A couple of new concerns: 1. I received an error message about Mcafee Firewall. I will post the text below. 2. I lost a couple of power point presentations. I was getting an error message that the file extensions were no longer valid. When I restarted the computer I was able to open the presentations!!!?? I am not sure if this has anything to do with what we were doing or not. Computer seems to be running well. It seems to load up a bit slow. Icons take awhile to appear on the desktop. Also when you exit programs it takes a bit for the dektop to "reload". I am sure this has to do with all the new programs I have running. Take into consideration that I am not running a NASA approved computer.

I'm not sure about the slowness. I know that some of the McAfee programs, especially Spam Killer, can slow things down. Hopefully, the Powerpoint problem is a one-off. Let me know if it, or anything similar, happens again. I'd like to play safe and get a SmitfraudFix scan.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press 'Enter'; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a 'RiskTool'; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between 'good' and 'malicious' use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Spam Killer is a new program for me I don't think we ran it on this computer before. I guess McAfee now makes it part of the package I subscribe to.-

The HijackThis log looks clean but the SmitfraudFix report shows one item.

You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. Please print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an always on connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

Boot to Safe Mode. To do this:

• Restart your computer.
• Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
• Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder on your desktop and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press 'Enter' to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : 'Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?'; answer 'Yes' by typing Y and press 'Enter' in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer 'Yes' by typing Y and press 'Enter'.

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt.

Reboot into Safe Mode (as above).

• Double-click the shortcut on your desktop to run the program.
• Under Main, choose Select All
• Untick Prefetch
• Click Empty Selected
• If you use Firefox browser,
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All
  • Click on Empty Selected
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
• Click Exit to close.
• If you use Opera browser,
  • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All
  • Click on Empty Selected
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
• Click Exit to close.

Close all open windows and then start AVG Anti-Spyware.

• Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
• Click on the Settings tab.
  • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
  • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Reports - Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
  • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
• Click on the Scan tab.
• Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
• Let the program scan your computer.
• When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
  • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
  • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (this must done before saving the report).
  • When Ewido has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
  • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
  • Click the Save Report as button.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
• Right-click the Ewido Tray Icon and select Exit.

Reboot in Normal Mode.

Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter.
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

AVG was clean...no report. I had some problems with the safe mode-it kept freezing up on me, again. It took me awhile to finally run everything in the safe mode. Another concern...sorry. The internet seems to be running fine, I have no ads coming up when I use Google(unlike before). However, after I closed out of the internet and the Tom Coyote site earlier today I was left with "about this" or "about blank", "about"...something .com. in the bottom toolbar tray...it disappeared too quickly but I saw the "about". This was the same thing that would happen when the infection was creating havoc.

The HijackThis log is still not showing any malware. I'm a bit worried about the symptoms you describe. I'm concerned that SmitfraudFix picked up a file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmapi32.exe) on the scan but did not deal with it during the fix. There's obviously something still going on.

Let's delete the file, or confirm that it's not there.

You should have Killbox on your desktop. If not, please download it from here

• Double-click to start the program
• Copy the following: C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmapi32.exe
• Paste this into the text box in Killbox
• Click on the red button with the white 'X' on it (Delete File)
• Click Exit

Killbox will either delete the file, or warn you that it doesn't exist. Please let me know which.

Please run a GMER rootkit scan:
Important: Close all open windows and do not use the computer during the scan.

• Download GMER's application from here.
• Extract the contents of the zip file to your desktop
• Double-click GMER.exe to start the program.
• Do not select the Show all checkbox.
• If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...say Ok.
• If no warning, click the Rootkit tab and then the Scan button.
• When the scan has completed, click the Copy button.
• Paste the results in your next reply.

Killbox said the file does not exist. I could not find the GMER scan! After I hit copy I was told it was copied to my clipboard!!?? I could not find the report anywhere.
