Open taskmanager and select File > New Task
type in: desk.cpl
Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop.
Select Restore Defaults
If that didn't work
Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop.
then click the web tab, then under the web pages to display on your desktop
if it has "security" you uncheck this and delete

It was suppose to show the Desktop Properties.desk.cpl didn't seem to produce any results. Sounds like trying to get into Control Panel? It didn't come up. I tried out of New Task and cmd window both. Nuttin'.
If I've read this topic correctly, this all started after you installed Carbonite.
Did you already try system restore from taskmanager?
Open taskmanager > at the top left, click File> New Task> copy paste this in or type it in:
c:\windows\system32\restore
double click on: rstrui.exe
run it and see if you can find a date it worked right.

You can download the startersetup.zip file and extract the startersetup.exe file to C:\.
Then, run a new task: C:\startersetup.exe

Appleoddity:
That worked. I didn't proceed because it wants me to shut down everything else. Seem to be in the middle of an ongoing discussion here, so guess I do that later.
Lol.. It is "suggested" that you shut down everything else during the installation process of just about anything.
Go ahead and ignore that, do not shut down or change anything else at the moment other than to install that software and get the services list I requested.

net stop eventsystem
net stop netman
net stop shellhwdetection
net stop stisvc
explorer.exe
See if explorer opens...
Then, after performing these commands, please generate and post a new starter HTML file.
EDIT: Please also issue the command: sc config carboniteservice start= disabled and try rebooting if your system still isn't working right.
Copy and paste would be best.. THere is a space after the = in the above command.

Had to tend the puppies. Gotta do some more of that sort of thing, so my attention will be spotty for, I dunno, 45 min. If everybody has to knock off for the night in that time, hope to see y'all tomorrow.
Went through the sequences above, still no desktop. Or are we trying for Windows Explorer?
Oh --- awhile back I was wondering if a practical, if dissatisfying fix, would be to install another HD w/Os, use this one as slave?
Is this starter list before or after you rebooted?
You have services permanently hung..
Lets do this..
Issue the following commands and reboot:
sc config eventsystem start= disabled
sc config netman start= disabled
sc config shellhwdetection start= disabled
sc config stisvc start= disabled
I just fed the baby, and its time for me to hit the sack.. I'll follow up in the morning. Hopefully, with good news.

A resonable solution..
I don't know about you, but I enjoy this kind of troubleshooting. It just takes a long time on a forum.

Good for late night baby entertainment.
