I think at this point I'll stop mucking around and just restore to the recovery partition and see how that works. Part of me sort of suspected it might come to this, and it really is honestly the fastest option at this point. I am glad to hear that it isn't hardware related, that gives me more hope for the recovery process. Thanks to all of you for your patience and support in this matter, I really do appriciate it.

Have another update, a little more disturbing though. Restore took shorter than I thought it would, and has left me even worse off.

Now it appears that the wireless doesn't even work. At all. Toggling the wireless switch activates the Bluetooth, but the wireless stays dim, and won't connect. Which is odd, because while Windows 7 initialized after install, it detected the networks and seemed to be able to connect to them. Now it can't even register any wireless network at all. I'll try connecting it to the cable modem when I get a chance.

Edit: It appears I jumped the gun. I'm currently downloading Firefox on the laptop, and everything seems to be purring along peacefully. It took a few restarts, but the situation appears to have resolved itself. Thanks again to all of you.

same situation, turned out to be windows firewall on the xp system. turned it off was able to reconnect. turned it back on and it continued to work as advertised. i can only assume that it just got hung on something and needed to be reset. hope this helps others.
