, but they don't run either once installed.

I'm wondering if it's blocking the MBAM run. Try renaming MBAM.exe to MBAM.com Now see if it will run.

Hi LD,
what a flippin nightmare, the whole system just crashed and stopped working for every application, with this APPCRASH name, I ended up with no desktop, and a very old looking windows version, almost like 98, was terrible, my browsers were also prevented from working, so i had no way to access online help, untill I fired the start up to safe mode. I then did a search for resetting the acer laptops back to their factory settings. I have now finished this after a lot of hours of crossing fingers. and it looks like I'm ok, however I would really appreciate you looking over this latest hijackthis record to see if I'm free of the wee virulent bugger :o)

Yes that looks like it got rid of it. I'd keep that MBAM program and run it once a week. Also be sure to keep windows updated as well as any other protection you have.
