Get a free one.

Only run one Anti-Virus at a time.

Use an AntiVirus Software - Choose only one - More than one will conflict. It is very important that your computer has anti-virus software running to protect against viruses. Update Antivirus prior to manual scans as necessary or as used. Please only choose one, having more than one can cause problems, such as crashes and your computer to slow down.

Hi danomind,

It is important to know the difference between Virus and Spyware as explained below. You need to install both Anti-Spyware software and only one Anti-Virus program to attempt to stop both from entering your system.

Spyware and viruses are both forms of unwanted or malicious software, sometimes called "malware." You need to protect yourself from both.

What's the difference?

Spyware (sometimes called adware) collects information about you without appropriate notice and consent.

• A computer virus spreads software, usually malicious in nature, from computer to computer.

Spyware can get installed on your computer in a number of ways. One way is through a virus. Another way is for it to be secretly downloaded and installed with other software you've chosen to install.

In short, spyware is a specific type of unwanted software that secretly collects your information.

A virus is a specific way software can be secretly distributed, often by e-mail or instant messaging.

Both spyware and viruses can cause damage to your computer or cause you to lose important data. In a previous post above you have been given my Security Tips included in my signature. However you may also like to browse under the heading Learning each day which is a weekly maintenance program to keep your computer running well.

kind regards,

Another good free AV to use as a secondary is ClamWin (no real time function). In several instances, I have had it pick up infections after scanning with my usual battery of programs.

Hi alpinewarrier,
Yes also it's good as a plug in for your UBCD4Win disc...relatively small file size (important on a Live Disc), but easily updatable.

Can I ask why is it important to only run 1 AV program? I've heard that from several sources but I still don't know why, thanks.

Hi Adzer2, Dont worry about the duplicate post I'll remove it for you when I have a minute. If you have more than one Anti Virus application running in memory at the same time, there is a good possibility of conflict between them (both of them trying to access and check files that you open, at the same time. They can also interpret each others actions as those having viral like characterics...if they do this then they can really start to fight...all the while you will probably be sat there with an unresponsive machine..... The golden rule therefore is to have only one "resident" anti virus application running in memory. Its quite often OK to run an "on demand" virus scanner ie an online scan as these can often co-exist peacefully.. Regards paws

I personally prefer using Avast! and Spybot Search & Destroy. The great thing about Avast! is that it's free for personal use. All you have to do is register for a free product key each year.

Is there any particular reason nobody has recommended Microsoft Security Essentials?

No.

MSE is a fine antivirus/antimalware utility that has been steadily receiving positive reviews.
I use it on several machines.
