I might be giving up with the host file business, I just do not understand what I am doing and vista isn't helping the matter, then when I try to update (even though I am not even sure if I installed it properly or not -I mean lots of explanations just don't work out for me as they are written on the installation site, making me very confused !-) I get to this message "Regretfully I can no longer accept any more subscribers to the MVPS HOSTS file update mailing list" so, great, I don't understand how to install this thing, or how it works but I can't even update it !!! I can see this is a very simple and clever solution and I definitely would like to understand it better, but the way it's explained and the necessary steps that just won't work the same on my machine, I'm truly at a loss with this host file situation it's on my computer now, but I have no clues if it's done properly or if it'll work as it should or if I can update it or what ?!?!?
There are special instructions for using the hosts file in Vista

here's a link

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hostsvista.htm

follow those instructions and it should install properly….this is the best solution.

The problem may be with the particular site you are visiting…you don't say which site it is, but I'm suspecting some type of torrent site?

Maybe you should give those a miss…I think downloading all those cracks and keygens in the first place is what created this problem….If you don't get rid of those that file infector will keep rearing it's ugly head again forever.

Babs I've done what I can

I'm sorry there is no other solution for you.

oh the site in question is facebook actually, I do not use torrents since I found out about rapidshare and such sites, but would it be the same ? Anyway, yes I know this is the best solution, I'll try to install it as I can, well, I think I did, well, I'm just not sure… Anyhow, CatByte, thank you again greatly for all the help and the time you took for helping me, I really hope I'll manage to fix it now, coz it's starting to really upset me this thing. You guys are doing a great job (even though my particular problems are always unknown here -this is the second time I leave a thread, the first time, on tomcoyote, I just ended up changing the whole op. system to ubuntu because we could never fix my particular problem on windows !-), keep it up !! Thank you
Hi, Yes, Rapid share is the same, anytime you allow file sharing, you take a gamble as you don't know and can't trust the source. Things aren't always what they appear to be, or you could get the proper file / program but it has malicious code embedded in it, that no amount of effort can remove, resulting in a complete reformat…there is some nasty stuff out there. I would consider backing up your important documents / pictures and music often in case it comes down to that. Hopefully the hosts file solution will work for you. At this point I think we have exhausted all avenues and I shall close this thread. CB
well, I must have done something right since I notice a clear improvement in my laptop's speed from reboot, fingers crossed it'll stay like this from now. Thanks again for the enduring and patience, as I said earlier, keep up the brilliant work, most of us really appreciate the awesome work you guys are putting up with and the help you provide. And yes I think it is time to close this annoyingly long thread, annoying in the sense of such a small occurrence taking so much space ! Thank you again for your advices, the HOST file seems to work out fine, even though I'm not too sure how I managed, I'm going right now into your protection section to help this not to happen again, and I'll also keep your advice about torrents/rapidshare stuffs in mind. All the best to you all !
