The computer seems to be flowing a bit faster, well, it's not hugely noticeable, but I feel a bit like it is slightly better/faster, still no popup at this point…
It just came back, stronger as ever, like 10-15 one after the other at the same second kinda thing, this just happened on some streaming site, it already happened 3-4 times, 15 windows appearing nearly at the same time, in less than 5 minutes, nothing happened since, but it's not yet gone… what the hell is this thing ?
Hi,

Combofix wasn't able to find anything malware related, neither was Malwarebytes AntiMAlware.
I think this nuisance is possibly included in one or more of the programs you have installed on your machine.
Sometimes if you are running free versions of a certain program, ads will be bundled with it and will only go away when you purchase the full program.
if you could give me a screen shot of a couple of the ads I might be able to narrow it down as to which is the offending program.
You may have an idea which it may be depending on what programs you are running free versions of.
Please advise which programs are free versions otherwise it will take me some time to research all the programs you have to see which ones come bundled with this pest.

You might also try disabling your add-ons and tool bars one by one to see if one of those is the offender.

i'm sure if we are persistent we will find which one it is.

Any Video Converter 2.5.9
ALZip
ConvertHelper 2.1
Digsby
DVD Shrink 3.2
MediaDirect
neroxml
Real Alternative 1.7.5
Roxio Update Manager
RTC Client API v1.2
Viewpoint Media Player
VLC media player 0.9.4

any of these could be the offender if you are running the free version

There is one other scan we can do to find out if there is a hidden rootkit in your machine causing this.
Please do the following:

Download Rooter.exe to your desktop
  • Then doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt. Post that here

Can you also advise if the pop ups occur both in FireFox and I.E.

Thank-you

CB
Hi LondonBabs,

I have been consulting with my very knowledgeable expert colleagues on this problem.

As well as looking for a hidden rootkit with rooter from my last post, I would also like you to run the following program:

Thank-you for your patience, hopefully we'll get to the bottom of this:

Disable resident protections (Antivirus…); you'll re-enable them after the scan

Download Lop S&D < here

Double-click Lop S&D.exe (remember to right click and run as Administrator)
Choose the language, then choose Option 1 (Search)
Wait till the end of the scan
Post the log which is created: (%SystemDrive%\lopR.txt)

thank-you,

If you could post the log from LopS&D with your Rooter log.
right, ok, fair enough, I attached the screen shot you requested: 📎adserving.jpg now, it only happens on this site you see on the picture, possibly some others I guess too, but I haven't been on them, I surfed quite a while and nothing happened before this site, then as I said, 15 of them in a together-like fashion, now what I did is uninstall every program I found dodgy enough from your list, also since I don't know what you call free version of a program (I usually stay clear of getting trial version and the sort, but I do go with a few freewares), so, what went: Any Video Converter 2.5.9 ConvertHelper 2.1 Digsby DVD Shrink 3.2 Roxio Update Manager For the rest, I think I can trust them since I've had them forever without a problem: i.e. ALZip is a freeware as far as I know and I have been using it for years without a problem, even though it wasn't this version MediaDirect came with the computer pretty free, but what do I know, would they put a free 1 year trial for it ? It's odd you're seeing Nero, I'm supposed to have uninstalled it a while ago, I do not find it however Real Aternative is the same case as ALZip I do not know what is RTC Client API v1.2, but since it is a microsoft software I just wanted to confirm with you it would be safe to uninstall, I do not think I use it, unless it has to do with the MSN or windows live apps. in any case if it is a futile application I wouldn't mind getting rid of it… even if it isn't the source of this particular problem ;) Viewpoint Media Player same story, I am not too sure, does it have to do with powerpoint ? …Actually it doesn't look like, according to my googling here… right, off it goes too, I have no idea what it is, I'll see after if I need it for anything and re-install if necessary, but I don't like the idea of having some applications I didn't hear of before As for VLC… I just don't think it could be any cause to this problem, even though it is the free version I am running, but isn't it a (pretty safe) freeware too ? I also have my doubts on ZoneAlarm firewall, what would be your take on that ? I meant to get a new better firewall anyway, I saw you guys updated the advised list (I haven't been here in a while), I'll try to find the best suited one from that I guess Anyway, let me clean this a bit, reboot and check this particular website again to see if any window will pop I let you know in a bit
Hi LondonBabs,

If you could run the rooter program and the LopS&D…plus we have a few other programs we can try if nothing shows up as well……
just to say, after reboot, startup repair had to come in and I think used system restore, so everything is back I think, must have erased something I shouldn't have, but ok, let me try your suggestions, I'll get back to you asap erh, sorry for my ignorance but how am I supposed to run both those applications ? I thought I'd just have to click on them and they'd start downloading, but they're not link, and obviously I don't know those programs
Sorry, the links are in my previous posts….I'll repost the links here

Download Rooter.exe to your desktop

  • Doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt (Where %systemdrive% is usually C: or the drive that you have installed Windows).
  • Post that in your next reply.

