We're here to learn.
Questions need to be asked at all levels of understanding, even the most basic.
I'll bet that alot of folks who Run TeaTimer don't know what it is or that it's even there and running.
Since there are several steps involved, I'm giving you a link to a site owned by TexRuss (one of the prominent Senior Members and Classroom Teachers)
http://www.russellte...re/teatimer.htm
The linked site/page has pictures of what you'll see when you walk through the steps.
The page talks about disabling TeaTimer in the instance of running HJT, because TeaTimer would stop any of those changes too.
Please don't get distracted by the commentary on HJT.
Just follow the steps and illustrations for disabling TeaTimer.
Keep us informed of your progress.
Best Regards

Ok, out of the list. Can you answer for me what this stuff is and if I need it.
I like my Weather Bug. But if there's a better program...
I would like to disable it from running until I use it.
Office XP speech?
QuickTime Icon?
Am I supposed to have 2 incredimails?
MS Works Calendar?
A HAH! I wondered what Byte Swarm (temporarily out of business anyway) Was.Uninstalled!
RumbleCube- I have tried and tried to get rid of that.

What is WebEx?
In the add/remove programs...Do I need both J2SE Enviroment 5.0 Update 6 and J2SE Enviroment 5.0 Update 8?

Yes your need J2SE Enviroment 5.0 Update 8, but the J2SE Enviroment 5.0 Update 6 is out of date and subject to known vulnerabilities. So you should Uninstall Update 6.
WebEx is a utility to create Web-based conferencing, sometimes "game related" sometime professional presentation, like seminars. There are dozens of such programs available for free. (SKYPE, Yahoo conferencing, NetMeeting, etc.)
You can find out more about WebEx by entering WebEx into your Google Search box, or most other Search utilities.
I like my Weather Bug. (it is spyware) "WeatherPulse" is a spyware-free alternative. http://www.snapfiles...atherpulse.html
And many, many Web-based "portals" like abcnews.com, yahoo.com, excite.com, etc. have a "weather" feature "clickable" and set-able to your local neighborhood, or any location on earth.
Office XP speech? -- (cftmon.exe) is a component of Window XP that allows for multiple and various alternative methods of input and display for language or physically impaired individuals, or for those who have difficult typing/spelling/writing, such that "voice commands" and "audible reading" is made available........ only if you purchase some third-party "speaking-computer" software, for instance "Dragon-speak". You cannon "uninstall" cftmon.exe from WinXP. You can "disable" it in MSCONFIG - StartUp.
cftmon.exe does not make your computer "speak". It just allows your computer to interact with software applications that you may buy and install that do make vocal presentations possible.
QuickTime Icon? QuickTime is a media display program like MS Media Player, but is authored by Apple and is specifically suited to watching *.mov film clips. It is a huge resource hog and unnecessary since MS Media Player and other utilities can also serve the same function.
Am I supposed to have 2 incredimails? I don't know. I don't and won't use Incredimail.
MS Works Calendar? A Microsoft application that allows the user to create various presentation of Daytimer-like schedules and calendars, that will display, can be printed, and can be configured to "pop-up" alerts on the day/time that a scheduled task/project is to be done or is due.
I gave you a list of items that "can be disabled from the StartUp Menu".
That does not mean that I think you should "throw them all away."
Rather, it means that "it is not necessary for them to be activated at Boot time." (when you first start your machine.)
And further, that running them from Boot-time consumes large quantities of System Resources that you may wish to recover and preserve for applications and functions that may have higher priority in your ordinary computer use.
The best way for you to learn about these various applications is to "google" search for them and read about what they do and how you may wish to use them, or not.
I gave you the list to assist you in noticing that you have the option of "disabling" various computer applications and functions that you may or may not use. It is up to you whether you decide to keep them running active.
You will find that "most" computer owner/users eventually decide to "disable" the items I included in that list, either because they don't use the items, or have come to recognize that the items consume excessive amounts of computer resources that they wish to recover.
The Computer that we are considering at this time has only 256mb or RAM installed.
Ordinarily, XP requires 384mb of RAM, but can operate with smaller amounts by "swapping" (essentially "time-sharing" the machine resources) This slows down performance --- greatly. And leaves only "time-shared" resources available for your application programs like Word or gaming, or internet browsing. Lag-time.
I would highly recommend, that if it is possible for you, purchase and install more RAM. For at least a total of 512mb and better still 1024mb. Search TigerDirect or PriceGrabber for excellent bargains on RAM.
Use Everest 2.20 (free) to determine exactly what type of RAM you machine requires.
Download it free here: http://majorgeeks.co...ad.php?det=4181
Recovering system resources by "disabling" unnecessary StartUp items is considered by many to be a good plan.
At the same time, I can identify with a "newer user" who might be uncertain or wish more information before "disabling" something. I can also identify with a "newer user" who might be timid about making changes without asking questions first.
I welcome your questions.
At the same time, one of the best ways to make such discoveries is to run "google" searches, read about and make decisions based on the reading, and perhaps guided by answers from forums like this one. Then just "try out" the proposed change.
Sometimes you just need to make the change, and then run your machine for a while to see how you like the affect of the change. If you like the change, keep it. If you don't like the change, reverse it.
Best Regards
