A friend asked me to see if I could help her out with a laptop that has been acting crazy. It is a mess, and beyond my ability to fix. I was hoping someone here might be able to help me. I tried running several spyware programs but the computer either won't allow it, or it freezes before it's done.

Here's the hijackthis log - incidently, I had to rename hijack.exe before it would even allow me to run it. Any help would be appreciated greatly. I created the log file, transferred to a thumb drive, and am uploading the log from another computer.

Hi , welcome to the forum.

Please be advised, as I'm still in training, all my replies will have to be approved by a teacher or expert before I can post them. This may cause some delays, but I will do my best to keep them as short as possible.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
I will post back soon with additional instructions.

Thanks
Hi HelplessInSeattle,

Download and save to your desktop. If you unable to download the programs, please download them to the computer you are now using and transfer them to the infected computer's desktop. Then follow the rest of the instructions for installing and running them.

Next, Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Note your computer may boot a little slower the first couple of times.

Next double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Please post the malwarebytes log in your next reply along with a new HJT (hijackthis) log.

Thanks
Thank you for the help!

I downloaded both ATF-Cleaner and mbam-setup to my thumb drive and transferred them to the desktop of the laptop that is infected. ATF-Cleaner ran fine, and I did as instructed.

Upon dbl-clicking mbam-setup, however, I got nothing. Whatever's on the laptop won't allow the install. The hourglass begins at dbl-click, then goes away and nothing happens.

Obviously, I can't supply a log from malwarebytes, but I have included the updated hijackthis log.

Hi HelplessInSeattle,

We'll see if we can get it with this tool. Make sure to follow the downnload insrtuctions and transfer it directly to the desktop.

It is vitally important that combofix is renamed before it is even started to download

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    -Tools->Options->Main tab
-Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

[external image: Posted Image]

[external image: Posted Image]

  • It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  • Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix

———————————————————–

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    ———————————————————–

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please post the combofix log and a new HJT (hijackthis) log in your next reply.

Thanks
Hello again,

First, thank you again for taking the time to help me. I truly am grateful to you.

For the most part, everything seemed to go well when I did as instructed above.

I downloaded ComboFix from the link on the left in your post to another computer. When I saved it, I saved it as Combo-Fix as instructed, then cut/pasted to my thumb drive and cut/pasted it onto the desktop of the infected computer. When I dbl clicked it, I was told it was corrupted and I needed to d/l again, so I went through the same process again, only this time I downloaded from the link on the right in your post.

I also downloaded the WinXP Recovery Console and saved it to the thumb drive, in case the infected laptop wouldn't connect to Microsoft to retrieve it. Sure enough, upon the initial install of Combo-Fix, the infected computer gave me the message that I wasn't connected to the Internet, (I was), so I couldn't get it.

I cut/pasted the WinXP Recovery Console program from the thumb drive to the desktop of the infected computer, then dragged it over to the Combo-Fix icon, and it installed that way.

I am now able to get to www.whatthetech.com on the infected computer, but for some reason, I still have to go into IE's Internet Options/Advanced to put a check mark in 'show pictures' under Multimedia. I also tried to download the update for AVG, but wasn't able to do so.

Below, please find the logs from Hijackthis and Combo-Fix. I'll be waiting for your next post,, hopefully telling me we're on the downhill slope! Again….THANK YOU.

Hi HelplessInSeattle,

It is definatley looking better, but some work left to do. These steps may look like a lot, but they are short and quick. BTW, good job.

Open HJT, run a system scan only, check mark these lines if present

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - Cmdmapping - (no file) (HKCU)

Close all other browsers/windows, click fix checked, close HJT

We will be using Combofix again.

Please follow all previous instructions regarding security programs.

Open a new Notepad session
  • Click the Start button, click run
  • in the run box type notepad
  • click ok
  • In the notepad, Click "Format" and be certain that Word Wrap is not checked.
  • Copy and paste all the text in the code box below into the Notepad. Do Not copy the word CODE

File::
c:\windows\p2hhr.bat
C:\sqmnoopt19.sqm
C:\sqmdata19.sqm
c:\sal.xls.exe

Registry::
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{f070e5da-5feb-11dc-8bc4-001636314ad4}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\ControlSet001\Services\TDSSserv.sys]

Driver::
pciinfo

In the notepad
  • Click File, Save as…, and set the Save in to your Desktop
  • In the filename box, type (including quotation marks) as the filename: "CFScript.txt"
  • Click save
Using your mouse left button, drag the new file CFscript.txt and drop it on the ComboFix.exe icon as shown below.

This will start ComboFix again.Close all browser/windows first.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Please save the log in a convenient place such as your desktop so you can post it when you have completed the rest.

Next
Download

Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder…it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Download the HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager.
  • Unzip HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager
  • Run HostsXpert 4.2 - Hosts File Manager from its new home
  • Click on "File Handling".
  • Click on "Restore MS Hosts File".
  • Click OK on the Confirmation box.
  • Click on "Make Read Only?"
  • Click the X to exit the program.
  • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

Finally, I'd like you to try to install and run MBAM (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware) using the instructions posted earlier.

