awww thanx for the kind words. defrag went well and since I found the trojan with avg I ran spybot and it found a malware bot and 2 spyware bots then deleted them. I did a restart and got a file could not be referenced error but still everything booted super fast and so far all is running great. I have read several of the "how I got infected in the first place" tutorials but still don't see where my problem is in picking up these stupid issues. I love learning all this stuff, just wish it wasn't on my puter  I am going to of course rescan everthing first thing in the morning and go back over your suggestions and make sure I covered everything. thanx for being here. blessings and goodnite, Terri

Good Morning Terri,

Only five, well your day will not be too bad now will it! Posted Image

Please go to start> settings> control panel> Windows Firewall and tell us which of the three options is enabled.

Before attempting to install Zone Alarm go to My Computer >open> click on C:\Drive > Program files > find Zone Labs folder if it is there and delete it along with all its contents.

Terri, I cannot see one reason why you could not download and install Zone Alarm. However I do not have one idea why you were unable to install it before. Do a fresh download from the link I gave you and see how you go.

Looking through your TechExpress link you gave us there are many things I could suggest you may like to do that would customise your machine for you. When you are free of the 5 and feel you would like me to do this for you, just say and we can certainly get more out of your machine by cutting down on several installations that are double dipping and of no use in my opinion.

In the meantime go through your Add and Remove and uninstall anything you have not used for some time as old and unused software is vunerable to attack and is only taking up HD space. Use one of your Cleanup utilties and reboot.

Your Java is out of date and there are several old installations in your Add and Remove that should be uninstalled. Go to the following link for uninstalling Java Runtime and then to this link for downloading and installing the latest which is JR 6.0.04

When this is done, post a new pit test for us to follow to do more customising if you would like to go ahead.

Have a joyful day with your Grandchildren..............

kind regards,

I found it.... to answer one of your questions about zone alarm, I was able to download and install it. but something caused the blue screen 2x and the blue screen said to uninstall any new software or hardware I had just installed...so I uninstalled zone alarm. there is no folder for zone labs and the windows firewall is on.

Terri,

So am I now to understand that you have installed Zone Alarm fully and it is working to your satisfaction........today?

No matter that there is no Zone Labs folder in Program Files, it was only an added security query on my part to know there was not so when you install Zone Alarm you will start from afresh.

Once you install Zone Alarm you will find your Windows Firewall is Off, which is normal practice for Windows to do this.

Regarding Java, do I understand correctly you are fine with your new installation? In other words you found the correct Java to download and install.

kind regards,

I have 2 of the grands over for the night so the puter maintenance is going slow...it's ok I love it. thanx again for all your help

I am happy your work on all three computers is progressing with no stress for you.

My Space - I really think it depends on your child and how Parents advise them. There is a link that will give several opinions for you, but in the end, it is again your choice as to whether you allow them to proceed.

kind regards,

things are going along great with the computers so far. question...on my daughters computer (my 11 yr old granddaughter has an account which I just made limited. (daughter had her as admin) I want to totally block her from browsing all but certain sites. I know I would probably have to use IE for that, which is fine, can you give a tutorial on how to block ALL but some sites? oh and when I asked about myspace ( I know how dangerous it is...all the kids are closely monitored!) I meant is the site known for causing malware on computers? thanx, rainy icky day here today....this is my sunshine lol

Good Morning Terri,

I have not heard anything about My Space being Malware dangerous, it would be the links that the user clicks on within My Space that I would be suspicious of.

Here are a couple of links below and an overall view on restricting internet access for you to peruse.....

http://internet-filt...tenreviews.com/

http://www.cyberpatrol.com/

Here is an overview from Wikipedia about the laws therein.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children'..._Protection_Act

And here is a tutorial that may help you regarding your query for understanding internet filtering re childrens access.

Have a good day, it is sunny here and about 23C
