Hi apleoddity, Thanks for all your help , its very much appreciated. I havnt got round to doing the hp thing yet but will do asap . I did a search as you suggested but it came up zero! If as you say , it is on the windows xp pro install disc i can get it from there! My disc is sp2 and i up dated to sp3. Of windows update will that make a difference to taking the msconfig from a sp 2 disc? Or is it just a baseband windows thing that is irrelevant to any sp??

Yes, MSCONFIG is independent from Service Pack. You could even copy the file from another XP machine.

Hi Phil. Thanks for the positive feedback. As Doug stated, msconfig is pretty much universal on XP, and even works on Windows 2000 which did not come with it.

If you have the XP pro disc you can use this command to get the file off the disc. Click start -> run -> type cmd and press ENTER.

With the XP disc in the cd-rom do this. Replace the drive letter with the letter of your CD drive. For instance, if your CD-rom drive is E: the command looks like this:

expand e:\i386\msconfig.ex_ c:\windows\system32\msconfig.exe

If it is D: then,

expand d:\i386\msconfig.ex_ c:\windows\system32\msconfig.exe
