Hello! I have been having some minor problems with my laptop for a couple months now and I've been coping with them fairly well but they are getting a little annoying. So I figure it's time to do something about them! Firstly, on April 2, Trend Micro detected a file called "TROJ_generic.dim" and locked it safely. I, not being very techie, didn't do anything else about it. Then on the next sweep, today, it found it again (I guess I should say "still"). Google led me here. Back in January I had some problems with PNCRT.dll but downloaded RegCure and that seemed to fix it. I have not run RegCure since.
However, I've been having some behavioral problems and I'm not sure what's causing them. I had the motherboard replaced back in perhaps December when it would not boot up at all after a few false starts, and had some additional memory installed at the time since it was running slowly at startup. Things were fine for a while. Now, I seem to be having some problems with my video and/or audio devices. Sites that contain a lot of Flash content (like game sites) or videos (like Youtube) or embedded videos cause my browser to freeze 98% percent of the time. I have the latest versions of Flash, Quicktime, WMP, RealPlayer, and Winamp installed, to the best of my knowledge. At first I thought it was IE, and I switched to Firefox (also current version). It was better than IE but now it's about the same. I'm not entirely sure what triggers the freeze, as sometimes accidentally clicking on an ad will freeze everything up. I can usually tell when my system is about to act up, though, by listening to the sounds. If the sound quits working (and if I go to look at my sound device it will say there isn't one) I can bet that if I do even the slightest thing wrong, CATASTROPHIC BROWSER FREEZE.Other programs I have open will be fine, with the exception of perhaps WMP or Winamp but usually those are the first to go since they have sound. I cannot open new programs when Firefox freezes. I can occasionally kill it from the task menu, but it may take upwards of 15-20 minutes to do so, and then when it does close there's this chaotic moment when every sound triggered during the freeze tries to play at once. Then things are ok! That's the main problem. Minor problems include being incredibly slow to log off/shut down (occasionally), not being able to turn on my screensaver because turning it off will freeze the system, and my laptop not recognizing any USB device unless it is plugged in prior to powering up most of the time.
I'm using Windows XP, and have Trend Micro as my main antivirus and antispyware with Spysweeper as a backup antispyware (installed by Geek Squad 2 years ago when laptop went INSANE and fell off the Internet). Any help would be appreciated.

Hi crazydiamond,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Nothing obvious showing. Let's try a couple things.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hello Tomk! Here's what you've asked for. I see no real difference in performance, but my sound card did quit working after I downloaded ATF Cleaner. It's fine now; I rebooted. I haven't tried anything that usually sets my browser into fits yet because I wanted to actually get this posted. :) While I was trying to install Malwarebytes, a box popped up telling me I needed the CD (it was trying to configure "Scan") and I had to hit "cancel" for that like 4-5 times. I've never had this happen while downloading a program, it usually only happens when I hook up the scanner and scan a picture (because I accidentally uninstalled my HP Photowhatever program and my roommate can't find the CD–it's her printer). Everything worked out, though, but it's odd that that would pop up. Anyway here's my Malwarebytes log and my HijackThis log:

Thanks!
Malwarebytes' removed some remnants of TROJ_generic.dim. Hopefully that will end the warnings you've been getting. It also removed some adware which released some resources which may provide improvement in speed.

I have no idea what the deal with your scanner is/was. Usually the programs you need are available on the internet for most scanners. When we are done here, you may want to seek help over in the hardware forum.

Meanwhile, let's do another scan to help determine if there is any malware left on your machine. This scan will take hours so be prepared. :)

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
I'll post these results tomorrow since the scan will take so long. Also I'm not sure if I should have mentioned this earlier but when I ran HJT the second time, it said that a change had been made and that it was going to change it back. I figured it was because malwarebytes changed something. Sorry I can't be more specific; I didn't write down the message.
crazydiamond, There's no problem with posting back tommorrow. I don't know what the warning might have been. HijackThis shouldn't have changed anything. We'll just carry on until we know something different. :)
Tomk, there were a few problems with Kaspersky last night. At first it couldn't finish downloading all the updates and MS Word froze when I tried to open it, before the error message popped up. I rebooted and tried again (because I couldn't kill MS Word from the task manager), and it worked. The keyboard typed funny while the updates were downloading the first time; my cursor would randomly switch positions, and the Internet was running very slowly but I'll chalk that up to me trying to do too many things at once while a large program was running.Things went much better the second time around, I just let it run and played Solitaire and pinball a few times while waiting for the updates to complete themselves. The scan itself didn't seem to cause any problems. My sound device currently isn't working but that may be because the computer was left on all night. Anyway, here is what Kaspersky found: ——————————————————————————– KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7.0 REPORT Tuesday, April 14, 2009 Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600) Kaspersky Online Scanner version: 7.0.26.13 Program database last update: Tuesday, April 14, 2009 05:45:38 Records in database: 2042558 ——————————————————————————– Scan settings: Scan using the following database: extended Scan archives: yes Scan mail databases: yes Scan area - My Computer: C:\ D:\ Scan statistics: Files scanned: 97732 Threat name: 2 Infected objects: 2 Suspicious objects: 0 Duration of the scan: 02:12:18 File name / Threat name / Threats count C:\Program Files\AskSBar\bar\1.bin\A2PLUGIN.DLL Infected: not-a-virus:WebToolbar.Win32.MyWebSearch.dw 1 C:\Program Files\mIRC\mirc.exe Infected: not-a-virus:Client-IRC.Win32.mIRC.631 1 The selected area was scanned. * IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
ComboFix detected Norton Internet Security 2006 is running, but I don't have Norton listed anywhere in my programs, and it is NOT what I use as my antivirus protection. I've already disabled Trend Micro, which is what I do use. I couldn't find Norton to disable it, and now combofix says that it will continue the scan with that program running. Should I allow it to do that or should I do some more looking?
crazydiamond,

Let's change the way you start the program.

Go to [external image: Posted Image] -> Run -> copy/paste the following single line command in the runbox & click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

[external image: Posted Image]
  • DO NOT USE your computer for any other purpose while ComboFix is running.
  • ComboFix may restart your computer, this is normal.
  • When finished, it will produce a log, ComboFix.txt.
  • Please post ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

crazydiamond,

Do this first:

Use the link below to see how to run the Norton Removal Tool
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…005033108162039

After running the removal tool try running ComboFix again. If you still get the warning, continue on.
Okay! After getting rid of Norton things went without a hitch! Here are the two logs you asked for. And as a completely random side-note, I love how polite and proper ComboFix is. :)

crazydiamond,

I like the log it gives me and how well it works. :D

Your Java is out of date and you have other old versions still on your computer, those old versions are now a security vulnerability:

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer - Version 6 update 13

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::

    Folder::

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecAntiVirus]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecFirewall]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{0c9f02d2-e998-11dd-944c-0015c5c93e06}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{1cba0cc1-67b5-11dc-bba6-0015c5cf5efa}]

    Driver::
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

I'm not sure what the deal is with Kaspersky, but the same problems came up again: first it got stuck trying to install the program at 20%, then it couldn't load all the updates because it timed itself out (and I'm not even using dial-up!), and I got a message about not being able to start a java applet. I had to start it three times (the initial start, again for the installation, and again for the updates). But it works just fine once it gets everything loaded/updated. On the plus side I watched several videos last night (not while anything was running, of course :))and no freezes, so I guess we're making progress!
