Hi everybody,
My laptop seems to have a mind of its own. I keep getting 'spybot errors' saying ' some registry entry has been changed' and i should either 'accept' or 'deny the change'. I also get system .dll errrors when I login.
SOmetimes when I am working IE automatically closes all the windows.
The SAS on my system had expired so I had to change the system date so that I could open the log file. It previously wouldn't allow me to save the log file without that.

I am not able to run any scans on the system.

Pleeeeeeeeease help! I remain indebted to the members of this forum ,who in teh past, have helped me with other malware, spyware issues.
I am looking forward to your expert advice and help.

Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome to Posted Image

Please be advised, as I am still in training, all my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advise.
This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.

I am checking over your HJT log now, I will post back shortly with instructions.
Hello mysticgem

SAS on my system had expired

exactly what program are you referring to here

I am not able to run any scans on the system.

can you explain further - have you attempted to run malware removal tools on your own or are you referring to antivirus scanners?

Before we begin, you will need to disable Spybot's Teatimer, as it will interfere with the fix.

To do this can you start Spybot and go to the Mode button and select Advanced. Go to Tools > Resident and uncheck the box next to Tea-Timer.
Make sure that the icon in the system tray is no longer there. If it is, just right click on it and select "Exit".

Do not forget to re-enable teatimer when we are done .
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

Please do the same for Windows Defender.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
  • You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.
Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\).
Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key repeatedly;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual user account.
  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
  • A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

VERY IMPORTANT !!!
Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please advise.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

In your next reply I need

  • SDFix log
  • Combofix log
HI CatByte,
Thanks for your response.SAS- refers to the Statistical Ananlysis Software and it uses the .log files .
I was not able to run any of the system (anti-virus' scans or ' malware' scans previously.

I did everything that you had mentioned.

I had to uninstall AVG antivirus because I was unable to go to the 'resident shield' as the 'control center' in AVG was not opening.
WHen I tried to install COmboFix, it gave me errros that AVG was running but the Control center was just an icon' (the kind of icon you get when somehting has not been installed properly'.Hence I uninstalled AVG antivirus.
. Can you provide me with the link to install AVG antivirus ?

I don't see much difference in the speed .

Can you provide me with the link to install AVG antivirus ?

Two alternative free choices are

Avira AntiVir
or
Avast!

Only choose ONE antivirus
Thanks for your help, CatByte.

The system is still pretty slow especially when I try to open IE it takes a long time to open. It also takes a long time to open any application.
The annoying popups from spyblaster have stopped.

Which Antivirus would you recommend? Avira or Avast?

Hi mysticgem19

Please do the following,

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

DirLook::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nib

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jvxpsqqr.dll

Folder::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nib

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save …

[external image: Posted Image]

* Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
* ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
* When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
* Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

NOTE: CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

NEXT

Download RootRepeal.zip and unzip it to your Desktop.
  • Double click RootRepeal.exe to start the program
  • Click on the Report tab at the bottom of the program window
  • Click the Scan button
  • In the Select Scan dialog, check:
    • Drivers
    • Files
    • Processes
    • SSDT
    • Stealth Objects
    • Hidden Services
  • Click the OK button
  • In the next dialog, select all drives showing
  • Click OK to start the scan

Note: The scan can take some time. DO NOT run any other programs while the scan is running

  • When the scan is complete, the Save Report button will become available
  • Click this and save the report to your Desktop as RootRepeal.txt
If the report is not too long, post the contents of RootRepeal.txt in your next reply. If the report is very long, it will not be complete if you post it, so please attach it to your reply instead.

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to insert the attachment into your post

In your next reply I need

  • Combofix log
  • RootRepeal log
  • Fresh HJT log

Which Antivirus would you recommend? Avira or Avast?

Personally I have Avira and am very happy with it, I know others who swear by Avast. As they are both free and relatively easy to install/uninstall give them each a couple of months trial and see which one suits your needs best.
Thanks CatByte.
Here are the log files

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.
  • Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
  • SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX, it immunizes your PC against them.
  • SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program ( eg : TeaTimer, Windows Defender ) or there will be a conflict.
  • Make Internet Explorer more secure
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    • Click on the Security tab
    • Click Reset all zones to default level
    • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
    • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
    • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.
  • For Firefox I highly recommend these add-ons to keep your PC even more secure.
    • NoScript - for blocking ads and other potential website attacks
    • McAfee SiteAdvisor - this tells you whether the sites you are about to visit are safe or not. A must if you do a lot of Googling
  • Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories. This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.
  • Recovery Console - Recent trends appear to indicate that future infections will include attacks to the boot sector of the computer. The installation of the Recovery Console in the computer will be our only defense against this threat. For more information and steps to install the Recovery Console see This Article. Should you need assistance in installing the Recovery Console, please do not hesitate to ask.
  • Please read the guide by Rorschach112 on how to prevent malware and about safe computing here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.
Thanks CatByte. I appreciate all your help. I did whatever you had asked me to. However, I get teh following : 1. When I login before the Windows screen comes up, there is the DOS kind of screen with the option to choose the kind of OS (Normal and Recovered). (Please note: it doesn't ask me to make a choice but the screen appears) 2. The system is extremely slow. IE takes a long time to open. Should I delete something? 3. Can I go back and change the 'Teatimer' settings in Spyblast?
Yes, go ahead and reset tea timer….

let me look into the DOS screen flash…it may just be because you now have Recovery Console installed (I recommend you leave it there)

Check here for different things you can do to speed up your computer

I'll also look into some specific recommendations for that as well….
Hi Mysticgem19,

To remove the OS option dialogue screen at login do the following:

Press Start> Right click My Computer and select Properties
Select the Advanced Tab
Select the "Startup and Recovery" Settings button
Remove the tick from "time to display list of operating systems"

download this free defragmenting program from Auslogics >>HERE<< and run the downloaded setup file and follow the instructions of the Setup Wizard.

After the installation has finished, the program will be launched automatically or you can find and run it from the Start menu.

This will defragment your hard drive, hopefully resolving your sluggish system issues.

Pleas let me know how you get on.
