Congratulations - your computer now appears to be clear of malware.

There is a bit of tidying up to do. Please delete the following tools and reports, as they are no longer needed:

• FixWareout and its logfile (C:\fixwareout\report.txt)
• SmifraudFix and its report (C:\rapport.txt)
• VundoFix and its report (C:\vundofix.txt)
• Killbox

We also need to delete a file installed by SmitfraudFix. Click on Start then My Computer. Find and delete the following file, shown highlighted in red.

• C:\WINDOWS\system32\process.exe <-- File only

ATF Cleaner and AVG Anti-Spyware are both useful programs and I advise you to keep them and use them regularly.

Hide System Files:

• Click Start
• Open My Computer
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
• Select the View tab
• Advanced Settings: Under Hidden files and folders, uncheck Show hidden files and folders
• Select the Hide extensions for known file types option
• Select the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) option
• Click Yes to confirm
• Click OK

This is my standard 'speech' once someone's computer is clean. Forgive me if you already do some, or all, of the following.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

• Disable and Enable System Restore - You should disable and then re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point. You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here: Windows XP System Restore Guide
  
• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to 'Prompt'
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to 'Disable'
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to 'Disable'
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to 'Prompt'
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to 'Prompt'
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to 'Prompt'
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the OK button to exit the Internet Properties page.
• Use an Anti-Virus Software - It is very important that you have an anti-virus program running on your computer. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a list of some online and stand-alone anti-virus programs:

• Update your Anti-Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your anti-virus software at least once a week (even more if you can). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
• Use a Firewall - I cannot stress how important it is that you use a firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a firewall in its default configuration can greatly lower your risk. For an article on firewalls, and a list of some available ones, see this link:

• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Update regularly. This will ensure you always have the latest security updates installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  
• If they are not already present, I would recommend that you download and install some, or all, of the following programs (all free):
  • Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
    This will provide real-time spyware and hijacker protection on your computer, alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software.   • Ad-Aware SE Personal - Install and download Ad-Aware SE Personal. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti-virus software in conjunction with Spybot.   • SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and websites into your Internet Explorer and/or Firefox browser settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. • Update all of these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected will reduce dramatically.

Hi. The Wareout infection has come back, so let's get tough with it!

First I need to identify the files that it's using.

F-Secure's BlackLight

• Create a new folder, named Blacklight, in the root of your main drive (usually Local Disk (C:)
• Download F-Secure's BlackLight from here and save it into this folder.
• Log off from the internet and disconnect your modem cable.
• Go to Start= >Run, copy and paste the following into the text box and hit OK: "C:\Blacklight\blbeta.exe" /expert
• The F-Secure Blacklight Beta window should open.
  • Accept the agreement and click OK.
  • Click the Scan button to begin.
  • Important: Leave the PC idle while the scan takes place.
  • When it has completed, click the Close button.
• A text file, fsbl-date/time, will be saved in the Blacklight folder, copy and paste this into your next post.

The Blacklight scan was clean, which is not what I was expecting.

It's been over a week since the last HijackThis log so I would like to see a new one, please. We can address the McAfee problem once we see what is currently going on in the computer. I would also like you to run another tool to try to find hidden files.

Rootkit Revealer

• Create a new folder, named RKR, in the root of your main drive (usually Local Disk (C:\)
• Download Rootkit Revealer from here
• Unzip (extract) RootkitRevealer.zip to the new folder
• Go to Start=>Run, enter C:\RKR\RootkitRevealer.exe, the click OK
• Close all other windows and click on the Scan button
• Important: Leave the computer idle while the scan runs.
• When the Scan is finished, click on File=>Save... to save the text file to the C:\RKR\ folder

Please post the Rootkit Revealer report (C:\RKR\ folder) and a new HijackThis log as a reply to this thread.

Thanks for the logs. Please do not reboot your computer until I post back. If you have already rebooted, please let me know and post a new HijackThis log. The reason for this is that I need to get rid of a file before fixing some items and the file changes its name when you reboot.

We need to run FixWareout again. You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install. Make sure that Run fixit is checked and then click Finish. The fix will begin - follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer. Please do so (your system may take longer than usual to load - this is normal).

Please do not reboot your computer until I post again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the FixWareout logfile (C:\fixwareout\report.txt), as a reply to this thread.
