My XP Pro, SP3 PC is definitely infected with something. Brower redirects, and is blocking all security related sites. Running Norton Anti-Virus with Windows FW. Tried running Norton AV scans, Malwarebytes, Spybot etc..nothing will run in normal mode. Tried to install Trend Micro Security Pro 2009, but it won't install. Tried Safe Mode, still nothing.

I am attaching my HJT logs and looking for any assistance that you may be able to provide!

Thanks so much,
SCLUCAS

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

VERY IMPORTANT !!!
Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please advise.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now
Thanks so much for the quick response. I will take the recommended steps. I did have some success yesterday and wanted to share my results. Whatever Trojan(s) I had, were very persistent. It would not allow me to run any type of Security software, or go to any security sites. The browser was also re-directing all web searches. Tried everything in Normal Mode and Safe Mode. No luck. I installed a trial of Trend Micro Internet Security Pro '09. It required that I uninstall Norton AV and Spybot Search and Destroy. Still no luck. I tried a freeeware program called Remove-It. Was able to run this and it did find a few trojans, and also fixed the problem with the browser re-direct (it was the Host file). I was then able to run a Trend Micro scan, which identified even more trojans which were removed. Lastly, I ran Malwarebytes, found even more issues, but this seemed to clean everything else that was infecting the system. I will now run ATF to see if there is anything else lurking in there. Appreciate the support! -Steve
That's good…ATF is to clean out the temp junk..It's the ComboFix that will hopefully clean out the rest of the infections, so follow through with all the instructions before posting back thanks CB
Thanks again. Ran both ATF and ComboFix. Here is the CF log. I'm noticing 2 strange things: 1) My Host file seems to have a ton of web site entries that I believe the trojan/virus put in there. Not sure if deleting the file and letting XP recreate it on boot, is the way to go. 2) Also, it appears that when I try to access sites like Trend Micro and AdAware, to update definition files, it is not allowing the update because something may be wrong with my User (Admin) permissions. I have checked Windows Users and it does indicate that I am still the Admin on the PC. Could this be something that the attack hosed? If so, any thoughts on how I could rectify? Thanks again! ****************** ComboFix 09-03-26.03 - Steve 2009-03-27 8:58:44.1 - NTFSx86 Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.510.253 [GMT -4:00] Running from: C:\Documents and Settings\[removed]\Desktop\ComboFix.exe * Created a new restore point . Hi, I know your anxious to get your computer clean, (I know I would be too)but please hold off on 'fixing' anything more, till I get a chance to analyze the log. (It may alter the computer's environment and make any fix I come up with useless) I'll do my best to get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks CB
Hi,

Please do the following:

Please re-open HiJackThis and do a scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below. (If still present)

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{AC61D207-DD81-4C91-828C-2800E4933760}: NameServer = 85.255.112.225,85.255.112.199
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.112.225,85.255.112.199
O17 - HKLM\System\CS3\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.112.225,85.255.112.199
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.112.225,85.255.112.199

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.
Close HiJackThis.

Run a scan and save a log file
Post back the fresh HJT log

Please advise how your computer is running now.

(Note: could you please remove the double spacing - some of the ComboFix log got cut off, (but I had the info I needed,) I'd just prefer the single spaced log. Thanks
Thanks again.

1) Ran HJT first. The entries you specified in the previous post, did not appear in the log results.

2) D/L and ran HostXpert 3.7, and restored to Microsoft's Host Files.

3) D/L and ran JavaRa. Removed previous versions, and then D/L and installed current JRE from SUN.

4) Re-ran HJT, and the results are posted below

5) I'll need to test the PC for a bit to see if anything is still suspicious. If you see anything in the logs, please let me know.

I greatly appreciate your support and prompt responses!

-Steve

CatByte, Everything seems to be running smooth, actually quite a bit faster on boot-up, opening apps and the browser! No hiccups yet. Again if you se anything in the recent HJT log, please let me know. Thanks so much for your assistance! -Steve
Hi,

Log looks clean

now we have some housekeeping to do:

First

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will reset your System Restore and clear out the backups and quarantines created during the course of this fix.

If you would like to try one of these free AntiVirus programs, please do so. I can highly recommend any one of them

AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic
AVG Free
AVAST

Select one of these. Download, install, and update definitions.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.
  • Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

  • SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX, it immunizes your PC against them.

  • SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program ( eg : TeaTimer, Windows Defender ) or there will be a conflict.

  • Make Internet Explorer more secure
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    • Click on the Security tab
    • Click Reset all zones to default level
    • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
    • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
    • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

For use with the Firefox browser, I highly recommend these add-ons to keep your PC even more secure.
    • NoScript - for blocking ads and other potential website attacks
    • McAfee SiteAdvisor - this tells you whether the sites you are about to visit are safe or not. A must if you do a lot of Googling
  • Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories. This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.
  • Recovery Console - Recent trends appear to indicate that future infections will include attacks to the boot sector of the computer. The installation of the Recovery Console in the computer will be our only defense against this threat. For more information and steps to install the Recovery Console see This Article. Should you need assistance in installing the Recovery Console, please do not hesitate to ask.
  • Please read the guide by Rorschach112 on how to prevent malware and about safe computing here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.
Thanks again! Very thorough! What I didn't mention earlier is this is a 10-year old PC that has been upgraded as far as it can be (i.e. memory and processor). That said, it works just fine for normal task that don't require heavy processing. I just reinstalled Norton AV Corp. Edition (version 10.x). I've tried other Security Suites, but honestly they slow this PC down way to much. I saw the "free" AV products recommended as well. Should I be OK running what I have, as long as I keep it updated? Just curious. I will also D/L the other suggested utilities. Thanks again, very helpful! -Steve
I always found Norton to be a bit of a resource hog myself - but if it works for you then keep it.

I don't believe that edition comes with a firewall

you may want to install a third party firewall. (Comodo is a good one)

Myself I have: (All free programs )

AVIRA (antivirus)

COMODO (say NO to the toolbar option) (firewall)

WINDOWS DEFENDER (antispyware)

but if you ask 10 different people they will have 10 different recommendations for you.

It's personal choice and what works best for your computer
