OK, we now know for sure you are using IE8, so we will concentrate on your problems with that only if we can.
This is worth a try:
http://support.micro...oDetectFailOSIEMicrosoft Automated Troubleshooting Services: Internet Explorer freezes or crashes
If the above does not work, manually follow these Microsoft steps from this page:
Microsoft Automated Troubleshooting Services (IE8 Internet Explorer freezes or crashes with Vista OS).
Start from here: http://support.micro...anualDetect2000
If we have no luck with the above, we can move on to other possible causes of your IE8 problem.
Cheers,
Lee

hi lee, did you read the post that mentioned i often get a pop up saying the traybar has stopped working?
also mentioned earlier to day was that some other stuff needs sorting to speed up my system, i cant find the post at the moment though. thanks
With regards to the pop-up message, is it an actual Microsoft error message?
We will leave the 'speeding up' business alone for the moment I think and just concentrate on getting IE8 working properly or this thread is going to become very confusing.
If the auto fix I mentioned did not work and the manual steps are just repeating what we have already covered, there is no point proceeding there. It was worth a try though. What is important is that your IE8 remains add-on free until it is fixed. Any add-on just complicates the situation.
Is your IE8 add-on free with no Google Toolbar at this time?
Cheers,
Lebbell

If you still have Skype installed, could you please remove it:

If skype is not there, well I'm running out of ideas besides re-setting everything back to factory setting after saving your important data to removable media

Cheers,
Lee

here's the instructions pulsebabe for removal of ie 8
http://support.micro...0#stepsforvista
To uninstall Internet Explorer 8, follow these steps:
1. Close all programs.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. Click Uninstall a Program under the Programs category
4. In the Tasks pane, click View installed updates.
5. In the list of installed updates, double-click Windows Internet Explorer 8.
Note If Windows Internet Explorer 8 does not appear in the list of installed updates, try the alternative steps for Windows Vista or for Windows Server 2008
6. In the Uninstall an update dialog box, click Yes.
Note If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
7. Follow the instructions to uninstall Internet Explorer 8.
8. When the uninstall program is finished, restart your computer.
After you uninstall Internet Explorer 8, you may notice Application event log errors after each restart. To resolve this problem, delete the following Internet Explorer User Accelerators and Internet Explorer Machine Accelerators registry keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\GPExtensions:
{7B849a69-220F-451E-B3FE-2CB811AF94AE} {CF7639F3-ABA2-41DB-97F2-81E2C5DBFC5D}
lets see how this works for you pulsebabe, we can install ie 8 again later.
also could you run that overdrive test again after removing ie8, i'd like to see if cpu/memory speeds increase.

i think the next step should be to completely remove ie 8 lee and see if that fixes things and then re-installing it later to see if things stay fixed.
Worth a try. However ...
There is definitely an IE8 issue though with the latest Skype (4.1 I think).
If that is still installed, it's removal might solve the IE8 problem, so I'd recommend a Skype removal before an IE7 install.
An earlier version of Skype could then be installed if there is a noticeable IE8 improvement.
Cheers,
Lee
