Hello: My laptop is taking longer & longer to boot. It spends a lot of time "thinking" on an empty desktop screen before icons begin to appear. Finally, the quick start icons eventually appear in the taskbar. It seems I have upwards of 77 processes running at any given time & don't believe all are necessary. I use AVG for anti-virus protection, ZoneAlarm for my firewall, Spybot, Windows Defender, & Spywareblaster for anti-spyware. All of my recent scans show nothing suspicious on my machine. I'd like to know what to do to figure out the cause of the slow down and how I can clean things up to get my boot up process back on track.
Hi Saba

77 processes? A wonder it even boots. :)

To start with, please download StartupLite: http://www.malwarebytes.org/startuplite.php
Its a stand alone portable program, so no install needed. Just run the .exe icon.
Place a checkmark in each and every item it suggest that is not neccessary. Except
for CTF.mon.

Reboot.

Please Run the PCPitstop Full Tests, here:
http://www.pcpitstop.com
Note: Vista users with UAC must first Right-click IE - Select "Run as Administrator"
Register and create a password
Accept the ActiveX component to allow your machine to run the Full Tests
Registering and accepting the ActiveX are both SAFE and FREE.
Full Tests is the first item in the left hand column of that page.

The Full Tests take less than 5 minutes for most machines.
Once you have your Results, please post the TechExpress Link back here into this thread for review.
TechExpress is the last item on the list in the yellow box in upper right area of any Results page.
Post the entire URL link information back here into this Forum thread.
Note: Vista users, please close your instance of IE "Rrunning as Administrator" after you are finished reviewing your Results.

Caution: During the testing of Video Adapter, a variety of patterns, shapes, colors and text are “flashed” onto the users monitor screen. In the many thousands of daily uses of the PCPitstop Full Tests over several years, two individuals who suffer epilepsy experienced discomfort and temporary dizziness when viewing the flashing patterns.
If you know that you are susceptible to photo driven seizure, please look away from your screen during the Video Adapter testing sequence.
Note: The PCPitstop Full Tests Results is a free service, but is supported by various paid product advertisements for utilities that "could" remedy the OP's problem.
Since WTT is a "free-help" forum, we do not recommend or endorse purchase of automated utilities, and will assist you in manually correcting any problems and settings necessary to optimize your machine's performance. Ask your questions here. We'll help you walk through any necessary steps.

Sorry it took so long for my reply…just saw your post now. I will try your suggestions & let you know how it works out!
Good Morning Saba,

Abydos sent a note indicating he may need to be away for a period of time.
I'll step in to assist with your work for the time-being, if that is OK with you.

You appear to have a fine machine that should meet most of your office, internet browsing, email correspondence, media display, media file management, and light gaming activity needs.

A problem with "fine machines" is that we tend to add more, and then a little more, and more applications to increase our enjoyment and productivity when using the machine.
That's generally a good thing.
The problem occurs because many common application and utility software authors tend to want their own software to gain a prominent position in your machine's schedule.
Even that can be a good thing in most cases, until the number of utilities trying to gain a top position in your machine's StartUp List becomes so great that the machine is compelled to load and try to handle too much all at the same time.
Often we may not even be aware of some of the "stuff" that is monopolizing the machine's resources.

Computers are like all other machines. They run better and last longer if proper maintenance is performed.

Looks like you got a good start with Abydos' assistance, but have some additional maintenance work to do.

We'll benefit from a more graphic presentation of your current StartUps.

Please consider running this simple utility that will help you get control of programs and processes that you wish to have running active, or not.

CodeStuff-Starters
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/Starter.html

Download and install, agreeing to the licensing terms and allow to install with all of the default settings as preselected in the installation wizard.

When you finally allow CodeStuff-Starters to run
It will preselect StartUps Tab)
• Click on File
• Select - save as .html (name the report file - Startups May6.html)

In your next reply, post the file as an attached file (use browse and upload buttons – at the bottom-right corner of your topic posting window where you are typing your next reply)

Please do not make any changes with Code-Stuff Starters, until after you post the requested information above and receive recommendations from a helper here.

There are additional items to be addressed in maintenance:
I'll list a few now, but will give you specific step-by-step information after we have a look at the above CodeStuff Starters
  • Clear Temps and JAVA Cache
  • JAVA JRE - Need to remove old vulnerable version and install update
  • Restore Points management: Reduce reserved space
  • Consider updating AntiVirus version to 8.5 or substitue with Avira/or/Avast
  • Adjust Receive Buffer Size
  • Disk Error Checking
  • Disk Defrag
  • Consider uninstall of various unnecessary utilities and applications (user choice) including indexing and desktop management utilities
  • Investigate Dell Battery Recall (your machine is listed - need to check Battery serial number to confirm need or not for Recall
  • investigate power settings and CPU automatic throttling

Best Regards
Hi, Doug: Thanks for taking up my case! I ran the program as you requested….and attached the resultant file. Additionally, even though I know I am only supposed to follow your wise instructions, I defragged my hard drive after recently following Abydos' wise instructions and awaiting his response. Hopefully, that doesn't throw a monkey wrench into anything you have planned as I did see it on your list of future tasks! Thanks much!
Saba, No Harm, No Foul in running Defrag. But probably a wasted or duplicated effort at this time. I like to take care of the specific changes before cleaning up with the general procedures. Sort of like wiping the table and counters before sweeping the floor, instead of the other way around. _______________________________ Remarkably, you can turn-off (disable) most of those StartUps except Apoint AVG8_tray ZoneAlarm Client ______________________________ Use your new CodeStuff Starters - StartUps (tab) panel to "unselect" by removing the checkmark/tick from in front of items except those listed abover (your pointer pad, your antivirus, and your firewall) Then reboot. Run a fresh PCPitstop Full Tests and and post a fresh link to your new results. let us know how your machine is handling with the changes. You can always run any of those startups manually by clicking on their desktop icon or program executable when you want/need to use them. In the meantime, disabling them will remarkably reduce the load on your machine. _______________- After you do the above, we'll review the results and take a few more steps. Doug p.s. I agree with you that Abydos is "wise". He is a remarkable helper and we are fortunate to have him on staff.
Allrighty…I disabled all of the startups except those you mentioned in your last post & rebooted. Please find the requested file attached. Upon reboot, I did not notice an appreciable difference between pre-disable & post-disable total boot times….my computer still seems to be hanging up between the time my desktop picture appears and when all of the desktop icons and taskbar appear. Hopefully, we can still explore some options to remedy that! Points of curiosity: Can or will those start-ups return in the future as I utilize their programs? If so, am I correct in assuming that I can follow this same procedure to disable them once again? Thanks, Doug!

Yes. Many process and application authors are quite "persistent".

I'll be right back.

You posted "Services" instead of StartUps.

I would still like to see the fresh StatUps report.

You can download ATF-Cleaner and run it:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
Note: I tend to "unselect" PreFetch items

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.
This normal slow down of boot for the first time is due to clearing the Prefetch, which in my opinion is not necessary unless infected.
Your choice.

Also please run a fresh PCPitstop Full Test and post the link.
