I picked this beauty up trying to find a video converter for my new Sony Walkman.

NOD32 found it (too late, alas), but cannot seem to clean it out. The virus actually caused a problem in NOD32, so the systray icon won't display properly unless I reinstall it, but then with each reboot it's gone again.

Also at each reboot, Windows Explorer is telling me that the files in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp are not valid.

Lastly, many of my startup items have been affected (Adobe items, DirectCD, Palm HotSync, etc.). Ad-Aware did seem to find some issues, but even Ad-Aware seemed affected, so I deleted it before finding this forum and doing this HijackThis log. I've also been in the process of removing the remnants of Norton stuff…

Thanks for any help you can give.

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open the HijackThis Folder. Find the file HijackThis.exe, Right Click on the file and Select Rename. Rename Hijackthis.exe to Spyware.exe.

Post a new HijackThis Log.
Hi, and thanks for responding.

Since I first wrote, I looked at other forums and did a lot of scanning with other programs: SuperAntispyware, AVG, VundoFix. Those removed all they found. One bad dll wouldn't delete, but I was able to add a .bad extension to the end of it. It *seems* that the infection is gone, but I'm not totally sure - there's still a red X for my C: icon, Windows Defender is jacked (should I just remove that?), and when I try to read emails, it wants to install Publisher. I followed your directions, and here's the log:

Lets see what we're up against.

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
——————————————————————–
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
——————————————————————–

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
I've followed the directions. ComboFix has been running for almost 1 1/2 hours now. It shows "Completed Stage_29", and the cursor is no longer visible or blinking in the window. I just realized, though, that I did NOT disable NOD32 before running it. Is this normal? Should I quit it and try again, or let it run? Thanks, Tim
Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
It shouldn't run anymore the 20 minutes. Did you do the above?
If combofix won't run, do this.

Lets run an F-Secure online scan it will scan for Viruses, Spyware and RootKits:
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Start scanning button. A window will pop up.
  • Allow the Active X control to be installed on your computer, then click the Accept button
  • Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete.
  • If malware is found, check Submit samples to F-Secure then select Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click Cancel, then New Scan
  • When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure
  • Click Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post

Note: This scan will only work with Internet Explorer.
You must be logged on a administrator rights to run this scan.
The scan may take a few hours.

Also let me know how the computer is running now.
Ok - tried ComboFix again and it ran smoothly. Here's the logs:

We now suggest that you install the Windows Recovery Console. The Windows recovery console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode that allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Installing the Recovery Console

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

[external image: Posted Image]

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

[external image: Posted Image]

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

Please do not reboot your machine until we have reviewed the log.
All went fine - here's CF_RC.txt: WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Home-BootDisk-ENU.exe [boot loader] timeout=2 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /usepmtimer C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
You have a few infection which infects legitimate files, it can be a bit of a pain

1. Download RenV.exe by sUBs to your desktop
2. Double click on it to run it
