Hi cld,

It looks like the file we placed on your computer is ok as windows did get past that point. NTF.sys looks like it is in the proper locations so it may be corrupted.

We may find we are going to hit this time and time again as it's possible there are more corrupted files. This may end up being a format and reinstall or at the very least a repair install. Do you have a backup plan in place?

Since you have a copy in the dllcache let's try using it and see if we have better luck.

On the ill computer,

Navigate to this folder C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache
  • In the right hand panel locate this file ntfs.sys
  • Right click it and select copy

Next, in the left hand panel, navigate to this folder C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers
  • In the left hand panel locate this file ntfs.sys
  • Right click it and select rename
  • On the keyboard, type ntfs.old
  • Hit enter and accept any warning you may be given

In the left hand panel right click on the drivers folder and select paste.

Please confirm the presence of both ntfs.old and ntfs.sys are present in the left hand panel. Please note ntfs.sys may be located at the bottom of the list.

Close the window and try to boot to normal windows.

hi oldman960 unfortunately i am getting the same message. i did check to make sure that both of the ntfs files were there too. on that screen where it said it was either corrupt or missing it also said that i could try to repair it by pressing "r" at the 1st screen. i figured what the heck lets see what happens. so i did press the r and PC Recovery Angel popped up (which is something that i thought would only happen when i inserted the cd of the same name) anyhow, it didnt get much further than that screen before it just started the "rebooting" again, which btw is the very problem that led me here in the 1st place (constantly rebooting)

Hi cld,

This doesn't look good. Coupled with the difficuly you had trying to run OTLPE, you may be dealing with a corrupt registry or failing hard drive.

PC Recovery Angel is a program used by E-machine and others. It controls a hidden recovery partition. I believe it also does a destructive restore. Perhaps someone who is familar with it can comment on whether or not you may be stuck in the middle of a restore.

We can troubleshoot OTLPE and see if there is a problem with either the iso or if it lies on your effected computer.

These scans are harmless and won't make any changes to your computer.

I'll need you to run these on your working computer.

First

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield
  • Do not copy the word CODE , please note the script starts with the :
    :filefind
    OTLPE.iso
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Next

See if you can run OTLPE on your working computer. After booting with the disk

On the desktop, please locate OTLPE
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start. Change the following settings
    • Change Standard Registry to All
    • Open your usb device and locate the file you saved there (look.txt)
    • In the window under Custom Scans/Fixes copy and paste the contents of look.txt
  • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
No need to post the log, just let us know if it ran successfully. By letting it run to completion we will know the program is not at fault.

hi oldman960 every step that you outlined came up EXCEPT load remote registry, it had went straight to "users" after the black command window appeared for like a second. you had said to copy and paste from the file that i had saved to my USB, so i wasnt really sure if you had forgotten to instruct to save the file to my USB in your latest instructions or if you meant the one that had already been saved there from a while ago so i did both. each one did work. the only other problem i had aside from the remote registry option not coming up was shutting down, the pc froze up and i had to push and hold the power button. OH..i just noticed that the time on the pc is 2 hours ahead (it says 3:49 and its 1:49) heres the log you asked for: SystemLook v1.0 by jpshortstuff (11.01.10) Log created at 12:43 on 30/05/2010 by chris (Administrator - Elevation successful) ========== filefind ========== Searching for "OTLPE.iso" C:\Documents and Settings\chris\Desktop\OTLPE.iso --a--- 294408192 bytes [16:43 24/05/2010] [16:43 24/05/2010] B307578105C6124EBB9D943A48F06A52 -=End Of File=-

Sorry I should have been clearer. I wanted you to run OTLPE without any Custon Scan. I just wanted to see if it would produce a log.

If you ran it with a Custom Scan (that was the text from the notepad) would you mind running it again without the Custom Scan?

Hi cld, OTLPE not asking for the remote registry is common if it can find the windows installation and the required files are loaded. Given that OTLPE did complete a scan on the good computer would confirm that the program is working correctly and the problem lies on the computer itself. As mentioned earlier could be file corruption, registry corruption or a failing harddrive. At this time your best bet would be to backup your data and do either a Repair install or a complete format and reinstall. A Repair install would leave your data intact but it should still be backuped just in case. This is just my opinion, the others that have participated in this thread may have a different one.

Yes,as oldman960 says faced with this situation a repair install is the way to go, followed by a format and reinstall if the repair is unsuccessful..... Once your data back up has been checked and found to be up to date, accurate, reproducible and kept safe on removable media, it might be worth downloading the hard drive manufacturer's checking utility (if you do not already have it handy) and running it from CD...this should provide a good clue to the health of the drive...... if it should be failing (and its possible) its best to find this out now before going to too much trouble. hi paws,

i was wondering woud this be useful in my case?

http://www.paragon-s...s/download.html

also you said:

Once your data back up has been checked and found to be up to date, accurate, reproducible

how can i check if it is reproducible? btw i was going to use mozy as oldman960 (or Ztruker?) had advised because it has unlimited space available i have to much to back up and only 25-30g of usb space.

how would i know which hard drive manufacturer's checking utility to use? i dont know who the maker is, but my computer is an e machine

thank you

Hi,
1 Yes disc imaging software is a good "insurance"..there are paid for versions like
Ghost, Paragon, Acronis, etc or free versions see here:
http://www.thefreeco...pandimage.shtml
2 to check if your files are reproducible just click on them ..do they open.... choose a Word .doc a photo .jpg and a few others etc
3 If you can get the Reatogo to work properly you can use that to copy any important stuff that may be missing from your last backup.
4 If you cant get it to open your stuff then try a Linux Live distro..Puppy is good..... post back if you need a step by step on how to do this.
5 use your search engine to find out the data sheet for your make and model, or if its quicker just open your machine and take a look at the hard drive..it will have the makers name on it..(Take all personal safety and ESD (antistatic) precautions when you open your machine.
6 An external USB drive is a fine thing to have and quite inexpensive... but if cash is an issue then you can get a USB caddy for a pound or two or a dollar or three and stick an old hard drive in it for extra back up..... if you ask your friendly neighbourhood computer technician if he has any hard drives going spare he will probably be happy to give you some!
Post back if you have any questions
regards

3 If you can get the Reatogo to work properly you can use that to copy any important stuff that may be missing from your last backup.

Reatgo should be working properly as the computer will boot to the Reatgo desktop. The problem is that OTLPE can not find the windows install due to an undetermined (as yet) problem with the computer.

You should be able to use the "My Computer" on the desktop to navigate to your personal data and transfer it to a USB device.

@cld Post back when you have copied everything off that you need to, and tried the hard drive utility tests( report the results please) and one of us will walk you through the next steps. @oldma960 thanks... that's good to hear, hopefully it will enable any important stuff that's not on the current back up to be copied off and........ save a trip into Linux land!
