Browse through your list of Services in MSCONFIG - Services(tab) Make sure that any services related to Audio are not disabled. For instance: Windows Audio -- should have a checkmark, and should show a status of "running". You "could" decide to "Enable All" Services just to make sure. You can always go back and disable the few Services that you may have preferred to have turned off.

also.. for future reference, if i wanted to turn onboard sound on and off in dos.. what would i do?

Go into your BIOS (by tapping F8 on system startup), in the Advanced menu, choose PCI Configuration (last option). Go to Onboard PCI Devices Control. From there you can toggle the Onboard AC97 Audio Controller between Auto and Disabled.

From page 2-22 in the ASUS P4S800-MX Manual.

Did you happen to see what the setting was in the BIOS? Make sure it is set to Auto right now.

Also, try going to Start and click Help and Support. Under Pick a Help Topic, click "Fixing a problem". Click "Game, Sound, and Video Problems" and then "Sound Troubleshooter". Go through the steps thoroughly and see if it finds any problems.

Finally, try Start|Run, type dxdiag and press Enter. On the "Sound" tab, click Test DirectSound. This will run through a number of tests to check the sound output.

Let me know your results.

ok well in bios.. its all good, set to auto.. i went to dxdiag... and it came up with this when i tried testing: DirectMusic test results: Failure at step 6 (Activating the IDirectMusicPort): HRESULT = 0x8878000a (The request failed because DirectSound resources, such as the priority level, were already in use by another caller.) also there were 5 tabs of sound.. sound 1, sound 2, sound 3 etc..

That's great! Could you click the Save All Information button, save the file, and then attach it to this thread (as a file attachment)?

Thanks

I'm overjoyed Lochy! :D It's the moment we've all been waiting for. I'm very glad to have been able to help you. You did great working through this troubleshooting jungle! I have one thing left for you to do (so you can successfully run the SFC utility in the future), if you still have that XP Pro CD:

Follow the instructions in the "Why does this happen?" section of the following link I gave you earlier:
http://www.updatexp....cannow-sfc.html

This way, you can still use the tool without having the XP Pro CD.

Regards,

Ax
