Copy and paste the contents of the quote box below into notepad.

Save it as file name: "fixme.reg" (not including the quotes). Save as file type: *All files* and save it on your Desktop.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile]
@="Shortcut to MS-DOS Program"
"EditFlags"=hex:01,00,00,00
"IsShortcut"=""
"NeverShowExt"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile\shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile\shell\open]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile\shellex]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Offline Files]
@="{750fdf0e-2a26-11d1-a3ea-080036587f03}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile\shellex\DropHandler]
@="{86C86720-42A0-1069-A2E8-08002B30309D}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile\shellex\IconHandler]
@="{00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\PifProps]
@="{86F19A00-42A0-1069-A2E9-08002B30309D}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\ShimLayer Property Page]
@="{513D916F-2A8E-4F51-AEAB-0CBC76FB1AF8}"

Then, locate fixme.reg on your desktop and <double-click> it.

You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".

Answer 'Yes' and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Reboot.

Please try it just as specified.

This will ensure your REG file associations are correct.

Afterwards, post a new startup list log.
:)

Something is still amiss....

File association entry for .PIF:
*Registry key not found*

What you did, didn't seem to "take hold".

Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

regedit /e reg.txt "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\comfile\shell\open\command"
regedit /e reg1.txt "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\batfile\shell\open\command"
regedit /e reg2.txt "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\scrfile\shell\open\command"
regedit /e reg3.txt "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile\shell\open\command"
regedit /e reg4.txt "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command"

Save it to your desktop as ff.bat

Now, <double-click> the ff.bat file on the desktop.

It will create these files on the desktop:

reg.txt
reg1.txt
reg2.txt
reg3.txt
reg4.txt

Open them with Notepad, and paste them into your next post. Then you can delete them from the desktop.
:)

That's what it's supposed to look like.

They all look A-OK!

Go figure....

Let's peek somewhere else...

Run Hijackthis.

Do you get the blank window when booting in "safe" mode?

Micah,

Here's an extract from the second URL in my post #3 of this thread:

"I started the PC in the Safe Mode using 'msconfig'
and enabling the Safe Mode option in the BOOT INI tab. Out of four attempts,
the Blank window appeared every single time!"

I was going through the complete thread of our discussions and saw a few comments
in Dough’s posts that I am not sure were carried out:

Post # 60:

“I'd also like to consider "replacing" the regedit.exe in C:\Windows and the other appropriate locations with original values from the C:\Windows\i386 folder.”

Post # 69:

“I'd also like to see if the .pif is "fixed" with your recommended reg fix from either DougKnox or AVERT.
I wonder if some other process is knocking it back out after multiple reboots cause the routine activation of a "still unknown" suspect application.”

I know we did try to fix the .pif with tools from ‘dougknox’.
I guess this didn’t work out, so will trying out the tools from AVERT help?

Grasping at straws, I guess!! :)

Regards

Jay

Hi Jay,

After you completed the last regfix recommended by Micah, your .pif file associations were as they should be.

Reg3.txt

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

All should therefore be well, with no need to pursue the additional fix via AVERT, unless that item has changed back to the prior "no value entered" or blank / Registry key not found.

If the Registry Values are still "good", then your System File Protection utility may actually "work better" than when you ran SFC during the condition when your regfiles had "Registry key not found.

You could Run System File Checker now, to see if Windows can now better identify any missing or corrupt operating system files. That "should" take care of any need related to my prior post regarding copying Regedit.exe from its original source location in i386.

You can Run System File Checker without harm to your machine or system, so it might help and it won't hurt.

Start - Run - (type)sfc /scannow

It may be a straw, but it won't hurt to grasp for it.

Doug

Hi Dough! Valid points! I did check the registry and found the value for pif file unchanged and exactly as you mentioned. So I did the System File Checker and was surprised to be asked to insert the Installation CD Service Pack 2! I thought that the CD will be necessary only if there is something wrong. But realizing that I cannot move forward without the CD, I inserted it and finished the scan after about 14 minutes. I again checked the registry to see if anythings' changed with the pif file association. Fortunately, nothing has! :) Regards Jay

Ooops! I did the reboot three times now. First time, the Blank Window appeared with the following on the title bar: eight tiny squares followed by pinball.exe The second time, the Blank Window was there but with nothing in it. The third time, there was no Blank Window! I also checked the registry for the File Association Fix and found everything OK there. Regards Jay

Probably not your problem, but I found this "interesting"...

From your startup list log:

Windows Socket 2.0 Non-IFS Service Provider Support Environment: \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\ws2ifsl.sys (system)

Please tell me how to remove it, if it is not required. Also should I start uninstalling programs to see if any of them are the cause for the Blank Window problem? If so which do you advice? Thanks, Micah! :) Regards Jay

After further investigation....

If that software is actually present, this is the removal procedure:* Using Windows Explorer, browse to the folder c:\windows\system32\GDSys
* Locate the file UNWISE.EXE and <double-click> it.
* Follow any prompts.
* Restart your computer
Just because the file is present, doesn't necessarily imply an "infection" (I think)

Service Name: "WS2IFSL"
Display Name: "Windows Socket 2.0 Non-IFS Service Provider Support Environment"
Path to executable: "%System%\drivers\ws2ifsl.sys"
Startup type: "Manual"

Note: This is a legitimate service and is used by LSPs which do not use IFS (Installable File System) supported sockets.

So, if the GDSys folder isn't present, then you don't have cause for alarm.
