Hardware
computer retsrating constantly

I've been having restart issues for some time now but I've been unable to figure out what was wrong. I've tried swaping out ram, endless fiddling with drivers and bios settings, etc. Finally it occured to me that 75c sounded pretty dayam hot for a cpu. My fan says it is running at around 5,000 RPM though, so I simply assumed that was how hot CPUs are. Now that I've poked around on the internet a little bit, that doesn't seem to be the case.
I restart mostly when I'm doing cpu intensive things- Loading into video games, loading into windows, and playing video games. Very rarely does it restart when I simply idle, chat, or surf the net. It does restart occasionally when doing easy stuff, but only occasionally. When I'm playing games it is VERY spikey, it will restart 10 times in 20 minutes and then be fine for 4 hours.. and then restart 10 more times over the next 30 minutes.
It 'seems' like when I turn down video settings I restart less, which originally made me think it was a video card or memory issue but now leads me to believe it is the lesser stress on the CPU that is important.
Anyone have any suggestions on how I can cool my CPU? I don't 'think' I'm overclocking, but if someone could tell me how to check I would be glad to. I clean my CPU of dust as best I can, but I can't really see deep into there so there might be some dust I can't see clogged in- I don't know how to release the cpu and am really worried about hurting it somehow.
i have an athlon xp 3200 proc

Hi erjar281
That's about sums it up, considering that 65c is the "Red Zone" for even
newer AMD cpu's.
A couple of avenues here, all useful in your situation I would think.
1. Consider adding more fans to the casing, they are inexpensive, and really makes a difference.
2. Consider applying new thermal paste on the CPU. It can be done by yourself, but if uncomfortable
with it, maybe haul the casing to a local PC-shop, and have them do it.
3. Fans do wear out. So maybe it is time to replace the CPU fan (?)
4. Depending on your budget, and how much you wanna spend on it, a non-stock cooling solution
could be a consideration worth. Maybe ask the PC-shop if they got a second-hand, if the computer
is of age, and if budget is a concern.
Its important that you limit your use of the computer, until the heat problem is
solved. Extreme heating in the casing and CPU creates all sorts of overloads
on other components as well. Which will eventually lead to other hardware failures.
5000 RPM's for a fan is extreme, my fastest fan goes with 2500 RPM's for
comparision. CPU's bursting into flames have been reported, so it is of extreme
importance, that you lower the temperature. Altho, bursting into flames is very rare,
it is still something to have in mind. "It always happens to the neighboor" until it hit
one self.
If you have to use the computer, you could benefit of removing the case sides, and
have a cooling fan blow directly into it. This solution isn't optimal, and shouldn't be
done if you have loose animals in the house with access to the computer room. We
don't wanna accidently harm your animal! This goes for any small kids as well of course.
This solution is obviously only momentarily, until you get the above done / looked into.
Consider the placement of your computer as well. The rear, and sides in case of side
vents, should be clear and not to close to walls. The rear exhaust from the PSU most
be unobstructed!
Whatever the solution, keep us posted
Regards

okay well i applied some new thermal paste and have fixed the heat problem it hangs around 105f-116f umm as far as the restarts go it seems to be very spotty at the moment seems almost random like i said i have the problem every 4 hours or so =/ it seems like if my computer has to "think" to hard it resets. it's no longer over heating

Hi erjar281
Well, at least we got the heat eliminated as cause
What exactly is wrong, could be many things, hardware / software,
BIOS, chipset, or any combination there of. So I think it is time, we
get a overview of your machine, in order to maybe be able to spot
something out of the ordinary.
Please Run the PCPitstop Full Tests, here:
http://www.pcpitstop.com
Note: Vista users with UAC must first Right-click IE - Select "Run as Administrator"
Register and create a password
Accept the ActiveX component to allow your machine to run the Full Tests
Registering and accepting the ActiveX are both SAFE and FREE.
Full Tests is the first item in the left hand column of that page.
The Full Tests take less than 5 minutes for most machines.
Once you have your Results, please post the TechExpress Link back here into this thread for review.
TechExpress is the last item on the list in the yellow box in upper right area of any Results page.
Post the entire URL link information back here into this Forum thread.
Note: Vista users, please close your instance of IE "Rrunning as Administrator" after you are finished reviewing your Results.
Caution: During the testing of Video Adapter, a variety of patterns, shapes, colors and text are “flashed” onto the users monitor screen. In the many thousands of daily uses of the PCPitstop Full Tests over several years, two individuals who suffer epilepsy experienced discomfort and temporary dizziness when viewing the flashing patterns.
If you know that you are susceptible to photo driven seizure, please look away from your screen during the Video Adapter testing sequence.
Note: The PCPitstop Full Tests Results is a free service, but is supported by various paid product advertisements for utilities that "could" remedy the OP's problem.
Since WTT is a "free-help" forum, we do not recommend or endorse purchase of automated utilities, and will assist you in manually correcting any problems and settings necessary to optimize your machine's performance. Ask your questions here. We'll help you walk through any necessary steps.
Eventviewer may also shed some light on the situation:
To discover the type of Errors the machine has encountered recently, use Event Viewer.

To discover the type of Errors the machine has encountered recently, use Event Viewer.
- Go to Start - Run, type eventvwr.msc, then Press Enter.
- When the Event Viewer opens, there will be two panes.
The left pane is for event categories (Application, Security, and System).
The right pane is for event messages (Information, Warning, and Error). (We want to find errors.) - Left-click the Application category in the left pane and check for any error messages in the right pane.
You want to find the one(s) that occurred at the same time your system encountered the problem you have posted about. - Repeat the previous step for each category, or until you find an appropriate error to investigate.
- Double-click the error message to bring up the information.
- Click the third button on the right side of the information window (copies information)

Hi erjar281
I suggest you start of with the recommended fixes.
But I have something to add to that. Seeing that you have a file fragmentation
of 45% (It is recommendable to defrag at 10%) I suggest you do these two
things first:
Disk-cleanup to remove old files not needed. This will help keep the defrag time down,
as there are no need to defrag obsolete files.
Then you should defrag your drives. This will restore speed to your computer and free up space.
Either use windows own native tool for this:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848
or download one of these defrag programs:
JkDefrag
Auslogics Disk Defrag
Once done with that. I suggest you carry on with the rest of the fixes. Then we take it from there.
Altho, the drivers update, can wait a bit, if you have no problems with them at this point.
Pay special attention to windows update. That is way to long, since last updated!
Seeing that you haven't updated for so long, I don't think we can exclude malware having
a finger in this. Just for your consideration.
You should also remove old Java entries. They are a security liability, and is easily infected.
Download JavaRa and run the tool.
JavaRa
Keep us posted.

Hi
Sorry for getting back to you this late. Have had some real-life things to take care off.
I have no idea what you mean by that sentence. Are you telling me that you have tampered with the clock frequenzy
for your CPU in BIOS? If you have trouble explaning in technical terms, then its better you use simple terms instead,
or explain in detail all the details about what you do when the problem occur.
What sort of malware did you find and how did you remove it? More often than not, removing malware with your anti-
malware programs, will only remove the surface problems. Todays threats are more complicated than a single delete
can manage.
So my advice is that you go check for any additional malware in our malware forum, here:

yes i was messing with the clocking freq. can choose 100, 122( or 133 sumtin close), 166 and 200. problem is i KNOW it is a hardware problem cause im getting these artifacts at startup. ( before the windows logo) i tried removing ram but that didnt seem to fix the problem. i was doing some research on my graphics card turns out it should be clocked at about 1.4v is the lowest i can go according to http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=4930 1.4 is too high

Hi again erjar281
Well that certainly explains a bit. For starters, I can't and won't advice regarding overclocking.
Mainly because I don't know enough about it, secondly because overclocking is a "extreme"
for enthusiast's but not needed for generel user's, given todays hardware. If you want to over-
clock your hardware, I suggest you find a reputeable overclock forum. I have always been con-
vinced that it is far more wise to upgrade than to overclock hardware. Several reasons for that.
One being that one voids any warranty on the hardware if it is overclocked, which leads to the
next reason. If the overclocking results in severe hardware failure, rendering it unuseable, one
would have been better off from the start upgrading. The hardware manufacturers have placed
the limits for their hardware for a reason, main reason being stability.

And it is. I can't say that others can't be helpful here with your overclocking.
I was speaking on my own behalf. I sincerely don't know much about over-
clocking, and thus I won't advice on the matter. I wouldn't forgive myself if I
were to give a advice that ruined a piece of hardware that wasn't my own.

You can't re-use old / once-applied Thermal paste.
When first applied, it will seep into minor holes, cracks etc. (Surface never plain) in order
to eliminate air, as air is a poor conductor and to allow a smooth surface to transfer
heat from object A to Object B. Once applied, it will stiffen and remain in that form. Applying
it to a new object, it will lose that contact surface.
Best solution is to buy new. Heres some reading on the matter:http://www.techpowerup.com/printarticle.php?id=134
