Should be I have not seen many troubles with running it. ;) but that doesn't mean there won't be. You can use Diskmgr, Disk Cleanup or Cleanmgr to delete Temp Files, Temporary Internet Files, empty the Recycle Bin, and Active X Controls aka Downloaded Program Files. Go To Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Disk CleanUp. Double Click on DiskCleanup and the wizard will check your hard drive for files to delete in the above areas. When it locates all the files, it will ask you what you want to delete. Put a check mark beside: Temp Files, Temporary Internet Files, empty the Recycle Bin and click ok. Those folders will be safely emptied.

Doh! It just gets worse and worse!! I tried disk cleanup and the wizard says I need a file called qclean.msi which is on a separate disk. I searched my system CD for Windows 2000 and its not on there either. Help

Do you have the install disk? If you do you can try to repair it but I think I would back up all your data. Post another log from hijackthis

original system disk has no repair option, so crossed fingers and ran Cleanup. Seems to have worked with no problems. Ran Ad-aware scan, and once again Bitdefender notified a virus blocked and the scan stopped in C:\WINNT\msiinst.tmp. Ran Virus check and found infected file is C:\WINNT\msupd.exe, but bitdefender won't let me disinfect the file. Ran Spybot scan and systems shows clean. Latest HJT loga attached:

Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

Then post the report here.

Lets rename the malicious file by using Internet Explorer 1. In the Address box, type \WINDOWS\system32, and then press ENTER. 2. Locate and then rename the following files, if they exist: • Msupd5.exe. Rename this file Msupd5.old. • Msupd4.exe. Rename this file Msupd4.old. • Msupd.exe. Rename this file Msupd.old. • Reloadmedude.exe. Rename this file Reloadmedude.old. 4. Close Internet Explorer. 5. Restart the computer. 6. Make sure that your antivirus or anti-spyware software is updated with the latest signatures, and then perform a complete system scan.

You may need to set you computer to show hidden files. Click here for Instructions.

Reboot in safe mode.
Then click start>my computer>local disk should be C:
(then follow the path)\WINNT\system32\drivers

Locate any .sys file that has the following characteristics: then right click and check for
a. A randomly generated file name that is made up of eight lowercase letters, such as "gbqxmhia.sys," "upzvlbvv.sys," or "jsbmefvk.sys"
b. A date of January 11, 2005
c. A size of 14 KB (13,824 bytes)
d. A hidden attribute that is set A file that has its hidden attribute set displays an "HA" in the Attributes column in Windows Explorer. If you find one let me know.
e. It has no version, product name, or manufacturer information.
Type malware1.old to rename the first file, and then press ENTER. malware2.old to rename the second file and so on

Rename the following files, if they exist:in System32 folder
Msupd5.exe. Rename this file msupd5.old.
Msupd4.exe. Rename this file Msupd4.old.
Msupd.exe. Rename this file Msupd.old.
Reloadmedude.exe. Rename this file Reloadmedude.old.

Restart the computer. Your almost done.
Make sure that your antivirus or anti-spyware software is updated with the latest signatures, and then perform a complete system scan.

Followed instructions but found no suspicious .sys files present. Also did not find any msupd.exe files you listed, nor reloadmedude.exe. Restarted computer and ran full system scan in Ewido, then ran Spybot, and both were clean. Ran Ad-aware and it stalled again in msiinst.tmp. Also Bitdefender is still showing infected msupd.exe file!

Launch Notepad (start > run > “notepad”), and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Select “all files” in the “save as type” field. Save it as FindFile.bat and save it on your Desktop.

dir C:\WINNT\msupd.exe /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Locate FindFile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the text here.
