Just one note on the link provided. I believe this tries to take you direct to Microsoft updates, rather than Windows updates and might require an extra installation of the Microsoft update components. My preference is to only use update.microsoft.com and not to install "Microsoft updates," which give you the ability to download updates for other things like Microsoft Office, etc. Microsoft updates have always caused a large performance hit on computers, and it used to have serious flaws that ate up 100% of the CPU for extended periods of time. For best performance, use only windows updates, and download updates for other products, such as Microsoft office, seperately. The check for windows updates takes only a few seconds. The check for Microsoft updates can take several minutes and will load your computer down periodically while it does it.

Hey appeloddity... my computer is working fine now? I just restarted it 3 times and everything is booting up just fine. I'm wondering, Last time it was working properly I tried to use the Recovery Console to restore my computer settings to a earlier period when it was working. Well when I did that, it wouldn't load my desktop. But after running that Memory ISO deal and it loaded today, it said it restored my computer settings to that date I tried earlier. I wonder if it was something I loaded on my PC after that, maybe Firefox? That's the only other program I think I had on there that wasn't suggested. I am currently using iExplorer but am a big fan of Firefox. What are your thoughts? Should I continue with the format? or should I test this setting to make sure it works like it should?

Well, if it were me, I would still do the reformat. However, I'm very sure that I could easily get the system back up and running. :) It really depends on how you feel about it and if you are confident to redo the installation successfully. It sounds like you have the knowledge necessary to do so, so I would encourage it. After having these types of problems on a brand new installation I would not feel comfortable that the machine would not present further trouble down the road. I would personally reinstall and then go from there so that after I got done spending hours loading all my favorite software I wouldn't run into more problems again. Nothing about running the memory diagnostic would "repair" any problems you had. The only thing that might fix a problem was the system restore that you tried. If it works and you want to try then go for it. :) Its up to you really. You could look at it this way, reformatting and reinstalling is just one more opportunity to learn more about this process and be better at it the next time you do it. :) Edit: Ofcourse, wouldn't you rather throw away Windows before throwing away Firefox? :)

While the computer is working. Maybe you can click start -> run -> type 'eventvwr.msc' and press ENTER. See if there are any RED errors listed in the system or application logs over the past couple days. Maybe there is a clue to your issues in there.

Reformat complete, all drivers accounted for, and everything is running just fine. Yay :D I have one question though. How do I get the Windows Updates the way that you mentioned? You said not to download Microsoft updates, but I can't seem to find a way around that to get the updates I need.

CKO7,

The link I gave you yesterday was from my Start > Windows Update link and had worked for me for years. Here is an explanation of it from Wikipedia

I googled Windows Updates after Appleoddity pointed out the difference and here are the results.

I have never had an issue updating from the link I gave you in my last post to you.

kind regards,

I found a link from your search and it directed me to the same place as your previous link but it didn't have me download the Microsoft Updates. I have everything installed and up to date on my PC now. And everything seems to be working perfectly. Thank you all for helping me through this crazy ordeal. I think we can point the problem to the drivers/instructions given to me from Dell Tech.. Appleoddity gave me a few different drivers then they did and I had no problem with them. Thanks again!! I don't know if you want to give me a few days, but it looks like this topic is now Resolved.

Hi CK07,

So pleased you have your system running well now.

Please consider browsing this link Step #3 (from the last link in my signature) to enable you to choose when you update and more importantly what you allow to be installed on your system. Never allow hardware installations suggested from Windows Updates link, always go to your Manufacturers website to install new hardware if need be.

You have done very well with following advice here, please post back any time you need more assistance with any issue you my encounter.

kind regards,

Another quick question. How do I update AVG? When I go to the Update tab in the program it wont auto update at all (Says there is an error when connecting to the server), and I can't find the updates on the website. And how do I scan a file BEFORE I download it? With Malwarebytes and AVG?

I can't help you with AVG as I dumped it months ago for the very reason you are having trouble with it.

I do not know of any way to scan a file before downloading but to be sure you only choose well respected software and follow the Preventing Malware - Safe Computing guide in my signature already suggested to you.

Re scanning your new download of any program (I always download to my desktop) right click on the downloaded file and scroll to whatever Anti-Malware or Anti-Spyware program that is listed.

Others may come by to assist you with AVG, but for me I would not recommend it.

kind regards,

I assume that other programs udates ok?

Try right-clicking the AVG icon in tray down by the clock. Select update now.

If no go, try go to start, choose RUN, then type; avgupd.exe
press enter.

If still no go, I suspect your Firewall is blocking the service. What firewall do you
use?

Yes all my other programs update just fine. It says avgupd.exe cannot be found. I'm using Zone Alarm and I allowed AVG when it asked if I wanted to block it.

Sounds like you need to do a clean install of AVG 8.

Download AVG removal tool to desktop.

Download latest AVG 8 version to desktop.

Restart computer into safe mode.
Run the removal tool.
Restart once again into safe mode
Install new AVG.

I uninstalled AVG through Safe Mode but it wouldn't let me install it in safe mode. So I installed it in normal mode and the update is working now. Thanks!
