While I was exhausted this morning after working on this for about 6 hrs, I decided it was time to get a bit of sleep! Well, while doing that, the drive is still visible to the network, but none of the WD preloaded software will work. Which basically means it's useless as I can't back anything up!

Even though I can't use the drive as I intended, hopefully I have one coming that will from WD. However it doesn't diminish the effort you all put in to trying to solve the issue. I greatly appreciate it one and all. Lesson learned? Research the drive specs and lit thoroughly before purchasing said drive to be sure it will serve its purpose.

what exactly are you trying to do with the drive? if it's seen and working when connected to the router then you can easily use it to store backups from your pc, (not that this is a "real" backup because you need to air gap your backups from the running pc, an infected pc can easily infect any networked backup drive rendering those backups useless.) all it means is you need to use better software to do the job and not rely on wd's software if it won't communicate with the drive.

to be honest though never having used any wd software i'd again think this is just a setup issue because i see no reason why it shouldn't be able to read/write to the drive if everything else does when it's connected to the router and setup correctly so the pc see's and can use it to read/write data to..

tomk i think mybooklive was the old name of their nas drives and it was because of the confusion with mybook das drives they changed it to mycloud for the newer nas drives.

see if you like any of these free backup programs if you can't get wd software to work. :- http://www.techradar...commend-1137924

but just to clarify, i personally think the wd software WILL work and it's just a setup issue. so again i'd first setup the drive on the router with clean empty partitions and no wd software on it to start with AND LEAVE IT THERE ALWAYS. set it up with the routers software so you can read/write to it from both pc's.

then once that's working.

on each pc i'd install the wd software backup program, pointing it to the folder on the drive you wish to use for the backups (i suggest separate folders for each pc.), it is at this point you may have to manually point it to the drives location.

like i said though never done what you're doing but can see no logical reason why it won't work.

That would make sense Terry, and I'm sure someone had that thought, but the reality is they sold both for over three years and they were only introduced a couple years apart. The name change appears to be due to the two drives being built with different hardware architecture and utilize different software and user interface.
