I believe this may be a Win32 Trojan . Please help. It constantly tries to get access back and forth through the internet and redirects to browser to add sites. AVG did not see it until I finally could delete the original and download a new copy. It then found it, removed it, but it was still there. When the Trojan appeared, it disabled the virus protection and the firewall immediately. Please help to remove this nuisance. Thanks

I think I may have fixed it. I got rid of AVG and downloaded Avast and had it do a boot scan before it booted and it found two of them. Deleted both, seems to be good now. No alerts from Zonealarm on its log viewer. Here is a copy of the updated HijackThis after the "possible fix". Can someone please compare to make sure I am clean?

:pullhair: Nope, still there. Thought I found it but it still pops up on the ZoneAlarm Firewall saying: ZoneAlarm has blocked an outgoing communication from your computer to port 80 on a remote computer whose IP address is [removed]. Sorry for the reposting, thought I had fixed it. :smack:
Hello.

Nasty infection you seem to have right now.

[external image: Posted Image]Backdoor Threat

IMPORTANT NOTE: Unfortunatly One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

With Regards,
Extremeboy
I would like to try at least to see if we can fix it. The program did disable the Windows firewall, but as far as I could tell the ZoneAlarm was not and it stopped the illegal activity immediately and the ZoneAlarm showed that it was blocked. I have some important files on that computer, so I guess if I could figure out how to save all of it on a DVD, i could save it. But I will miss all the programs on it. Would I be able to use an OS installation disk to "Fix" instead of afull redo? Also, one of the other home computers is connected via a cable to a router. The computer was not acting wierd, but the router was acting up unitl I unplugged the "infected computer". The third computer is a wireless laptop on a secured network connection into the same router. I would assume because it is a secured connection wirelessly, it was ok. How can I check if the second computer was compromised? It is not acting wierd of showing any signs of trouble. :notworthy:
Hello. A reinstall will not work. You can reinstall first and backup anything but then a format is still needded to clear out the infection. If you want to check the other computers, you will need to start a new thread in this forum. Do you still wish to continue? If you are going/planning to format anyways, then fixing it will not be necessary.. With Regards, Extremeboy

This is rediculous. I will just reformat. I can't believe I was so stupid to not virus scan the file before opening. I learned the hard way! Can I safely save all files and settings on DVD's from the DVD drive without transferring the trojan to the newly reformatted computer? What di I need to do to safely transfer/save all pertinent files onto a DVD? Thanks for all the replies and have a great day!! :notworthy:
Hello.

If you are going to backup and don't want the infection below are some guidelines.

1) Backup all your important data files, pictures, music, work etc… and save it onto an external hard-drive. These files usually include .doc, .txt, .mp3, .jpg etc…
2) Do not backup any executables files or any window files. These include .exe's, .scr, .com, .pif etc… as they may contain traces of malware. Also, .html or .htm files that are webpages should also be avoided.

Note: Some may want to be safe, wondering if their data files are infected or not so to make sure you should scan those files using an anti-virus scanner and an anti-malware/anti-spyware scanner making sure they are free from malware before transferring to the new formatted machine. From what I have seen the results were always CLEAN, meaning they were not infected at all.

Then, you should be fine. Good luck on the format.

Anything else?

You're welcome.

Good luck on the format. Below are some prevention tips and things you should install to prevent future infections. :)
I will close this topic now. Good luck next time!

Install an AntiVirus Software

It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

Some Free Anti-Virus software I recommend are:

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Install a Firewall

I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls

Some Firewall programs I recommend to others are:

Update your Firewall Program - It is imperitive that you update your Firewall at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your firewall then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Preventing Infections in the Future

Please also have a look at the following links, giving some advice and Tips to protect yourself against malware and reduce the potential for re-infection:

  • Avoid gaming sites, underground web pages, pirated software sites, and peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs. They are a security risk which can make your computer susceptible to a smörgåsbord of malware infections, remote attacks, exposure of personal information, and identity theft. Many malicious worms and Trojans spread across P2P file sharing networks, gaming and underground sites. Users visiting such pages may see innocuous-looking banner ads containing code which can trigger pop-up ads and Flash ads that install viruses, Trojans and spyware. Ads are a target for hackers because they offer a stealthy way to distribute malware to a wide range of Internet users.

Disable Autorun on Flash-Drive/Removable Drives

When is AUTORUN.INF really an AUTORUN.INF?

USB worms work by creating a file called AUTORUN.INF on the root of USB drives. These INF files then use Autorun or Autoplay (not the same thing!) to execute themselves either when the stick is inserted, or more commonly, when the user double-clicks on the USB drive icon from My Computer (Windows Explorer)…

Keeping Autorun enabled on USB and other removable drives has become a significant security risk due to the increasing number of malware variants that can infect them and transfer the infection to your computer. Read USB-Based Malware Attacks and Please disable Autorun asap!.

If using Windows Vista, please refer to:
"Disable AutoPlay in Windows Vista"
"Preventing AutoPlay with Local Group Policy Editor or AutoPlay options panel"

Note: When Autorun is disabled, double-clicking a drive which has autorun.inf in its root directory may still activate Autorun so be careful.

Vist the WindowsUpdate Site Regularly

I recommend you regularly visit the Windows Update Site!
  • Lots of Hacking/Trojans use the methods found (plugged by the updates) that have not been stopped by people not updating.
  • Update ALL Critical updates and any other Windows updates for services/programs that you use.
  • If you wish to turn on automatic updates then you will find here is a nice little article about turning on automatic updates.
  • Note that it will download them for you, but you still have to actually click install.

Update Non-Microsoft Programs

It is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

Update all programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs you have installed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:
