It could well be software problem that is non-Malware related. You could try uninstalling an re-installing Internet Explorer. It will show up in your Add/Remove Programs list as this: Windows Internet Explorer 7
If that doesn't help, post a new DDS log for one last check and then I may well have to refer you to our wonderful Tech Team for some software troubleshooting.
This is going to sound like a really stupid question, I'm sure, but isn't IE what allows me to access sites like this, or even to go to the one you've mentioned? Are there any precautions I need to take? Please remember, I basically only know how to drive the "car", not repair it
Heh, I guess I've been using Firefox for so long that I forget that other people only have IE.
Well, you can download the installer for Internet Explorer first, and then uninstall and reinstall it. Nothing else really needs to be done. When uninstalling and re-installing its just a case of following the prompts (if any).
Thanks- I'll do that when I get home from work. Things like that really make me nervous, because I don't have a clue what I'm doing, and if there's a way to muck it up, I'll find it, lol!
I think I did a boo-boo. When I installed IE7, didn't even think about it, I saved it to my desktop. I ran it from there, checked in Add/Remove programs, and only one IE7 is listed.(Told you I didn't know what I was doing!)
Now, how do I move it from my desktop to where it belongs, and should I still remove the IE7 listed there? Or should I remove the new one, and start over . Don't you just love working with people like me?
The steps I am looking for are: Download the Installer but don't run it.
Uninstall all current versions of Internet Explorer (via Add/Remoe programs).
Run Installer to install a fresh version.
Heh, believe me, I've had to work with a lot worse than you, you're no problem at all
Thanks for putting up with me! Ok, I did the download, went into change/remove, and it won't let me remove IE7. No change/remove button when I highlight it. I checked(just checked) in the the remove windows compontents section, but the only IE listed there says it takes up 0% space, so I didn't think that was it. What's next?
Apologies, I wasn't aware that if you have Service Pack 3 then you cannot uninstall Internet Explorer 7.
Apparently though, you can do the equivalent or a "re-install" like this:
Start Internet Explorer 7.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
On the Advanced tab, click Reset.
In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset to confirm.
Give that a go and see if that has any effect. Sorry about all that.
Ok, I've reset it. As I'd said before, the problems don't crop up all the time, but if it does, I'll let you know .
Now- at the top of every screen, I have a bar that says: *Intranet settings are now turned off by default. Intranet settings are less secure than Internet setting. Click for options.* I've tried getting rid of the bar, but it pops up with every new page. Also, should I try to put back my google toolbar, as well as the AVG toolbar? The second one was handy for visiting websites. And if I can put them back, how do I do it? Short of downloading the whole thing again, I mean?
You can manage your add-ons by going here: Tools >> Internet Options >> Programs >> Manage Add-Ons.
From there, you should be able to enable any add-ons you want to get back.
As for the "intranet settings" message… In the Internet Options window click Security and then Local Intranet. Click the Sites button and check if Automatically detect local intranet settings is checked. If not, check it and see if that helps.
Glad to hear things are running better. If you do get problems again, either post a new topic or give me a PM and I will re-open this one. Just a few things to do to wrap this up.
You can now delete any tools I had you download and use, unless you wish to keep them.
Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
If necessary UncheckHide file extensions for known file types.
Click OK
Now that your system appears to be clean, there's just a few steps I'd like you to take to prevent any future infections.
System restore:
We will now clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
Select the More options tab
Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.
Make sure you do this now, as your System Restore currently may have infected files in it.
Keeping your Windows up-to-date is crucial to your computer's security. Please go to the Windows Update Site (using Internet Explorer) and download and install all critical updates on a regular basis.
You don't appear to be running any third party Firewall software.
Install a firewall! Without a firewall you are very susceptible to being hacked, and people could gain access to your computer. If you don't have a firewall I strongly recommend you download ONE of the following: 1)Comodo 2)Agnitum 3)Sunbelt/Kerio
Use Mozilla Firefox or Opera as your internet browser.
These are more secure than Internet Explorer and can be downloaded for free from here: Download Mozilla FireFox Download Opera
Make sure you update your Anti-Virus software regularly, new viruses are being developed all the time.
Some more programs that it would be useful to have [OPTIONAL but RECOMMENDED]:
Download Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5 from here Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
SpywareBlaster is another real-time scanner that prevents most spyware from even being installed.
Freely available: Download SpywareBlaster
Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
Also, please read this great article by Tony Klein: So How Did I Get Infected In First Place
Glad we could be of assistance.
Please reply to this thread once more if you are satisfied so that we can mark the problem as resolved.
Did the system restore, but when I typed in "cleanmgr", I have no *more options* tab. Just "ok" "cancel" and "browse". I tried going through browse, couldn't find what you were refering to. Are you talking about a disk cleanup? Because that's what it tried to do when I tried clicking "ok".
Sorry, looks like there's a line missing from my instructions. After typing cleanmgr and hitting Enter, you need to hit OK on your drive (usually C:\). At this point (this is where you were), your have a "Disk CleanUp" tab and you *should* have a "More Options" tab here.
