Pulsebaby,

OK, we now know for sure you are using IE8, so we will concentrate on your problems with that only if we can.

This is worth a try:

Microsoft Automated Troubleshooting Services: Internet Explorer freezes or crashes

http://support.micro...oDetectFailOSIE

If the above does not work, manually follow these Microsoft steps from this page:
Microsoft Automated Troubleshooting Services (IE8 Internet Explorer freezes or crashes with Vista OS).

Start from here: http://support.micro...anualDetect2000

If we have no luck with the above, we can move on to other possible causes of your IE8 problem.

Cheers,
Lee

tried that link it says it encountered a runtime error and cannot continue, i will try the manual version and report back with update just going thru the manual version, its saying to do everything that weve already done, resetting, updating and malicious software ...?

With regards to the pop-up message, is it an actual Microsoft error message?

We will leave the 'speeding up' business alone for the moment I think and just concentrate on getting IE8 working properly or this thread is going to become very confusing.

If the auto fix I mentioned did not work and the manual steps are just repeating what we have already covered, there is no point proceeding there. It was worth a try though. What is important is that your IE8 remains add-on free until it is fixed. Any add-on just complicates the situation.

Is your IE8 add-on free with no Google Toolbar at this time?

Cheers,
Lebbell

No problems with the Pitstop ActiveX being there at the moment. When you say the message box pop-up mentioned your 'traybar' has stopped working. did it use the word TRAYBAR ? There is only a System Tray and a Taskbar. Could you please describe how it has 'stopped working'? Cheers, Lee

I have just noticed in your test results that you have skype toolbars as an IE add-on.

If you still have Skype installed, could you please remove it:

Removal: http://www.gotknowho...toolbar-for-ie8

If skype is not there, well I'm running out of ideas besides re-setting everything back to factory setting after saving your important data to removable media :smack:

Cheers,
Lee

i think the next step should be to completely remove ie 8 lee and see if that fixes things and then re-installing it later to see if things stay fixed.

here's the instructions pulsebabe for removal of ie 8
http://support.micro...0#stepsforvista

To uninstall Internet Explorer 8, follow these steps:

1. Close all programs.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. Click Uninstall a Program under the Programs category
4. In the Tasks pane, click View installed updates.
5. In the list of installed updates, double-click Windows Internet Explorer 8.

Note If Windows Internet Explorer 8 does not appear in the list of installed updates, try the alternative steps for Windows Vista or for Windows Server 2008
6. In the Uninstall an update dialog box, click Yes.

Note If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
7. Follow the instructions to uninstall Internet Explorer 8.
8. When the uninstall program is finished, restart your computer.

After you uninstall Internet Explorer 8, you may notice Application event log errors after each restart. To resolve this problem, delete the following Internet Explorer User Accelerators and Internet Explorer Machine Accelerators registry keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\GPExtensions:

{7B849a69-220F-451E-B3FE-2CB811AF94AE}
{CF7639F3-ABA2-41DB-97F2-81E2C5DBFC5D}

lets see how this works for you pulsebabe, we can install ie 8 again later.
also could you run that overdrive test again after removing ie8, i'd like to see if cpu/memory speeds increase.

Worth a try. However ...

There is definitely an IE8 issue though with the latest Skype (4.1 I think).
If that is still installed, it's removal might solve the IE8 problem, so I'd recommend a Skype removal before an IE7 install.
An earlier version of Skype could then be installed if there is a noticeable IE8 improvement.

Cheers,
Lee

yes noticed in pulsebabes test http://www.pcpitstop...?conid=23983129 that she is still using toolbars and bho's(browser helper objects) where i thought they were all un-installed.

so like lee said don't un-install ie 8 yet pulsebabe, just remove skype, and we'll see if that improves things.

are you asking me to remove skype completely or just its toolbar? again skype has been on my system and in use for months but ive only had the ie problems the past few weeks. if im removing the whole of ie do i have to copy all my stuff onto disk? also last night my task bar at the bottom of the screen, has now moved down the right hand side, it did this one day last week also but when i rebooted it went back to normal, but on logging back on this morning its still on the right. how do i move it back and has something accidentally been pressed to make it move? UPDATE: ive managed to drag it back to the bottom but the quick launch icons have gone large, how do i get these back to the small size? also i have tempro on my system which has now appeared on my taskbar. its a direct link from toshiba with driver and other system updates. there are 11 updates that i can choose which to do, should i do any of them or are they not necessary?

Hi again pulsebabe. Just uninstall the Skype "Toolbar" (toolbar only) Let the helpers here know if that makes a difference. next You may also have Google Toolbar. Also uninstall Google Toolbar. Let the helpers here know if that makes a difference. Before making any other changes, let's get a better overview from PCPitstop OverDrive. In order to receive the full benefit and display the full Results of OverDrive, it is necessary to run Internet Explorer - As Administrator. to do so: Close all instances of Internet Explorer Click on the Vista Start Orb in the lower left corner of your Desktop Select - All Programs Near the Top of the list, you will see Internet Explorer Right-Click on Internet Explorer You will now see a menu that will allow you to "Run as Administrator" This will give your machine full privilege to take advantage of all the features of PCPitstop OverDrive Full Tests. Now navigate to www.pcpitstop.com Select - OverDrive Login Run PCPitstop Overdrive Post the link to your fresh Results. You and the helpers assisting you in this Topic will then be able to view a more full description of your machine's configuration and performance. It is safe to do this, and no personally identifying information will be displayed. The above instructions are utilizing what is known as Vista UAC (User Access Control) By default Vista launches any user account with limited privilege. For ordinary computer use, this is just fine. However, this may in some circumstances prevent certain utilities from fully reporting all the important information that may help detect the machine's configuration and performance. When you are finished with OverDrive and have posted the link to your Results, you can Close IE, and then Open IE normally (without Run as Administrator) to continue your browsing and posting here in your WTT Topic. ____________________________________________ As to the TaskBar... TaskBar can be moved to the Right-Side, Left-Side, Top or Bottom of the screen. I prefer keeping my TaskBar at the bottom of my screen. Others may have different preferences. Moving the TaskBar is accomplished by Left-Clicking on any empty portion of the Taskbar and then dragging to the left, right, top or bottom. Sometimes people may have "accidently" clicked and dragged their Taskbar, and then wonder why it has moved. It can be easily returned to your preferred location by again left-click and drag.