Disable resident protections (Antivirus / security programs) - you'll re-enable them after the scan

Download Lop S&D >>here<<
  • Double-click Lop S&D.exe
  • Choose the language, then choose Option 1 (Search)
  • Wait till the end of the scan
  • Post the log which is created: (%SystemDrive%\lopR.txt)
Hi LondonBabs, sorry for the miscommunication. You have a lot of programs installed, I didn't want to suggest you start uninstalling them, just advise me which programs might be free versions of a paid program so I can start researching which might come bundled with this adware… I'm not familiar with all the programs listed, so I wanted you to advise what versions were on your machine..The microsoft programs will be fine.
Hi LondonBabs

Couple of more suggestions from my colleagues.

It appears one or more of your USB devices may be infected and reinfecting your machine:

Please do the following

Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs from HERE and save it to your desktop.

Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
Reboot your computer when done.
Note:Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder…it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Here is another program to try if the pop ups are still persistent

Please download Navilog1 by IL-MAFIOSO:
http://perso.orange.fr/il.mafioso/Navifix/Navilog1.zip
  • Extract its contents to the desktop.
  • Double click on navilog1.exe to install it on your computer.
  • When the installation is complete, the tool will start automatically.
  • If it doesn't start automatically, please double click on Navilog1 shortcut on your desktop to run it.
  • Press E for English from the language Menu.
  • Type 1 in the next Menu to select Search and press Enter.
  • Wait for the Scan to finish (It may take a reasonable amount of time)
  • Press any key as requested .
  • A new document will be produced: fixnavi.txt.
  • Please copy/paste the contents of this report in your next reply.
The report is also saved in the root of the directory, "%SystemDrive%\fixnavi.txt". (usually C:\fixnavi.txt)
alright, that sounds very likely actually, I know which computer it comes from even, I just didn't pay attention to it because my antivirus is always catching it and erasing it, I didn't think it'd be a problem. But ok, let's get rid of this, I'm still at work now, so I'll do this in a while and will let you know. Again, thank you so much for your help, it is definitely greatly appreciated
Hi LondonBabs,

Please have a read back through my posts as I've asked you to do a lot of processes in order to try and eliminate this pest….
just so you don't miss any steps…
start with this post here http://forums.whatthetech.com/adserving_cp…026#entry546026

Start in this order:

1. Flash Disinfector
2.Rooter
3.LopS&D
4.Navilog

hopefully we'll find it…

If it turns out to be the USB stick reinfecting your machine then we can skip the other steps but that other computer needs to be cleaned.
yea, well, tell me about the other computer, it doesn't even have an antivirus on it yet, then again it's not supposed to go online… and yet, here I am ! Anyway, I just wanted to point out that I had a few crashes with rooter, I tried a few times but to no avail, even though I'm becoming a professionnal of the vista admin rights tricks, this won't do with rooter… I tried not running anything else while scanning, no prog running, antivirus and such disabled, but still, an error message keeps popping up every 5 mins or so and eventually the whole program just crashes… anyway, I'll try again n will let you know soon as I can thanks again
By the way, I just noticed the question about this occuring in both firefox and i.e. (that's starting to be a lot of threads, sorry :) ), but yea, I actually don't use i.e., I try not to use anything branded windows for that matter, save for the platform, for which I don't really have a choice due to some linux-incompatible router hah !

ok, this is getting tricky, not to mention annoying, so, few issues, when I try to download disinfector, I get a warning from my antivir that WORM/Generic.4084 is trying to gain access, I know some programs have codes that look weird to antiviruses and they'll stop it, but since you didn't mention anything about this and seeing the name of this weird file, I thought it better to skip this one before you confirm it is a normal behavior

here are the logs:

I hope this will help
Geesh Babs…I think we know why you might be infected - lesson learned eh!!

Please do the following:

Please run the MGA Diagnostic Tool and post back the report it shall produce:

Download MGADiag to your desktop.
Double-click on MGADiag.exe to launch the program
Click "Continue"
Ensure that the "Windows" tab is selected (it should be by default).
Click the "Copy" button to copy the MGA Diagnostic Report to the Windows clipboard.
Paste the MGA Diagnostic Report back here in your next reply.

Please run the flash disinfector…sorry I should have mentioned your AV would complain about it - it's fine to run.

Post back the MGA log

Thanks
