crazydiamond,

There is still not something right about your Java install. There are still traces of out of date versions. Let's run Javara again.

JavaRa …by: Paul McLain and Fred de Vries

Please download JavaRa (Copyright © 2008 RaProducts.org) and unzip it to your desktop.
***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***
Print these instructions…you won't have Internet access during this particular phase!
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English or the appropriate language…and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the JavaRa log, in your next reply.

Also please let me see a new HijackThis log.
Well JavaRa said it removed something but I thought it said that last time!

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    C:\Program Files\AskSBar\bar\1.bin\A2PLUGIN.DLL

    Folder::

    Registry::

    Driver::
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

How does it seem like it's running now?
When I boot up I get a screen that asks me to choose which operating system I want to use, and then it automatically picks XP so… not sure what to make of that… Otherwise I don't see too much of a change. Firefox froze while trying to load a video, but Trend Micro was trying to open as well. Trend had also tried to perform a scan while I was at work but apparently it froze or messed up or something because when I came home I couldn't get it to close and it wouldn't show me the progress it had already made. My computer was *supposed* to be in stand-by while I was gone anyway but apparently it decided not to do that. Did you need the new combofix log? And should I go ahead and run a Trend Micro scan?
crazydiamond, Yes please. I'd like to see the new ComboFix log. And sure, go ahead and run your AV scan. Don't be to terribly concerned because odds are that it will target some part of ComboFix as a threat.
Okay so actually my AV is acting up quite a bit. After I disabled it to run ComboFix I tried to re-enable it and it froze up. After trying to end it with the task manager and waiting ~15 minutes I rebooted and it loaded fine. Then Firefox froze again and I had to restart. Also I didn't copy/paste the ComboFix log into a word document before I had to restart because I figured I'd be able to post it if you needed it (it got as far as my clipboard), and now I can't find the notepad file. It's not in the Combofix folder on the C: drive. Where can I find it?
crazydiamond,

Please:
  • Right click on START on the left end of your Windows toolbar (lower left corner of your screen)
  • Click on Explore
  • Click on Local Disk (C:) in the left-hand window pane
  • Look for ComboFix.txt in the right-hand window pane and right click on it
  • Put your cursor (arrow) on Open With
  • Move your cursor to the new menu that opens and click on Choose Program…
  • Click on Notepad

When file opens, Copy/Paste text here

crazydiamond,

I'd like you to please re-run a Malwarebytes' scan. Please update it before running scan.

Start Malwarebytes'
Click on the Updates tab
Click on the Check of Updates button

After update finishes, please perform a scan like you did earlier, and post the results here.

Also, please let me have a new HijackThis log and let me know how your computer is running.
I can't seem to get my computer to go into standby mode, it will shut down but it completely ignores clicking on standby. I also still get the screen at boot-up asking which OS I want to use but it makes the decision automatically so…

crazydiamond,

I also still get the screen at boot-up asking which OS I want to use but it makes the decision automatically so…

That is because you now have the recovery console installed on your computer. It should show that message for about 2 seconds and then go one. If you ever have a systems crash, you may be able to use the recovery console to… well… recover. :) . Vista has it pre-installed but XP required you to install it from the disk. You installed it from the internet so in case of crisis, you won't have to find your disk.

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

Then

We need to repair some of windows' internal registration settings
  • Please download Dial-A-Fix from one of the following mirrors:
  • Extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Double click Dial-a-Fix.exe to start the program.
  • Press the green double checkmark box (Looks like this: [external image: Posted Image])
  • UNcheck "Empty Temp Folders", as well as "Adjust Time/Date" in the prep section.
  • Press the GO button in the bottom of the window.
  • Exit/Close Dial-A-Fix

Now let me know if that helped with your standby issue. If not, please tell me what kind of a computer you have.
Before I do that, it seems like I'm getting *more* browser freezes than usual since yesterday's Malwarebytes' scan (I think). It's not even sites that would do it normally. WhattheTech hasn't made it freeze but another message board I frequent now does it and didn't do it before. Twice tonight I've had to reboot because of freezes; once after MS Word froze after the Malwarebytes' scan and I was trying to copy/paste so I could save it, and once after my previous post after I navigated away from WTT. Unfortunately these things always happen after I tell you everything seems OK :) EDIT: if I'm being an idiot and doing things I'm not supposed to while we're fixing this problem let me know! I don't have to do other stuff on the Web RIGHT NOW, I can always catch up later. :)
Still no standby, apparently!* But actually now that I think about it, the laptop hasn't gone into standby on its own since…well, since the screen saver quit working/I disabled it, before December…If I leave it sit, no matter how long, I'll come back and it's still signed-in and ready to go. I just never really realized it because I haven't SENT it into standby in a long time. I usually just shut it down when I'm done, or leave it be. Not sure if the screensaver's working now or not. And I definitely am getting more freezes. I ran both programs you asked, and Combofix uninstalled itself. My sound card also isn't working more often. I have a Dell Insperon 1501, and I've had it for at least 3 years…or whenever Vista first came out because I was *right* on the cusp of that…I could have gotten a free upgrade but didn't since it was so new. Anyway, what's next? *OK not entirely true! About 10-15 minutes after telling it to go into standby, LITERALLY right when I was in the middle of this post, it went. I almost panicked. So standby works, it just takes it a while to actually decide to do it. Just like several other things. :/
crazydiamond,

I think your song is playing. :) . Pink Floyd is singing "Shine on you Crazy Diamond". Maybe that't an omen that your computer will magically start working right? Probably not. :(

Well, we are beyond what I can be helpful with. I think it's time to send you over to the Tech Team. I suggest that you post in the Windows forum. The know way more about the workings of your computer than I do. Please post a link there back to this thread so they can look at your scans in case there is something helpful there for them.

As far as malware goes, Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point:

  • Download SysRestorePoint to your desktop and unzip it to it's own folder.
  • Double click SysRestorePoint.exe so that we can make a new system restore point.
  • A box will pop up after it has made a new point, usually after a few seconds. Close that window and exit the program.
Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
