Hi Malc, It's good to see you are still around...you had me worried for a moment! As you have completed all the preparatory work then its time to move to the first step on the repair procedure ! (Its probably a good idea to print out this information and tick off each step as you complete it) 1 Right click on My Computer 2 Click Properties 3 Click hardware 4 Click Device Manager you will see a very informative window open, this has details of some of the important stuff on your machine that could be either causing or contributing to the blue screen problem. Scroll down the list of stuff carefully.....if you want to see more info you can "expand" an entry by clicking on the + sign at the left of the entry...... What we are looking for Malc is any entry that has a Yellow or Red marker against it (usually a yellow exclamation mark or a red cross, so keep your eyes peeled for them.... (The Yellow or Red marker indicates that something is wrong with that particular entry, and this can provide us with a good indication of what needs to be done in the next step)....so check out each entry and don't forget to click on the + sign as well and post back here with the entries that have a yellow or red marker....... Its a bit tedious for you having to copy down each line that has a yellow or red marker against it and include them in your next post to us, but hopefully there may only be one or two entries that have the markers ....here again there may be no markers at all, but even so I need to know what, if any you have found. If you see any of these markers then when you type in your next post here in this thread in this forum just put a Y (for yellow) or a R (for Red) at the end of each entry you type, so I know which is what! Post back with the info and we will take it from there. Regards paws

Hi paws, I feel quite excited that at last we are starting on a problem finding program. However would you believe that no red or yellow marker showed up? I expanded on every entry but nothing showed up. I went over it twice. I hope that this is a positive in a negative position. Regards Malc.

Hi Malc, That is good news, so we can move on to the next step. 1 Click on Start 2 Click on Run a box will open type into the box the following, exactly as it appears below, in particular note the space between the k and the /...it's essential! chkdsk /r 3 A black window will open, asking (among other things) if you want the command to execute on restart 4 hit the Y key once and then close down your machine in the usual way. 5 Wait 30 seconds with a completely blank and black screen then restart your computer. 6 the chkdsk command will now run (allow it to if you are asked) and it will check many aspects of your drive, making in all 5 passes and take an hour or more to complete!.......The command will automatically fix errors that it finds and we may need to run it several times (with a restart in between until it does the whole thing without finding any errors...all file system errors having been identified and cured (or flashing up a message that it can't repair.) 7 Let us know how you get on Regards paws

Hi paws, I seem to have hit a problem! When I hit the Y key (No. 4) a box opened with the message; Windows cannot end this program. It may need more time to complete an operation. To return to Windows and check the status of the program click Cancel. If you chose to end the program immediately you will lose any unsaved data. To end the program now, click End Now. The message that appears in the top of the Black Box is as follows; The type of the file system is NTFS. Cannot lock the current drive. Regards Malc.

Hi Malc, Ok, when you get the message, after you have agreed to have chkdsk run after the restart then on the black screen please type the folowing: exit and then, hit the enter/return key once. Now close down your machine in the normal way, wait 30 secs with a blank black screen and then restart your computer chkdsk then should do its stuff, Let us know how you get on. Regards paws

Hi paws, Managed to run chkdsk twice, showing five task and then three tasks. However the explanation at the end did not stop on the screen long enough for me to be able to read anything. There was no flashing messages or any thing else that suggested that there was any thing wrong.

Hi paws, The following are two separate messages that have appeared on my screen. 1. STOP COOOO221 Unknown Hard Error \SystemRoot\ System 32\ntd 77.d77 2. Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWS \ SYSTEM 32 \ CONFIG \ SYSTEM. You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select "r"at the first screen to start repair. I have not responded to the above,as I wanted to run it pass you first. Regards Malc.

Hi Malc,
I understand,
I want you to run the chkdsk /r
command at least another twice after it has successfully completed 5 full passes.

(This may help to prevent us from having to reinstall Windows)
I also want you to borrow a Microsoft Windows XP Pro Sp2 installation disc from a chum or colleague, for the next step
What this is needed for is to help run some Microsoft utilities....nothing illegal or underhand is contemplated, so you can put the lender's mind at rest on that score.
Regards
paws

Hi Malc, Well done on capturing the information,

As you can see you have some bad errors on your hard drive and chkdsk seems to be making a good job of identifying the bad areas and then marking them as not being suitable for use and transferring info to good parts of your hard drive..

There should not be these sorts of bad errors on a relatively new machine and therefore before too long it may be necessary to replace the hard drive with a new one.........however we will cross that bridge when we come to it! (as this will mean doing battle again with Dell

In the meantime Malc, although its boring...do a normal shutdown and a restart and run the chkdsk /r again........what we are looking for is a complete set of the 5 passes that does not find any errors at all...( that would mean that chkdsk has fixed them) you may need to keep doing this, a number of times until it shows no errors! Then do it twice more just as a double check......if you get a clean bill of health from chkdsk then we can move on to the next step......however there is no point in moving on until chkdsk reports no errors.

I thought you said in your earlier post that you have the Manufacturers restore disc.....?

What I was asking you to borrow is a Microsoft Windows XP ProSP 2 install Disc (Not a Dell one)
Let us know how you are getting on with chkdsk and if you have managed to borrow the Microsoft XP Pro SP2 installation disc.
Regards
paws

Hi Malc, That is also excellent news well done. When you have got the two clear runs of chkdsk under you belt then we can move on to the next stage. This will be as follows...(but please dont start this until you have got 2 clear runs with chkdsk with no errors shown) 1 Click on Start 2 Click on Run 3 in the white box type the following (exactly as written below ( the space between the c and the / is essential) sfc /scannow This will run the Windows Protected System File scanner......it will take about 15 or 20 minutes or so and will scan all your protected Windows system files and check to see if any are damaged, missing or in the wrong place. If it finds trouble it will attempt to fix it automatically by looking for clean and undamaged system files elsewhere on your computer and putting the good copies in the right place. Sometimes when SFC finds damaged files, and it can't find clean and undamaged ones elsewhere on your computer it will ask you to insert the Microsoft Windows XP Pro SP2 install disc.......and will then copy over and clean and undamaged files from the disc and put them where they need to be. ( that's why I asked you to have the disc handy) You won't get an output log from SFC but if you watch it and it asks for your disc then you know its found trouble and is fixing it for you. When its done, close down your machine in the normal way wait 30 seconds with a black blank screen and restart your computer. When it had finished booting up and you have the familiar Windows desktop with all your Icons in the notification area then wait a further 2 minutes and then run sfc /scannow again as you did before. What we are looking for here Malc is for it to run all the way through and not ask you for the disc (meaning it has fixed the problems.) But remember Malc please don't run the sfc /scannow until you have satisfactorily 2 consecutive complete full clean runs of the previous job with chkdsk /r Let us know how you get on and good luck Regards paws

Hi paws, I am having problems when trying to run sfc /scannow. The following messages came up; Windows File Protection Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache. Insert your Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 cd now. Possible reason for this problem; You have inserted the wrong cd.(ie., a different Windows product cd than the version installed). The cd-Rom drive in your system is not functioning. I seem to remember a friend who looked at my PC said that he had put in a later version. Does this mean that I will have to reinstall with the CD that I have?
