tech's might have a clue. Its very frustration, not being able to find a solution, more so for
you.
You might want to consider the repair install as a valid option.

This has been a long thread, nice to see you've stuck with it.
Do you perhaps have a Proxy setup for your internet connection? To see, open Control Panel, Internet Options. Click on the Connections tab. Did you previously use VPN for a secure connection to your work site?
Also, I may have missed it but I thought you did not have a XP CD, other than a borrowed one as this was formerly a work computer? Trying an install of any kind with that CD will probably not work as it will ask for a valid key which you don't have.

There is no proxy server selected, its says find settings automatically. The strange thing is that everything was fine before I got the malware and it was removed. The remining issues are:
- AV will not update (you can do it manually by going the site and downloading the files), two AV's, not on together! ,both refuce to update (but spybot will update fine)
Both browsers freeze or crash on a regular basis for no apparent reason, could be minuted after opening one of them up, could be hours …. no real pattern..for example you can be on ebay click to look an an item and firefox will crash..another time you can spend ages on there.
Thanks for the tip on the XP, yes I don't have the disc that was loaded on this machine, only one I have borrowed to try the SFC …

Could you try open FireFox, then do the following;
In the address field, type: About:Crashes
You will now see some numbers / dates, and sent crash reports (if any) Pick the most recently if present.
You will be sent to a page, where your crash report will be processed. This can and probably will take some
time. If lucky, it won't crash on us. If you manage to get a report, please post it here as a attachment.
Next thing, is to run the IPconfig /All command from the command prompt (Provided you can get it to work)
Open your Command prompt (I'm sure you are familiar with this feature, after being exposed to it so many times )
Type:IPconfig /all (Notice the space between g and the slash / , it have to be there)
Copy the info given, and either paste or post attachment here.