Please post the combofix log, the MBAM log and a new HJT log in your next reply.

Let me know of any lingering symptoms.

Thanks
Okay…all tasks have been performed. Please find all 3 logs below.
I'll wait to hear back from you before I release the laptop back to my friend.
Again….thank you very much!

Hi HelplessInSeattle,

Looks good so far. One more scan to do, just to be sure.

First we'll get the java updated.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Scroll down to "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11
  • Click the download button on the right.
If Information Bar pop-ups up, right-click on it and say it's OK to display the blocked content.
  • Select the platform (Windows, in your case), mutli language.
  • Accept the license agreement, click continue.
You do not have to install the Java Web Start ActiveX Control
  • Scroll down and click on Windows Offline Installation,
  • Save the file jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe to your desktop;
Do not select Run . Do not install it yet.

When the download is complete, close your browser.

Open Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs:
  • Uninstall the old versions of Sun Java, Java JRE, or similar.
  • Do not uninstall Java TM 6 Update 11 if found! :yeah:
Reboot your computer.

  • Double-click on the saved file to install the update.
  • Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET:
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner

(Note: You must use Internet Explorer for this scan.)

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is Checked.
  • Click Scan.
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. We will need this later.
Please post back with the ESET log and a new HJT log.

Extra instructions
Since you used a thumbdrive to transfer files between the infected computer and yours, I strongly suggest you use Flash Disinfector on your computer and removal drives. I also recommend that you download, run and post the RSIT logs from your computer just to be sure you didn't pick anything up. These would be best in a new topic.

Download and save to your desktop, RSIT by random/random
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (will be maximized) and info.txt (will be minimized)
Note: These logs will open in notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.

_______________

How the infected computer?

Thanks.
Okay, here are the two logs requested as a result of your last instructions, and again, thank you:

Hi HelplessInSeattle,

You are more than welcome. ESET doesn't show anything other than Combofix's quaratined files. We'll take care of those directly.

From your desktop, please delete any notepads/logs that we may have created. If you downloaded RSIT to this machine. please delete it from the desktop also.

Next, click the Start button, click Run. Copy and paste the following line into the run box and click OK
Combofix /u

ESET online scan can be uninstalled via add/remove programs if you wish.

Flash_Disinfector can be kept and used on any new thumbdrives added to this system. I would also recommend keeping ATF and MBAM. MBAM is a very good on demand scanner to have on hand.

Now that your system has been cleaned, we'll remove all old infected System Restore points.

You must be logged on to an administrator account
  • Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.
  • Click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  • In the text box labeled Restore Point Description, type a name for this restore point
  • click create
* Remove old restore points

  • Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - system tools.
  • Launch the Disk Cleanup tool and let it run.
  • When it finishes a box with tabs will appear, select the more options tab.
  • On this tab you will find a section for System Restore.
  • If you press the Clean Up button for that section, Windows will delete all restore points except for the most recent one.
Some Recommendations and prevention tips

You should also use Spyware Blaster to help immunize your computer.

- SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

OR

A guide to understanding and using the hosts file.

Learn how your Hosts file can protect you and how you can protect it.
Besides the Hosts file information, there are links to a very good updated hosts file, a host file manager. and some programs that can protect your hosts file.
HOSTS

Please read the info on disabling the DNS Client before installing a custom hosts file.

* If you are behind a router Windows firewall should be fine. Otherwise a 3rd party firewall with outbound monitoring is recommended.

Click FIREWALL for tips, reviews and links to good, free and paid for firewalls. (Note: Zone Alarm is becoming bloatware)

-Secure your Internet Explorer

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

- Ensure that Automatic Update is turned on so you get all the latest patches.
Click start, control panel, click Security Center.

- Keep your antivirus program updated, as well as any other security programs you have.

Take care
Hello again and thanx again. I did all that you instructed, and everything is done, except that when I ran ComboFix /u I got the following error message: "You cannot rename ComboFix as Combo-~1. Please use another name, preferably made up of alphanumerical character." Also, I still have a folder called Qoobox in the C directory, and a text file called ComboFix in the C directory. The computer seems to be running much better. It's so much slower than mine, but it's not dragging nearly as slowly as it was before! Thank you!
Hi HelplessInSeattle, That command usually will remove combofix and it's related folders. Please delete combo-fix.exe from the desktop and the 2 folders from C:\ Qoobox ComboFix They are Combofix's quarantine and logs. Have your friend test drive the computer. She would be the best judge of it's normal speed. Let me know how it goes. Thanks
I deleted the folders/files specified. My apologies for making mention of the speed of the once infected laptop in my previous post. That comment was purely a comparison of my own laptop and the other. The (used to be) infected laptop is actually my daughter's laptop, not "a friend's" laptop, so I know it well, and it's running great. Again, thank you for you help. All is well, and it looks like this thread can be closed. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Hi HelplessInSeattle, Merry Christmas to you too. No apology necessary. :) One last thing, empty the recycle bin if you haven't done so. My bad. Take care
