I have come to the conclusion the whole hardware has been uninstalled by drivermax. There is no reference to NVidia anywhere now. It is no longer in the hardware list & the NVidia home page is missing from the properties of the monitor.

My install wizard is telling me it's the Video Controller (VGA Compatible) that needs reinstalling.

Obviously I need to reinstall all the hardware. Is that the graphics card or what??

I went to NVidia website but I'm not quite sure since they are not the OEM. They give a list of computer manufacturers but Toshiba is not on it. It must be under one of the other names but how do I discover that?

.......a bit later on.......

I found this in the driver installation support section :-

quote "NVIDIA uses Macrovision's Installshield software to setup and install the necessary drivers on a users system. If you are running 3rd party services in the background which monitor your computer usage, it may prevent an installation from completing resulting in errors. To eliminate the startup problem, two registry entries need to be cleared from the Windows Registry"

http://nvidia.custhe.....llation error

It goes on to list the registry changes that are needed before a 3rd party installation will take effect. I wonder if that is what happened & drivermax saw it as a failure?

Perhaps I should use the Installshield to install the new components. Although it doesn't help me with discovering just what components need reinstalling.

This file nv4_disp.dll is part of this driver Driver Version: 6.14.0010.7300 (English) so the answer to your question is get the driver itself and it will install the newer version of the LL file with it.

rshaffer61 it seems the drivermax uninstalled the graphics card itself! I have spent serveral hours on the NVidia website reading the Q&A in the forums section. I decided to follow their recommendations regarding reinstallation. But the driver installation software said it could not find the graphics card. Actually it called it something else but I have closed that window now & I can't remember the actual wording but that's what it meant. So now I am at a loss. Nvidia doesn't offer direct support because the hardware & software was in a computer that I purchased as a complete package from a 3rd party. Which means I have to go to Toshiba. Perhaps someone from the hardware section of this forum can provide the right contact details for support from Toshiba. I have to do something because the default Windows monitor is not designed for widescreen & in it's current configuration it is almost unusable. I'm just thinking on the run here. I might have a solution if the graphics card can't be reinstalled. My son is an IT specialist (who doesn't like helping his mum too much!) but he set me up to do an image of the computer every so often. The latest one is from 6-8wks ago so it will have the malware in it. (My reason for coming to this help site was to clean the malware off so I could do another image this week!) Using the image is an absolute last resort because it is such a big deal & I doubt I could do it alone. My son has a very intricate knowledge of the gentoo image software used to create the image so he would have to do it I think & that won't happen until later next year when he comes over here.

Not a problem so the system is a Toshiba and what make and model is that? This way I can go directly to Toshiba and get the original driver for you.

That didn't work either rshaffer61. The message that came up was 'error, unable to complete task'. The message that came up after I tried to install the same driver via the nVidia website was 'cannot complete installation because no destation found'. So I guess that means whatever we are trying to install that driver into has been uninstalled. The hardware installation wizard opens each time the PC restarts & it says it wants to install the "video controller(VGA compatible).

OK Drivermax won't uninstall a driver but simply update it with a newer version basically over writing the existing driver. Something else has gone wrong and I would like to take this back to the basics before we go any further. First off open Device Manager and right click on the VGA controller it is showing. . Second Delete the controller since I'm sure it has a yellow exclamation mark to the left of it. Reboot the system and let the system try to load the driver itself. If a error message comes up please post that error message exactly what it says and wait for my reply as I may be able to walk you through this.

The 3 alternatives are search new driver; delete; uninstall. Device manager asks me if I want to completely uninstall the whole thing. Then warns me about doing that. :(

Sorry rshaffer61 my bad..... the 3 alternatives were :- update driver; disable; uninstall.

Nothing about delete. Is there another way to bring up the delete command or does disable or uninstall mean the same thing as delete ?

SUCCESS!!! well that's done............took quite a few attempts & in the end I had to go back to nVidia where I got a message to go to Toshiba. Thankfully I keep a years worth of browsing history & found a note about going to T this time last year. I was able to find the driver page straight off & it remembered my PC details & I was good to go! What a relief to have a monitor that actually works! Thankyou rshaffer61 for helping me through that one. :notworthy: I guess I should bite the bullet & update the remaining drivers but what will happen if one fails to load like has just happened with the monitor & something really important stops working? Should I go back to the Toshiba site & use those drivers if they are more up to date than what I already have onboard? There is quite a list on the page for my PC.

If Toshiba has the drivers you need it would be better to get them from Toshiba. Congrats on finally getting the monitor issued resolved. :yeah:  I know that was a long stressful process and I apologize for that. Just a word to the wise when you download the drivers and verify they are the correct ones....i would suggest you then copy them all to a cd, flash drive or to a external hard drive. This way in case something happens later you will have all the verified working drivers right there to pull from. :weee:

OK I've got a bit of time to spend on this PC again & am wanting to fix a specific thing that *may* speed it up a bit.

When I play any sort of video either from an internal location or via the web, it plays or feeds a few seconds then pauses momentarily. It's almost imperceptible & occurs every 2secs.

If I first update the drivers to try to fix this problem, which ones would drive that software?

Here is are 2 links to of all the drivers on my PC. I say 2 links because between them they list what I hope is all of them.

http://www.mytoshiba.../download?os=22

http://www.drivermax...;iduser=2581148

The DriverMax still says the nVidia is out of date but it has been updated & working fine now. Well I assume the video problem is not related to the nVidia since installing the new driver didn't fix that problem.

cheers
