Hi everyone -

At some point last night I got a virus which is creating numerous DWHxxxx.TMP files in one of my user profiles. This profile's settings are now unable to load. I am running my computer through what looks like a default profile. The desktop is cleared and the background picture is black. I do still have programs that I have downloaded (i.e., Mozilla, I-Tunes), however when I opened i-tunes, it wanted me to reinstall.

I was able to reach most important files through the SW_preload(c:)\Users\ It appears the information is still there, but the virus is not allowing me to load my profile normally. I have backed them up on a flash drive.

I have Symantec endpoint protection and Windows Vista Business. Symatec only quarantines the files. I have tried to run a full symantec scan, but the program shuts down, giving me the following error:

If anyone has any ideas for this problem, I will be greatly thankful. Unfortunately, I am a student and finals are coming up, so this could not have happened at a worse time.

Thank you in advance!

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe)
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Right-click ATF-Cleaner.exe and select "Run as administrator" to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Right-click mbam-setup.exe, select "Run as administrator" and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Thank you, LDTate. I want to let you know that after trying multiple spyware/malware removers, the computer was still not functional (programs removed, could not save word documents, etc.)

I needed access to it, so I wiped the hard drive clean, and reformatted the computer. Thanks again for this service.
