Just a quick question about the HJT log.

I do not use or want the Yahoo search bar and deleted it long ago but see there are still remnants of it. I also see a Yahoo start page.

From my HJT log, can I safely remove the following 5 lines?
Any other lines not needed?

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaul…rch/search.html

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com/

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

Also, from my first visit to this forum, can I also delete the following lines?

O16 - DPF: {04E214E5-63AF-4236-83C6-A7ADCBF9BD02} - http://housecall60.trendmicro.com/housecall/xscan60.cab

O16 - DPF: {0E5F0222-96B9-11D3-8997-00104BD12D94} (PCPitstop Utility) - http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/PCPitStop.CAB
Hi Miffed,

Yes you can fix those lines with HJT. Do that then go through this post.

Once you are finished with your computer and everything seems to be good, then post the log for your laptop. We'll continue in this thread. :)

We'll clean up now.

From your desktop, please delete
  • Attach.tx
  • DDS.txt
And any notepads/logs that may have been created.

Open OTMOVEIT3 then click the Clean Up button. You may get prompted by your firewall that OTMoveIt wants to contact the internet - allow this. A cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will do some clean up tasks and delete some of the tools you have downloaded plus itself.

I suggest you keep ATF and use it from time to time to clean out the nooks and crannies malware like to hide in.

*We'll reset your restore points

Create a new restore point

You must be logged on to an administrator account
  • Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.
  • Click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  • In the text box labeled Restore Point Description, type a name for this restore point
  • click create
* Remove old restore points

  • Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - system tools.
  • Launch the Disk Cleanup tool and let it run.
  • When it finishes a box with tabs will appear, select the more options tab.
  • On this tab you will find a section for System Restore.
  • If you press the Clean Up button for that section, Windows will delete all restore points except for the most recent one.
Some Recommendations and prevention tips

* If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the cirtical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update

I STRONGLY recommend you use an antispyware program with resident (real time) scanning. I suggest

Winpatrol
OR
Windows Defender

You should also use Spyware Blaster to help immunize your computer.

- SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Besides the Hosts file information, there are links to a very good updated hosts file, a host file manager. and some programs that can protect your hosts file.
HOSTS

Please read the info on disabling the DNS Client before installing a custom hosts file.

* If you are behind a router Windows firewall should be fine. Otherwise a 3rd party firewall with outbound monitoring is recommended.

Click FIREWALL for tips, reviews and links to good, free and paid for firewalls. (Note: Zone Alarm is becoming bloatware)

-Secure your Internet Explorer

  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

All dusting and cleaning done on the desktop and it’s running very well. I appreciate the additional reading too. Thank you VERY much, and to “ShadowGuy” too! :-)

Hi Miffed,

There are some Norton (Symantec) remnants. I take it you are no longer using any Symantec/Norton products?

Please note, as a Vista user, you will need to right click and chose Run as Administrator to run these tools.

Let's start with this

Please disable WINDOWS DEFENDER
  • Click Start > All Programs > Windows Defender or launch from the system tray icon.
  • Click on Tools & Settings > Options.
  • Under Administrator options, clear the Use Windows Defender check box, and then click Save. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation
  • (When we are done, you can re-enable Defender using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Use Windows Defender " check box.)

Open HJT, do a system scan only and checkmark the following lines if present

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4EFB-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

Close all other browsers/windows and click fix checked. Answer Yes if prompted. Close HJT.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your desktop.

right click ATF-Cleaner.exe and chose Run as Administrator to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Note your computer may boot a little slower the first couple of times.

Next
  • Download OTListIt2 to your desktop.
  • Right click on the icon and chose Run as Administrator to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTListIt.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTListIt2.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.
No need for a HTJ log this time.

Thanks
Hi Oldman,

You are correct, I am not using Norton.

I have removed the 4 lines from the HJH log.

Hi Miffed,

The day's been pretty good so far. And yours? Looks good, we'll run MBAM and do an online scan just to be sure.

Open MBAM
  • Click the update tab
  • Click check for updates
  • Once the program has updated, if any are found click on the Scanner tab and select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Kaspersky online scan

Please note
  • As a Vista user you will need to right click your browser icon and chose Run as Adminstrator in order for this scan to work
  • Your browser will have aministrator rights, so Do Not browse anywhere else.
  • Close the browser after the scan has completed and you have saved the results
  • Open your browser the normal way and post the scan results here along with the MBAM log and a new HJT log.
Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Your antivirus program should be disabled during the online scan. This is usually done from it's system tray icon. Please remember to re-enable it after the scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions.
  • You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computerr under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Desktop is a good place.
  • Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Please post
  • MBAM log
  • Kaspersky log
  • HJT log
Thanks
