Tom, I think you're right. I went back and looked at the Malware thread and HJT log indicates SP2, so ... ems88, there is no need to create a new CD slipstreamed with SP3, unless you want to, if your computer is still at SP2 and not SP3. Id it is at SP3 then download SP3 and use it instead of SP2. Shouldn't be any difference, just substitute SP3 where ever you see SP2.

Does the CD have a \I386 directory (Folder) on it? Must have it's "almost" an XP Install CD.

My XP Pro CD has the following root structure (taken via a dir h: from a Command Prompt):

dir h:
Volume in drive H is WXPVOL_EN
Volume Serial Number is 175F-E775

Directory of H:\

08/23/2001 04:00 PM 110 AUTORUN.INF
12/03/2004 05:26 PM <DIR> CMPNENTS
12/03/2004 04:17 PM <DIR> DOCS
12/03/2004 04:15 PM <DIR> I386
07/17/2004 06:54 PM 34,301 README.HTM
08/03/2004 08:56 PM 1,314,816 SETUP.EXE
07/17/2004 07:32 AM 85,792 SETUPXP.HTM
12/03/2004 04:17 PM <DIR> SUPPORT
12/03/2004 04:17 PM <DIR> VALUEADD
08/23/2001 04:00 PM 10 WIN51
08/23/2001 04:00 PM 10 WIN51IP
08/03/2004 10:07 PM 2 WIN51IP.SP2
7 File(s) 1,435,041 bytes
5 Dir(s) 0 bytes free

If yours has a \I386 folder then you can copy it to C: as C:\I386 (if there is not one already there). Then copy the following red text to a notepad window and save it to your DeskTop as "RunSFCfromHD.reg" (including the double quotes so .txt is not appended to the name.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup]

"SourcePath"="C:\\"
"ServicePackSourcePath"="C:\\"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]

"SourcePath"="C:\\"

As you can see, you DO NOT include \I386 in the reg file.

Do you have ERUNT installed? This is a long thread and I don't remember and I'm getting lazy :blush: If yes then you should have a full backup of your registry. If not, please install it following these directions before applying the above registry change: http://forums.whatth...UNT_t99376.html

Once you have a good registry backup, right click on RunSFCfromHD.reg on your Desktop and select Merge. Click Yes to apply it.

Reboot, then try sfc /scannow from Start / Run again. This time when it needs a file, it should take it from the C:\I386 folder on the hard drive and not require a CD at all.

A/R is working again! :woot: I hadn't done what you suggested yet but when I open A/R it's still blank but if I wait a minute or so the message "please wait while the list is populated" and the programs come up. This is without the help of task manager.
