Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255

This does not sound right.
But have you concidered that your NIC may have failed?
This does happen.
You can get a handy USB NIC for around $35.00 for testing.

The purple text in my post are links for you to click on
Computer CPUs are designed so that the address of any piece of data in virtual memory is tracked by a single integer register. So the total amount of data the computer can keep in its working field depends on the width of these registers. A 32 bit register size enables 232 addresses (4 GB) to be referenced. Switching to a 64 bit register increases the available address space to (approximately) 16 TB. This is why 32 bit operating systems can only use up to 4 GB of RAM, and 64 bit operating systems can use much more. (I have a 32 bit system)

Hi, Thanks HFCG The situation in the Uk is a bit odd compared with the USA....... The subnet mask doesn't look correct as you rightly say........but whilst using the Speedtouch 330, it is the numbers I would expect...... I just doubled checked my test rig which is mimicing Brian's and my numbers are identical....... ( and I'm using that test machine now, for this post!) I said we are a bit odd over here.... I am hoping that the router may provide a good way forward....otherwise its down to hardware checking at some stage...... Regards and many thanks for your interest Regards paws

Paws,

I got the Netgear modem router yesterday and installed it when I got home from work (it was, as you said, fairly straightforward with clear instructions on how to set it up).
Great news - I was able to immediately connect to the Internet!!!
I'm delighted to be able to get on the web again - I can't thank you enough for your patience, assistance and advice.
Is there anything else I need to do to verify that everything is fine?

One little minor niggle...
When I boot up now, I'm getting an error message that makes no sense to me. I just OK it and it doesn't appear to cause any problems. Not sure if this means anything to you, but a little window appears with the heading :
SmartBride Alerts: BTHelpNotifier.exe - Entry Point Not Found

The error message in the box says :
The procedure entry point GetProcessImageFileNameW could not be located in the dynamic link library PSAPI.DLL

Hi Brian,
That is good news well done!
It's a fairly rare sight to see computer technicians doing the "Happy Dance"............. but that's what I'm doing now!

I think you will find the Netgear to be a good piece of kit,,,just 2 thoughts on this:

1 It's a good idea to change the default password (on the Netgear log in screen) this will help keep the bad guys away! (but don't forget it!)

2 The Netgear is probably (I don't know how they come configured for Belfast) sending out a wireless signal that can be received by anyone close-ish to its location......the way to stop the bad guys or the merely curious from using your wireless signal is to encrypt it.......don't bother with WEP, go straight for WPA and choose a "password" that looks something similar to:
nTh!10798xK&...........obviously don't use that one..........but something similar will slow the bad guys down a bit! (don't forget it)

3 The error message that you have been getting has generated a lot of work in the past for me.........
BT and Microsoft issued conflicting versions of PSAPI.dll................. the conflicting file is in the update to IE7 so it probably happened immediately after you updated...........
Here's what you can do to fix it:

4 Start> Search
5 Find all instances PSAPI.DLL on your machine.
6 Rename all extra copies of PSAPI.DLL files found EXCEPT the one located in \Windows\System32\ folder to some other names like ZPSAPI.DLL (never delete or do anything with the PSAPI.DLL file in your Windows or Windows/System 32 folder).
7 Close down, and wait 30 seconds with a blank black screen then restart your machine....................
8 If there is any justice in the world then the error message on:

SmartBride Alerts: BTHelpNotifier.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point GetProcessImageFileNameW could not be located in the dynamic link library PSAPI.DLL

will trouble you no more.
Let us know how you get on.
Regards

I fairly danced around the house last night when I got connected, paws - and woke up my wife who was having an after-dinner snooze! You guys are truly amazing - I could hug you (in a manly way, of course). I'll do what you advise with regard to the password - I've no experience of using wireless so I wasn't sure what to do when it asked me about WPA etc. And I'll try what you said to get rid of the error message - now that I think of it, you're quite right, it appeared just after I did the IE7 upgrade. I was about to say that I'll get back to you on Monday, forgetting that now I can post from home again! Just curious...was the connection problem with the modem unrelated to the virus infections etc. that I picked up earlier? Brian

Hi Brian, It's always difficult to know the precise cause.... However, when I'm fixing machines I always look very hard at what was happening just before the problem started......its not 100% effective by any means as a "diagnostic tool", but it does provide a shortlist of the likely "suspects". Let me know how the fix goes for the PSAPI.dll problem. Regards paws

Worked fine, paws - problem solved! :) Thank you one final time for giving me so much of your time and effort over the last couple of weeks. Between Ken and yourself, my system is clean and operational again. Brian
