Greetings,

I scanned my pc with Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and it found a couple of problems. I attempted to remove the infections by pressing the Remove button in the Anti-malware application. The application reports that the infections were successully cleaned up, but if I reboot and do another scan, then the infections are back.

I could not find any information on these trojans by searching on google. And I searched whatthetech forums as well, to no avail. I am hoping that one of the experts here can help me.

The pc is working fine as far as I can tell.

I have XP SP3. I have the windows firewall turned on. I have the ZoneAlarm firewall software running too. I have McAfee Antivirus. I have Spybot, SpywareBlaster, and Ad-aware installed. And of course I have the previously mentioned Malwarebytes Anti-malware.

Here is my Malwarebytes log:

You will need to disable Spybot's Tea Timer function, if it is running, as it may interfere. - this is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labelled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine fully for the changes to take effect.

How's the computer now?

Thanks
Hello oldman960. Thanks so much for taking the time to help me. I appreciate it.

1. Yes, the MBAM log that I posted earlier did correctly report "no action taken". I had run the MBAM scan and then I allowed MBAM to attempt to fix the problems it identified. It looked like it worked so I shut off the computer. A day or two later I ran MBAM again and it reported that the same problems were back. This time I didn't bother to attempt to fix the problems because I figured that it wouldn't work this time if it hadn't worked the previous time. The log I posted was from the second scan.

2. I disabled tea timer as instructed. I am running version 1.5 of Spybot.

3. I rebooted.

4. I ran HiJackThis as instructed. The ftehe and the rpib thing were NOT present. This kind of surprised me. Because I did not remove them with HJT at any time.

5. Ran OTMoveIt3

6. Ran the MBAM quick scan.

7. The computer seems ok now. But I wonder if I should do a Full scan with MBAM before calling this problem fixed?

Here is my OTMoveIt3 log:

Hi ChampionOfthaca,

You're welcome.

I don't think a full MBAM scan will reveal much more, it's found what it will find all ready. The files are gone or OTMOVEIT3 would have at least found them.

I do see this line in your previous HJT log

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (reboot)] "C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe" /runcleanupscript

So it would appear MBAM got them.

We should do one more scan just to be sure nothing is lurking.

You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions.
  • You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computerr under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Desktop is a good place.
  • Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Please post back with
  • Kaspersky log
  • new HJT log

Thanks
I think things are looking pretty good now. Would you agree? Thanks again for your help.

Hi ChampionOfthaca,

Yep look good. If no other problems we'll clean up.

From your desktop delete
  • any notepads/logs that were created

Open OTMoveIt3 then click the Clean Up button. You may get prompted by your firewall that OTMoveIt wants to contact the internet - allow this. A cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will do some clean up tasks and delete some of the tools you have downloaded plus itself.

You can re-enable Teatimer when you are done.

Keep MBAM updated and use on a regular basis.
