Hello again! I'm back for more help.I'm getting multiple uncontrolled tabs again that will not close, having windows open when I'm away, or at night, I updated adaware free to adaware free anniversary edition, which no longer seems to catch anything. Malwarebytes antimalware finds nothing, nor has AVG free, both updated regularly. Here's the malwarebytes scan. Thanks in advance! Hi, and Welcome to WhatTheTech :)

Apologies in the delay in a response. We are overwhelmed with logs at the moment and there aren't enough helpers to go around. If you still require help, please do the following:

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done two logs should open:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scrolling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
Please describe how your computer is behaving at the moment, listing any symptoms and problems that you are experiencing.

Thanks.
Thank you so much! The problems I've been havng are windows opening when no one is on the computer(happened twice), multiple pages opening across the screen when I try to close the window. I have to reboot to stop it. Pages taking so long to load I'm either getting time out errors, or I'll get "Internet cannot display the page". With the last one, when I refresh, the page immediately pops up. I've defragged very recently, and run both malware and anti-viral scans, and nothing is ever found. Anyway, here they are, I hope I did it right! Hi,

It looks like your first log (DDS.txt) got cut-off. Please run DDS again and post the entire contents of DDS.txt (I don't need to see the second log again).

Thanks.
Oops! Sorry about that. I guess I missed the tail end in copying it. One more glitch in the machine, as it were. I got up this morning to find out the computer had rebooted itself in the night. And no, nothing was scheduled to run. Anyway- amended log:

Hi,

Are these poups/tabs happening in Internet Explorer?

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any
"<— ROOKIT" entries unless advised!

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click NO
  • In the right panel, you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked … leave everything checked and ensure the Show all box is un-checked.
  • Now click the Scan button.
Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
Post the contents of GMER.txt in your next reply.

Thanks.

Hi,

Your logs are looking pretty clean still.

Can you confirm that this is Internet Explorer that you are getting this behaviour with?

If so, try clicking Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> Internet Explorer (No add-ons) and see if you get problems with that as well.

Thanks.
I have hotmail, with an icon for easier access. I usually go through that. I'm assuming it's IE7 as well, since that's what I have. I tried what you suggested, but no display for Internet Explorer there. The menu that showed from system tools was this: Activate Windows Back up Character Map Disk Clean up Disk Deframentation Files and Settings Transfer Wizard Scheduled Tasks System Information System Restore If there's not some sort of Trojan, I really don't know what's happening! I'm still getting the multiple tabs, where I have to reboot to clear it. Haven't had another window pop open for a couple days, though it doesn't happen that often. Same with the restarts.
Hi,

OK, let's get IE's safe mode another way. Click Start >> Run and copy and paste the following into the "Run" box:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -extoff
and then hit Enter.

Is there anything in these tabs/windows that popup, or are they empty? What kind of stuff is in them (if any)?

Let's get another opinion from an online scanner.

Please run this online scan, using Internet Explorer with Administrator priviledges (Vista users right-click and select Run As Administrator…):

Panda Activescan
  • Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan now button
  • When prompted to install ActiveX control click Install
  • On the update page, click on the security warning at the top of the page and select "Run ActiveX control…"
  • Panda should now start scanning your system.
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the Export To…(with a little notepad icon) button, then Save the report to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report.

Thanks.
I can use IE, that's not a problem. When I get the multiple pages, some of them will have the site I've closed(doesn't seem to matter the site), and some of them will be blank. Usually the first 4-5 are the site I was on, the next however many(I let it go one time, it went for 25 tabs) are all blank. Still getting time out errors also, frequently between pages on the same site(again, doesn't matter what site). Anyway, here's the last scan: ;******************************************************************************* ********************************************************************************* ******************* ANALYSIS: 2009-02-26 14:36:53 PROTECTIONS: 1 MALWARE: 7 SUSPECTS: 1 ;******************************************************************************* ********************************************************************************* ******************* PROTECTIONS Description Version Active Updated ;=============================================================================== ================================================================================= =================== AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.0 Yes Yes ;=============================================================================== ================================================================================= =================== MALWARE Id Description Type Active Severity Disinfectable Disinfected Location ;=============================================================================== ================================================================================= =================== 00029426 adware/sbsoft Adware No 0 Yes No c:\windows\rdt.ini 00139061 Cookie/Doubleclick TrackingCookie No 0 Yes No C:\Documents and Settings\sherrylynne\Cookies\sherrylynne@doubleclick[1].txt 00139064 Cookie/Atlas DMT TrackingCookie No 0 Yes No C:\Documents and Settings\sherrylynne\Cookies\sherrylynne@atdmt[2].txt 00145738 Cookie/Mediaplex TrackingCookie No 0 Yes No C:\Documents and Settings\sherrylynne\Cookies\sherrylynne@mediaplex[1].txt 00170304 Cookie/WebtrendsLive TrackingCookie No 0 Yes No C:\Documents and Settings\sherrylynne\Cookies\[removed][1].txt 00173520 Cookie/Bluestreak TrackingCookie No 0 Yes No C:\Documents and Settings\sherrylynne\Cookies\sherrylynne@bluestreak[1].txt 00262033 adware/emediacodec Adware No 0 Yes No HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Code Store Database\Distribution Units\{134F7664-943D-3BB9-65F5-70B91DF46C86} 00262033 adware/emediacodec Adware No 0 Yes No c:\program files\xxxcodec ;=============================================================================== ================================================================================= =================== SUSPECTS Sent Location nr ;=============================================================================== ================================================================================= =================== No C:\Program Files\shaw\bin\Toolbar\ShawToolbar.exe nr ;=============================================================================== ================================================================================= =================== VULNERABILITIES Id Severity Description nr ;=============================================================================== ================================================================================= =================== ;=============================================================================== ================================================================================= ===================
Hi,

I know IE works, I just wanted to find out if you still get the problems in IE's safe-mode. If you didn't, then we could narrow the problem down to being one of IE's add-ons/plugins.

Please download HijackThis version 2.0.2 and save the file to your desktop. Double click the Hijackthis icon on your desktop and hit Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile and then copy and paste the log into a new reply, using the Add Reply button.

Thanks.
I already had Hijack This downloaded from a couple of months ago. Is this ok? I don't know if it updates itself or not! If it's not good, let me know. Otherwise, here's the log.

Hi,

That HijackThis is fine, thanks.

Has http:\\Start.shaw.ca been set by you?

Open HijackThis. Hit Do A System Scan Only. Place a check next to the following items (if present):
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Close all browsers and windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart Internet Explorer after this and let me know if there's any change.

Thanks.
Hi, Shaw is my homepage. It's the cable company we get internet through. Not sure what the others are you've listed(can you tell I don't have a clue about computers :D) , but while I visit realarcade once in a while, I've not downloaded a game. Unless that's there because I do play online once in a while. The only games I've got on the computer are 2 from popcap. Anyway- did everything you listed, and I just got the multiple tabs again! I really don't know what's going on. If it's not some kind of malware, could a software glitch do this? On a more positive note- I've still not had any windows open when I'm gone, nor any unexplained restarts! Just those blasted multiple tabs when I try to close a window. And not all the time. It's unpredictable as to when it'll happen. Have I said thank you lately
