Have been having trouble with google redirect for several days now. I didnt realize it was malware until I started searching around today. I think I see the problem but not sure how to fix it. HJT log is attached, appreciate any assistance…

Edit: some additional information: Spybot SD did not find any problems other than some tracking cookies, AVG did not find any problems. After reading some similar posts in this forum I checked a few more things and found that I cannot open a command window and I cannot run regedit.

Hi,

Please download DaonolFix from the link below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
  • Double-click DaonolFix.exe to run it.
  • Select 1. Find Daonol (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter.
  • You will see a lot of files being listed - don't worry, they are just being scanned.
  • A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called DaonolFix.txt).
Note: Do not worry if the tool crashes or doesn't work in any way - it is a work in progress.

Download ComboFix by sUBs from here or here

Note: If you already have a copy of ComboFix on your system it is essential that you delete it before downloading this copy.

**Save it to your desktop**

Please open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component (looks like this: [external image: Posted Image]) -> deselect the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.
When you need to enable the AVG Resident Shield, ( I'll let you know when) just open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component -> select the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. If you are prompted to install the Recovery Console I recommend you go ahead and hit yes.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log

Notes:
  • Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
  • ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
  • Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you - please let me know.
  • ComboFix disconnects your machine from the internet when it runs. This connection should be automatically restored when ComboFix completes its run. If ComboFix runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Thanks.
Thanks for your help. I have downloaded and run the exe files you suggested. In addition to the following logfiles which you requested, I have observed that I can now open a command window, I can now run regedit, and I successfully searched and navigated from google several times without being redirected. Although I did not experience a redirect every time, in the past I was seeing it once per every 2 or 3 times I tried to navigate away from the search page.

Logfiles are copied below. I would be very interested to know where I caught this from, if you can tell. Also, what would you recommend I run to prevent this from happening in the future.

Hi,

Glad to hear things are running better. Not sure where this is coming from at the moment, still trying to find out.

First, I would like a sample of something that was deleted. Please go to this site:
Bleeping Computer Submission

Please paste a link to this topic in the first field. Browse to the following file:
C:\QooBox\Quarantine\c\docume~1\Dave\LOCALS~1\dgfij.ide.vir

Click Send File.

Next, let's get once last opinion to make sure you are clean.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Post that log back here.
I need to see another log from HijackThis.
  • Run Hijackthis.
  • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.

Any other problems with the computer?

Thanks.
I have completed the tasks you requested. Note the following: The file: C:\QooBox\Quarantine\c\docume~1\Dave\LOCALS~1\dgfij.ide.vir did not exist. I Uploaded the file C:\QooBox\Quarantine\c\docume~1\Dave\LOCALS~1\_dgfij_.ide.zip assuming it is the one you wanted. If this is incorrect, let me know and I will be happy to upload a different file. You also asked "Any other problems with the computer?" At this time, my answer is no, nothing that I am noticing. I have not been using this computer very much the last few days for fear of compromising personal info, etc. But I have not noticed any problems since I ran DaonolFix and ComboFix last night. Hi,

Thanks for that file, yeah that was the right one, sorry about giving you wrong name.

Things are looking good. Click Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and click Remove by the following items:
Java™ 6 Update 6
Java™ 6 Update 7

You don't appear to be running any third party Firewall software.

Install a firewall! Without a firewall you are very susceptible to being hacked, and people could gain access to your computer. If you don't have a firewall I strongly recommend you download ONE of the following:
1) Comodo
2) Agnitum
3) Sunbelt/Kerio

If you don't have any more problems or questions, then we can wrap this topic up in the next post.

Thanks.
Old java updates have been removed… I also turned back on my AVG, simply because I started back on the web again and wanted the protection. I'm not running a firewall because I'm behind a router which acts as a hardware firewall. Do you recommend a SW firewall in addition, or is the protection offered from a router/switch sufficient? One last question… Is there any reading or tutorial available on HJT logs that you would reccommend? I would like to better understand how you were able to analyze the log to identify specific problems in case it happens to me or family/friends in the future. Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it. Cheers. -Dave R
Thanks for the tutorial. I had not seen that one. I saw the topic about the classroom earlier. It is something I am interested in, but I'm not sure if I have the time to dedicate to it right now. Feel free to close this topic if you think we are finished. Things seem to be running well on my end. Thanks again for your help.
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
