You have a very bad infection. We can not guarantee that we will be able to totally clean this PC If this were my PC, I'd reformat and start over.

This is going to be a long fix, do not reboot or shutdown unless instructed to.

Please do not use this PC for any financial transactions until we try to clean it. After we are finished, you need to change all passwords on the PC and at any banks, etc.

This worm arrives via network shares. To propagate, it uses NetBEUI functions to get available lists of user names and passwords from a system. It lists down available network shares and uses the gathered user names and passwords to access these shares and drop a copy of itself.

It also uses a list of user names and passwords apart from those that were gathered from the system. It also generates IP addresses and attempts to drop copies of itself in default shares of target systems.

This worm has backdoor capabilities. It acts as a server program controlled by an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) bot. It connects to an IRC server and then joins an IRC channel.

Once connected, this server program receives commands from the IRC bot. The bot inputs the commands in the IRC console and waits to receive information from the server. The said commands are used to control the target system and the behavior of the server program.

This worm is also capable of gathering CD keys from certain software. It also allows remote users to launch flood attacks from infected machines against a target site.

It runs on Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, and XP.

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.

After the above:

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Download this file from the link to your desktop.
http://www.mvps.org/.../DelDomains.inf

Click "Save" and save it to your desktop.

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'install'

Once it is finished your Zones should be reset.

Next:

[*]Please Download Blackmail Removal Tool from here.

[*]Save the file to a convenient location, such as your Windows desktop.

[*]Double-click Antinyxem-EN.exe to start the removal tool.

[*]The program will scan all running processes, and then you will be able to click the Scan button.

[*]Click Scan to begin the process, and then allow the tool to run.

Do not reboot:

Next:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Quicktime Mediaplayr] wnmplyr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [windowsupdate2] rvebgoqul.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System Services] connection.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Update] vpc32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [System Services] connection.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Update] vpc32.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

delete these files if listed:
wnmplyr.exe
rvebgoqul.exe
connection.exe
xpcd.exe
vpc32.exe

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED PROFILE USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Try not to use this PC until you run those fixes. The bad guys will just keep adding more.

I've just printed out your instructions, and will do it as soon as I can. I may resort to reformatting though, as you suggest it's best. But I have a few questions for you please: How do I reformat?? Will it be enough to restore old settings from a couple of months ago? Is there any way of knowing where this worm came from? Can I know when exactly it came?? If I save files to cds how do I know I won't save the worm? My other worry is if I do reformat will I get my internet connection back easily? I'm on a wifi thing so don't plug in, and I don't want to be cut off. Thanks again Diane

I couldn't find any temporary folders in the OS so nothing to delete there.
Other than that I think I did it all.

Now the computer seems to be behaving ok but I'll tell you better when I've used it a while

I await instructions and thanks once again

Diane

How's it been running?

Be sure to keep SunJava, updated

In Add/Remove programs click on these and press *remove* if listed:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 - 97.99Mb
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2 - 143.00Mb
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4 - 144.00Mb
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5- 151.00Mb
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_04 - 130.00Mb
Or any other outdated J2SE

It is important to remove older versions as these are the ones with the holes in them. You will be surprised when you go to add/remove to see all of the versions sitting there.

Download Newest >>>> http://www.java.com/...nload/index.jsp

Once installed you can test to see that it is in fact installed >>>>

Hi Ldt None of those older versions of Java appeared, so couldn't remove Installed and verified the latest version and everything is ok The computer seems to be behaving. Maybe windows open a bit more slowly and in jerks, but once open they function normally A window appears when I am closing the computer down that wasn't there before all this trouble which says finalizing CAPP (or something similar - not quite got it cos I stop it when I see it) Haven't noticed any other anomalies so far I await instructions, gratefully, Diane

lets see if this will help speed it up.

Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

Here I am again with my doubts and problems I've created a file for the regedit and exported it. I put it in my documents, but when I clicked on it it asked if I really wanted to put that info there, so I did nothing. Should I say yes? If I don't say yes, is the file ok as a back-up? Is it ok to keep it in my docus? or should I copy it to a separate cd? or save somewhere else? I've downloaded RegSeeker and am ready to use it, but daren't press the button! I told you I was useless at this! Help!!

ccApp.exe is Part of Norton AntiVirus 2003. Auto-protect and E-mail check will not function without this. The regseeker is to see if it will help spped the PC up a little. If it's running OK, then lets leave it alone.

After following these instructions, I'd say your good to go.

Good Job

use Add/Remove Programs and remove Ewido. It's only a 14 day trial version.

Log looks good :D

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?

THANK YOU LDT!! Thank you for all your help! You've done a great job and I really appreciate it - will tell Tom Coyote that when I write too! I've downloaded Spywareguard and IE SPY. I didn't realize I needed all three! Wow this gets more complicated. The only firewall I seem to have is the microsoft one which came with the laptop. Should I download the one you suggest or is this one enough and two will conflict? Thanks again for all your help and patience Diane
